Description:

Kmart sold lenses under the "Focal" brand name. This is a 35mm f2.8 in M42 mount. It is all metal, which is typical for the era, and made in Japan. It has the AUTO/M switch which means it can work with any M42 adapter. Photos show it with an adapter to ilustrate its final size.

While Kmart is on the verge of bankruptcy today, it was a a much prouder and trusted name in the 1970's. People bought SLR's and lenses there. Their private label lens was the "Focal" brand. I did not know about that until 2011 when this 35mm somehow turned up. I must have picked it up in a grab bag. I would not have bought it on purpose.
I give it an below average rating. It feels well made, and can deliver an OK picture with reasonable detail. However, contrast needs boosting.

100X crop from above.
Hopefully, this is the kind of lens that your Uncle found in his basement and he gives it to you for free. Then it becomes something fun to use. I don't think anyone should actually buy one knowingly.
After comparing it with other 35mm lenses, I have lowered the rating to a 4. Npt as nice as Takumar or Olympus OM.
