Pros: Good IQ near and far, light, good handling
Cons: Not so good wide-open, plastic barrel feels cheap

When my 100mm macro is too long I use this lens. It's not so good wide-open: slightly unsharp and reduced contrast, halos around highlights. It improves dramatically when stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8: very sharp and contrasty across the frame, no artefacts like CA or distortion. Also worth noting that it retains its sharpness when focussed further out, so it doubles as a short telephoto lens. It may be a bit too harsh in detail for portraits, but landscapes turn out fine with it. It has a pleasing rendition of the finest detail without boasting about it, can't say it otherwise. Colours are Minolta-worthy, meaning beautiful as usual.

I use a late plain MD version for which I paid a lot of money because it was like new with box and 1:1 adapter. The plastic lens barrel is a surprise, it feels a bit cheap but reduces the weight; earlier MC models can be much heavier. This is one of the few lenses that is also good in MC versions, but as these tend to be as pricey as the MD versions I'd stick with the latter because the MD versions tend to be somewhat contrastier.
