I purchased this model in silver, and have given it a name. Through my many years, I have named none of my other cameras, but I call this one, “Bling.”
The style of this camera vaguely reminds me of one of my first 35mm cameras, a forgettable Minolta something-or-other, with a rangefinder. Only, the GX1 is in miniature; sort of an Ikea version. I like to hold this camera single-handed, and have attached a wrist strap to its right end. I often use it in conjunction with a dumb strobe (Yangnuo 560), screwed to a stud at one end a short length of closet rod and connected to the camera using a cheap NPT-04 wireless set-up. Believe it or not, I get most of the shots I take with this rig, and I am getting good at guessing the right exposure settings.
The pictures I get from this camera are probably not up to professional standards, but, considering that I use the pancake zoom lens, I think they are pretty darned good. I shoot everything I do in raw and post-process in Photoshop CS6. I do my serious work using a GH3 with an adapted Olympus 4/3 12-60 lens, but I imagine that if I strapped that honking-big lens to the GX1, it would get me within a skosh of the same result.
This is the point-n-shoot camera I carry around in my backpack. Although its size is diminutive, I never have problems pressing its buttons inadvertently, as I experienced continually when using the accursed GH2. I am caused to wonder why Panasonic engineers were not able to apply the ergonomic excellence of the GX1 to their flagship GH2 model.
Recently, this model went on sale for almost half its original price (that is when I snapped up my copy). And now there are rumors of a GX2 replacement for the GX1, to be announced this fall. The rumors whisper of a monitor that tilts (nice, but not essential) and in-body IS, which I find an unlikely marketing move. I don’t think I will be upgrading my GX1 any time soon. For now, this is my favorite camera.
