My sentimental favourite lens is my Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 40mm f/1.9 lens from my 1953 Robot Star IIa.

My Olympus Pen E-P1 allows me to play with this lens again so I decided to give it a treat and take it to the seaside. Oh well, the weather was a tad gloomy but my little Schneider didn't complain. I had a 38mm to 52mm stepping ring made so I could use my Cokin filters on the lens. No one makes 38mm filters any more.

The spot is South Flagstaff Point, Wollongong about 1 hour south of Sydney

It was a 8 second exposure at ISO 100. The aperture was either f/8 or f/11 - probably f/8. The shot was taken at 6:46am which was between 'first light' and sunrise but there wasn't a sunrise as such due to the cloud.

Peter, great title! I'm thinking you might have there's a book in the making with that E-P1 of yours, its friends and their adventures.

The soft colors are truly beautiful here and the way you've framed the rocks...that one reminds me of a submarine, just emerging, and its really cool that you were able to catch that ship out in the distance on the horizon line...with the glowering cloud bank filled with rain above. This is uuite a subtle stunner. Bravo!

P.S. Would you mind telling me which tripod you use?

Manfrotto 190XDB with a 391RC2 head. This is the cheapest of the 190 series and is very stable/robust and a reasonable weight. I was lucky to pick one up on sale for little more than half-price a couple of months ago.

A few local seascapers are using variations of the 190 but it is susceptable to getting a white powdery corrosion on the alloy leg fittings.

If I won the lottery, I would probably buy the Gitzo Ocean Traveller which is stainless steel. The only problem is that I refuse to pay more for my tripod than my camera & lens combined. Of course to honour that rule, I would have to buy a Leica! Just dreaming.

My little Schneider has had another trip to the sea, this time to Bronte Beach which is just a couple of kilometres south of Sydney's famous Bondi Beach. Bronte is a lot less crowded. Like the South Flagstaff Point shots, again a very bleak dawn but I think the end result is very nice indeed ...
