My favorite train photos
lost and all alone this loco finished its days at the yards of the Broken Hill Railway Station. Broken Hill is a mining town famous for the establishment of the giant mining company "Broken Hill Proprietry" or simply known in Australia as "BHP". Ore is still mined here although BHP doesn't have any operations open now.
This is the business end of an ore train carrying lead ore from Broken Hill to the smelter and port facilities at Port Augusta, South Australia.
Broken Hill a very important rail centre of early Australia. These old locos now spend there days educating the tourists.
Further south on the coast of South Australia there operates a tourist railway. This rail car operates the tourist line between Victor Harbour and Goolwa. A diesel powered train then continues through to Strathalbyn.
Peterborough (South Australia) was once an important rail head. Today only ore trains from Broken Hill and Indian-Pacific passenger train pass by. Peterborough has a fine rail museum. This tiny rail was used to service the gangs who worked on the railways, and camped beside the lines at night.
First class no doubt. Another exhibit from Peterborough Rail Museum.

Mainline Steam in south Devon (UK)
The south Devon mainline is famous for some steep inclines. These are some recent steam workings on the mainline.
Battle of Britain class Tangmere double heads with Britannia class Oliver Cromwell west of South Brent having climbed Rattery Bank, most of the seven miles at a steady 1 in 51. The gradient is beginning to ease
Castle class Earl of Mount Edgecumbe entering South Brent with most of Rattery Bank conquered.
Earl of Mount Edgecumbe nears the top of Hemerdon Bank, east of Plymouth, a steady 2.5 miles of 1 in 42. With nine carriages on just about on the limit for being unassisted.
All above Panasonic G1 with 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom
Oliver Cromwell running off the bottom of the west side of Dainton Bank, the regulator is opened ready to tackle Rattery Bank. I would estimate the speed to be about 60mph.

Here's part of a sequence I took last month. Out on my morning trail run when the train came by - I could have reached out and touched it. All shot on iPhone 4.

Lydham Manor
Lydham Manor running on the Paignton to Kingswear railway, in the first shot about two minutes out of Kingswear, in the second returning tender first since there's no turntable or triangular junction to facilitate turning the engine.
