Reall uninspired HDR
Single shot of a dark hallway.
Same Hallway but HDR +2,+1,0
Same Hallway with HDR +2,+1,0 with frame stacking 9, 4 and 1 frame respectively.
The HDRX image (frame stacked HDR) has ~ 10% less noise in the moderately darker areas than the HDR image and ~20% less noise than the single shot image. There is a very big improvement in going from single shot to HDR and not so great in going to HDRX. The benefits for even more extreme brackets will be more than this example which is pretty mild HDR.
If you pull down the images and adjust the white level to be ~38 counts the differences between the three images are visually obvious.
No processing applied besides simple HDR or HDRX. E-P1 ISO 200 NR off Noise Filter Off Nikon 28mm F2.8 Shutter times 1/2 sec, 1 sec and 2 sec.

Some of you may have seen these shots as I've shared them in other threads.
These 3 images are from Kings Canyon National Park. They all represent my first attempt at HDR. I like the technique, and I try to keep the resulting images true to reality. I believe all of these are from 3 exposures, auto bracketed +/- 1 stop.
In hindsight, I wish I would have exposed for the sky a bit better for this first one:

Luminance HDR
I found this freeware.
"Normal HDR"
HDRX (frame stacking) exact same settings
I did the frame stacking first by averaging the images together then used the frame stacked noise reduced images for the Luminance HDR process.

Wow, this one is spectacular! I have to admit, I don't like the heavy HDR look; I prefer images like . . . this!

Too subtle for the effort?
A little more realistic effort. A cropped (200x zoom) version from out the back door. White level radically adjusted to bring up the fairly dark tree bark. Look closely at the level of detail visible in the HDRX version compared to the HDR version. Noise obscured spatial details as well as tonal variations. When looking for the widest tonal range and the highest spatial resolution HDRX might be worth the effort.
I used EasyHDR with the same settings for both images. I collected a set +4,+3,+2,+1,0 EV with sets of 25, 16, 9 ,4 and 1 frame for each respectively.

Interesting foliage outcome. I thought it would be more dramatic but seeing a full image vs. a crop would good to compare.
I'm gonna see if I can find some time tomorrow and setup an architecture shot as well as a park setting (hopefully a calm no wind day to get motionless pics) and low light alleyway then try out some stacking software. For this shoot, I"m going to just work with JPEG images understanding that for best results, it would be best to shoot RAW and process all images with the same set of parameteres.

I was always eyeing a Sigma DP2s but with too many short comings to be my only body. Finally treated myself to proper camera. An Olympus EP-2 with a kit lens. 20mm/1.7 soon to be had, and the addition of a legacy zoom. May still get a used DP2s for landscape photography.. just something about that Fovean look. If anyone has a PS action replicate it, please let me know.

Here's my first serious HDR effort, shot using a PEN E-PL1 with Pentacon 135mm lens on a tripod and constructed from -2/3, +2/3 and neutral exposures. I did come close to mimic this result with curves and tonemapping on the neutral exposure, but the HDR version offered a more dramatic view of the rain curtains in the background.
