I've never used either lens, but just from looking at the numbers and what they do, I'm not sure it's that simple. The 100-300 is bulkier, it's heavier, it doesn't cover the traditional portrait range, and it costs more than twice as much. I'm sure it has superior optical performance in the range where they overlap, which would make it the better lens for people who are dedicated to specific types of photography that require massive reach (to which this thread's bird photos attest), but for less specialized photographers who shoot in a wide variety of situations, I think those are some steep prices to pay just for a slight sharpness bump. I know I'd gladly give up the 200-300 range in exchange for 45-100 coverage, some extra space in my camera bag, and $300 which could be put toward a different lens or maybe a few bottles of fine Scotch.
Thanked by Luke and Alanroseman.

I've had the lens about 2 months now and have barely used it. Certainly not enough to make a valued judgement about its performance although I've seen enough to know that it's better than my 45-200 lens.

Tomorrow is a SuperMoon when the moon comes closest to the Earth.
As the sky was clear tonight I thought I'd use my 100-300 lens on it.
This is straight from the camera and handheld at the lens's weakest setting 300mm. I'm happy as it's a difficult test.

Cropped and sharpened

See what you can do tomorrow night

Default Some shots with a borrowed 100-300mm Panasonic lens

I was loaned one of these today by a friend and so I tried it out this afternoon in the lane that runs past my cottage.
I was well impressed, seemed to get focus on the subject a reasonable percentage of the time, there was some hunting at times but I was working at or about the close focus limit.
The auto focus seems to be accurate, which is just as well because I was not able to obtain manual focus when hand held, that remains to be tested when I tripod mount the beast.

Speckled Wood butterfly, Panasonic G1 , zoomed to 300mm, f/8, 1/250 sec, iso 200

There is minimal post processing in Bibble Pro 5, the shots are not cropped.

You can turn the IS off on the 100-300 or the Oly camera. Use one or the other. Or neither. But you should not use both.

I haven't used the lens much but with the sun shining I took a stroll along a nearby canal. This time I dragged out my old G1.

Without question it's the quality I'd been looking for when I bought the 45-200 ; now if the G3 can improve the noise at ISOs 400 or 800 and speed up the focusing I think I'll have a useful bit of kit for the next AirShow

I like this lens. It's going to have a long life in my kit bag
Thanked by John M Flores, KVG and Kameleo.
