Default Impressionistic Rendering with a 600mm cat

I bought a Sigma 600mm F8 catadioptric (mirror) lens off the 'Bay--very good condition. Hoped the 35mm equivalent 1200mm FOV would be great for bird and aviation photography. Never owned one when I shot exclusively on film, and have seen several sharp photos taken with them in the past, so was surprised by how soft the overall rendering has been. For many photos I take, that's not great. Sometimes, it seems to work to give a more impressionistic feel.

Thanked by ricseet, sLorenzi, relic and 3 others.

Looks like light wasn't great in this shot, what's your shutter speed? Mirror lenses are sharp if not damaged, just lower in contrast and harder to focus.
