Catchy title right?


Here is my experiment with an OM 28mm 3.5 mounted with a reversing mount onto my G5. Not the most easy thing to do...working distance was short. Maybe 5-6 inches IIRC. Painfully moving the tripod back and forth with as minute movements as I could with a 3x magnified view on the lcd ("better or worse?" as they say when you get your eyes checked..).

Amazing how shallow the DoF is, even at F16.

Very nice photos and a difficult, but precision system.

I know how frustrating it can be to achieve focus with a combination such as you used. I have TWO macro focusing rails that I have used in the past. I emphasize two because I have found that they can be used together in two different configurations. With them joined at right angles, I have both distance and lateral control. With them joined in one line, I can mount the camera/lens far enough forward on the top rail to get close to the subject and use the bottom rail for actual focusing. Some day, I hope to get a third rail, along with an angle bracket, to incorporate vertical adjustment. I should mention that I use Novoflex Mini Castel Focusing Rails. These are left over from my Leica days and have sturdy, precision components with no extraneous projections to interfere with adjustments. They were quite expensive and still are, but adequate substitutes can be purchased at moderate cost.

That sounds quite a bit more pleasant than my setup, which consists of a tabletop tripod (ultrapod II) set up on top of a cookie tin to slide on my counter to try and hit the right focus! Maybe in the future!

I've tried this a few times and it is quite difficult, your results are truly amazing.

Try handheld and with flash as I do with reversing lens :)

Flash would be useful for shorter exposure time, but I don't think I can hand-hold with enough precision given the extremely small tolerance in the DoF..do you have examples or a guide to your setup?
