Nothing in the m4/3 ecosystem is going to be small enough - It sounds like she really does want a P&S. Some ideas for compacts with decent IQ:

Panasonic LX5 (or wait for LX7)
Sony RX100
Olympus XZ1
Canon s95 or s100
Pentax Q (if you can snag one on sale)
or, spend the money to upgrade her iPhone and install Snapseed =D
Thanked by crsnydertx and applemint.

The E-PM1 body (or even the E-PL3) is small enough, but once you slap a lens on, it's another story...

From early reviews, look like Sony has a winner in the new RX100, or you can wait for the new Panasonic LX7 or Olympus XZ2.

Samsung just announced a new EX2F with fast aperture of f/1.4-2.7 and zoom range of 24-80mm (135 equiv.). I have doubts about image quality of Samsung P&S though...

Nope. Get her an iPhone 4S, the camera is a huge improvement over the 3.

No. My ipod touch (similar size to iphone) easily fits in a shirt pocket - no way a m43 camera with a lens would fit in that same pocket. Even my tiny Ixus point and shoot is thicker than an iphone and it looks tiny next to my m43 camera! Even something like Olympus XZ1
might be too big, something like a Canon S95/S100 is probably the best option if size is the priority while still giving fairly decent IQ.

2 phones with pretty good built-in cameras:
- HTC One X (or XL)
- Nokia 808 PureView

Then I could build a system for kids/indoors/etc (i.e. short distance) and a DLSR for long wildlife sort of things.
Fuji X10 meets her requirements perfectly. Look over this thread and I guarantee you will want it for her:

Official Fuji X10 thread - Talk Photography

It is small, light, has a nice zoom range (28-112mm equivalent), the lens is fast at f/2-f/2.8, 2/3" sensor which is larger than most compacts, 12mp, the high ISO performance is on par with any m4/3rd 12mp sensors, and it produces great results in most situations, even in in auto mode.

Best part.... $600 is the normal price, but you can get it Used - Like New on Amazon for under $450.

Just saw this. The X10 may be a little larger than she is asking for, but if she actually saw the IQ and ease of use she might accept the slightly larger size.
