It's a limited edition. My wife bought me this bottle as a Christmas stocking stuffer and I've been finishing it very slowly. It is a blend, like all the the JW's, aged in oak casks and quite similar to the regular Black, but a bit smokier, richer and more intense. It's quite nice but the bottle and box did not indicate if it's a 6-year old, 12-year old, 15-year old or a combination

Djarum... it took me a lifetime before I came to appreciate whiskey. Most of my life the taste just didn't appeal to me. (Tequilla has been my life-time favorite hard liquor.) I didn't care for the taste of whiskey until a just few years ago. A couple of years before that a friend gave me a bottle of Crown Royal. It sat in the cupboard for a few years, untouched. Then for some strange reason a couple of years ago.... I decided to open it and take a taste. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it. That experience opened a floodgate of me sampling a bunch of different whiskeys - scotches, bourbons, ryes, Tennessees, Canadians... which helped me find the ones I now, today, really love.

Funny thing is, now I don't enjoy the taste of Crown Royal (or other Canadian blends) at all. But CR was my "gateway" whiskey, leading me to the ones I do enjoy.

As a major fan of Johnny Walker Black and Blue label, I'm sure I would love the double black... I'll try to find some.

My wife gave me a bottle of Blue label for my last birthday... I would not normally spend that much for a bottle of whiskey... not even near that much. But I must say, I really loved the Blue label... I nursed it and stretched it out for a couple of months.... very characteristic Johnny Walker blend with the islay peat smoke laying in there, but a bit more intense... not as rounded as Black label. Blue is blended to recreate the taste that JW originally developed way back in the beginning when singles were all there was and JW decided to blend singles to come up with a nicer, more refined scotch... it's not as round as Black, but a bit richer, a bit more flavorful... really magnificent! As I recall, Blue doesn't indicate any number of years aging either... it's just a damned GREAT blend which makes you unconcerned with how many years it was aged. Definintely a special treat... at the price.

As for Black... I recall reading somewhere that it is a blend of something like a couple dozen different singles. Whatever the formula.... I think they struck gold with Black.

Yuengling Porter.

And also a touch of Evan Williams "1793 Small Batch" bourbon (served neat). Not the best bourbon in the cupboard at the moment (that would be the Four Roses Single Barrel) but i've been on a mission recently tasting some bargain bourbons. For $12, the Evan Williams is pretty darned good.

This forum is filled with drunks! If we all lived in the same city we could have an epic meet, with photographic proof.
Thanked by DHart, hanzo, Luke and 1 others.

I guess that faux sophisticate is moi ... LOL ... It does remind me of a story. It was a typical hot summer afternoon in Napa, I was attending a fund raising party at Domaine Chandon ( a maker of sparkling wines). Attending the event was Robert Mondavi, a very famous California vintner. Mondavi was so well respected that throughout the afternoon he was always surrounded by a swarm of "wine groupies". At one point Mondavi grabbed a glass or red wine from a passing tray then proceeded to top off the glass with a handful of ICE. Time suddenly seemed to have stood-still as the entire swarm froze and silently stared at Mondavi's glass. Mondavi looked up from his glass and gazed at the shocked faces of the swarm and simply said "... this is how I like my wine on a hot day."

Since that time I decided to enjoy my food and drink per my palate and not to judge others by how they enjoy their foods and drinks.

In summer, I dump ice in my wine. ... I like it that way.

Gary

Great story, Gary. Funny too... the other night (VERY warm, in Badlands, South Dakota) I dropped some ice in a glass of Gewurztraminer to extra chill it and thin the sweetness just a hair... worked perfectly, but no doubt would look a bit uncouth to some... I'm also known to drink heavy red wines with some lighter fare and vice-versa.... don't care, really, it's all about what you feel like doing at the moment!

One great thing about getting older is that you care less and less about what other people think and just do what you wish to do, regardless! I'm finally at that point and loving it!
Thanked by PENpal.

Default Freshly ground coffee . . .

But later today I'll relax with a Buffalo Trace bourbon over ice.
