Default A new boring sport

Maybe they should add fishing as a competition. Give medals for casting, fly tying etc. I can't think of anything that could beat it for boring unless they combined fishing and rowing.

Synchronized diving is a sport? Why not dancing -- it is nearly the same. What became of real sports like Golf, Baseball or bowling? Bowlers are real athletes. Is there another sport where a player can eat a hotdog and drink a beer while playing? :-)

This is my first post on m4/3 -- I just bought a GX1 with the kit lens. I've been trying different legacy glass and am awaiting an adapter for my Canon 55mm f1.2 . Hopefully I can make some image posts soon. So far my old Olympus Pen Ft lenses rock!. Jupiter 9 is good too.

I actually enjoy beach volleyball, and not just for the bikinis. Regular volleyball as well. Not so much the men's side, as there are fewer rallies. (OK, maybe it is the bikinis)

One thing I really don't like is NBC's coverage. I think they missed the memo where we have become a "see it now; see it live" society. Tape delays do not work in this age of instant access to everything. I understand that they need to sell lots of commercials to cover their cost for the Olympics, but they really need to come up with a better model. It's not the 1980s anymore...

OK, maybe this isn't fair but the most boring things I've seen on American TV coverage of the Olympics:

1) Medal ceremonies;
2) Fluffy 'up close and personal' vignettes of athletes;
3) Bob Costas droning on when instead of actually watching a real, like, sport

As far as the sports . . . I enjoy (nearly) all of them. Olympic soccer is actually more interesting than pro soccer often is, probably due to the exuberance of youth. Ping pong is a far cry from the game I played in my basement--WOW! Water polo is brutal, just plain brutal. Beach volleyball . . . well, yeah, that's silly but then any sport where they mandate skimpy attire isn't really a sport anyway.

What you mean the 'Lingerie football league' isn't a real sport? I'm shocked!

All Olympic sports should be fought to the death to add excitement!

You must be a fencer, because in my experience fencing is a sport that is all but unwatchable on television. I mean, I figure how can you really go wrong with sword fighting for crying out loud, but I just had no idea what I was watching. The rules seemed very specific as to what constitutes a "touch" and I just couldn't see whether a given attack scored a point until the judge made his determination.

To a lesser degree I sort of have the same feeling about any of the sports which have outcomes determined by judges. Although I don't mind watching gymnastics or diving, for example, I just don't know enough about either of these sports to tell a very good performance from an excellent one from a transcendent one. I mean, I can obviously spot a fall or a major miscue, but I feel a disconnect between the performance I am watching and the "results" as determined by the judges.

This idea is actually not as far-fetched as you might think. The sport of casting has been a part of all but one World Games (which are sort of a test-bed for future Olympics sports) and has been considered for inclusion in the Olympics. Apparently tournament casting has been a sport since 1860.

It appears that competitive fly tying is not quite so far along the road to acceptance, but it does exist.
