Default Help! G3 settings; what am I missing?

I tried some night shots of the moon on manual, with legacy glass... all good.

But when I tried the same sort of shots with the kit lens, no go!

I could not make the camera take pictures at all, not in mode or manual and wondered if there was a shutter release over-ride that I had missed or some other such setting that I have missed?

Andreas

"A Focus Priority setting in the Custom menu allows the Panasonic G3 to be set to require a focus lock before the shutter can be triggered, or alternatively to allow the shutter to fire regardless of whether a lock has been achieved. "

- taken from Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Compact System Camera Optics - Review

Focus priority would only work with AF on. Legacy lenses don't allow AF so focus priority will not be in effect when they are used.

Thumbs down Still no answer?

I have still had no answer to this, can anyone help?

And why on earth was this thread moved to this part of the forum?

Totally inappropriate and the original placement was in Panasonic cameras which I would have thought was the correct place!

Answer: see two posts above.

Shorter Answer:
  • There is a shutter release override setting.
  • It is called 'Focus Priority'. Look again in above post to locate it in the G3 menu.
  • If 'Focus Priority' is set, shutter will only be released when focus is aquired. Probalby due to darkness, AF could not aquire focus on the moon
  • 'Focus Priority' is probably not active with MF lenses or in manual focus mode. Manual mode of PASM does not affect MF/AF choice.

I believe Pheaukus answered your question indirectly. I think the camera is somewhat confused by the moon. When focus priority is on it won't let you take the picture until it finds focus and locks. If you turn off focus priority and make sure the camera is focused on infinity it should work.

It depends sometimes how "close" the moon is...doing spot metering usually makes auto focusing easier. The longer the focal length the easier it is for the lens to focus.

Thanks pheaukus.

The second reply was what I understand... Even after all these years, a weird explaination in English will confuse my German way of sorting the information!

And thanks for the other replies too!

The focus setting has been switched off for now...

For now, let's hope the skies clear up and the moon shows again for another attempt!

Cheers

I checked the moderator log, and from what I can tell this thread was never moved.
