I had the G3 and GF1 at the same time before, the G3 is not that much bigger compared to the GF1, except for the viewfinder hump towards the back. I guess a GX1 is a way to go!
and yeah the batteries are the same, it's a big plus.

Superb GX1
I replaced my GF1 for the GX1 at Christmas time and did consider the G3 but wanted a smaller footprint camera to carry.
I am delighted with the build & IQ of the GX1 and used it as my primary camera on a trip to India earlier this year (in place of X100), it performed in a faultless manner but due to bright sunlight, I did need to used the LVf2 that is a worthy addition and quick to fit/remove as well as being equal to the EVF on the G3.
I know there is not a big difference size wise but every little bit helps, I have also replaced my 20mm lens with the PanaLeica 25mm f1.4 and find it an amazing combination to use.
These two taken with GX1 + 25mm f1.4
The two images below were taken with GX1 + 45-175X lens

Given the fact that GX1 and G3 are using virtually the same sensor design, the G5 now stands out in a class by itself. There is obviously the price difference.
Sensor:
G3 – 16 MP (analog) Live MOS sensor
G5 – 16 MP (digital) Live MOS sensor (same as GH2)
Processor
G3 – Venus 7 HD
AVCHD 1080/60i (sensor output 30fps)
720/60p Motion JPG 720, 30fps
G5 - Venus 7 FHD
AVCHD 1080/60p/60i (sensor output 60fps)
720/60p MP4 1080, 720, 30fps
This new processor now makes use of the sensor’s full potential, so in essence it’s better than the GH2.
Viewfinder
G5 now includes the eye sensor
LCD
G3 - 3.0”460K pixel
G5 - 3.0”920K pixel
Touch Lever
G5 now offers the touch lever to control the power zoom lens.
Burst Speed
G3 – 4 FPS
G5 – 6 FPS

Note that while G3 and GX1 do use the same sensor, the software on the latter are closer to G5 (it offers the same high ISO) and the video engine was upgraded as well (with MP4 capabilities, at 30p).
As for 'Digital' vs 'Analog' it is more of a marketing gimmick for an internal component optimization, not an actual sensor change - AFAICT there's now a new chip that does nothing else than sequencing the MOS, and this chip communicates with the CPU 'digitally', so in turn the CPU can do other things faster. Which also may explain how they got 60p working, and faster sequential shooting modes. Still, it's an important optimization - and I am curious to see if videos would finally be free of rolling shutter effects.

I believe the G3 & GX1 go out to ISO 6400. The G5 goes to 12,800. The video engine (Venus) on the G5 is a new engine, newer than the GH2, GX1 and G3. Regarding digital vs analog, it's more than a marketing gimmick. Yes, it's all about getting things done faster which it appears that they've accomplished. In the previous models you had an A-D converter, whereas with the GH2 and G5 the data path is digital, so the integrated A-D converter is no longer used.

whew, I'm getting a GX1 at roughly USD400+ equivalant. Next week that is.

Well, my GX1 goes to 12800. It's not spectacular, but it's going to be the similar on G5. See samples here.
As for the A-D converter, I've found that Olympus has a nice guide over how such sensors work
- so they are still there with a 'digital' MOS (the name denotes output type, not the process) but instead of one for the whole sensor, there is one for each column, and conversion is parallelized - hard to say if this is exactly what Panasonic did, but if so you're right it's more than just an gimmick.

I have a GX1 on order, I'm going to need some work on my skills and composition, and now I'll have to stop blaming the camera.

Is this confirmed? (the sensor being the same as in the GH2)
