Thanks for the reminder. I'll wait a bit to see if the RC has any issues. In the meantime, I'm doing RAW+JPEG so I'm not losing anything.

Like the GX1 before it, it's been somewhat neglected, swept away under the tide of E-M5 mania. I think the E-M5 has been great for the m4/3 format since it has brought in a lot of curious outsiders and drawn attention to the fact that m4/3 can compete with larger formats while offering its own benefits, but it's also been bad for the other m4/3 cameras coming out around the same time as they haven't garnered nearly as much attention due to the E-M5 hogging the limelight.

Frankly, I think it's like getting 95% of the quality and functionality of the OM-D for around half the cost, a very good value camera.
Please tell us all where you can buy a G5 for $500. I'm sure many of us would love to take advantage of that deal $700 is 70% of the cost of an E-M5--hardly "around half the cost". That's not to say it's not still a great deal at its current asking price.

The IQ is just slightly behind, no IBIS and weathersealing. In turn you get a fully articulating screen, built-in HDR, and a silent electronic shutter (no vibration and great for subtle shooting).
I think you're right on that it's got most of the image quality of the E-M5 at a friendlier price. Functionality-wise it depends on what you're looking for. For me the lack of IBIS is a huge negative for any camera, while for others the lack of a fully articulating screen is a deal killer. It's great that we have all these choices now, although it would be even better if one camera had it all! No doubt the price for such a camera wouldn't be great though.

That said, you give up style..no one would say it's a sexy camera.
I don't know--I think it looks kind of nice. Maybe not "sexy" but not terrible either.

The ergonomics are great...as good as m43 camera. Just a bit better than the G1 which was my former fav.
... until the GH3 is released. That thing looks to blow all other m4/3 cameras out of the water in terms of ergonomics.

I hope the G5 catches on. I think once the GH3 comes out and everybody can see how the lineup shakes out, the G5 will start getting more attention since the GH3 will be in a much higher price bracket and people will be able to see the G5 for the bargain that it is.

I'll take the electronic shutter over ibis anyday, besides you only need ibis for slower lenses just get the 20 or 25 no problemo. Most panny lenses have image stabilisation and the electronic shutter ads another layer of image is.

I haven't used one, but my understanding is that there are limits to the electronic shutter--can't use over ISO 1600 and potential for jello effect. When they finally get a global shutter working that would be awesome.

IBIS works for all lenses including the fast ones. If I'm shooting at 1/40 ISO 3200 I might be able to shoot with IBIS at 1/10 ISO 800 instead if I'm not shooting people. 2 stops cleaner ISO is nothing to sneeze at, and that's a scenario I find myself in often even with a fast lens such as the 20mm f/1.7. I can understand that other people don't shoot the same way.

IBIS also works for video including with non-stabilized primes (i.e. all of the m4/3 primes except for the 45mm f/2.8 Macro), and particularly the flavor in the E-M5 works wonders for video.

But really I've said enough about IBIS. The topic here is the G5 and I didn't come here to point out it's shortcomings but rather to extol its virtues. If people give it a chance I think it will make a lot of shooters very happy.

Same here. I'm a Canon shooter who's first DSLR was a 550d/T2i (when it first came out). Now that I'm shooting with the xxd line, if I wanted something more portable I too would get something like the G5 which has DSLR similar enough styling and lower cost to make me not choose a Rebel over a G5.

I'll admit, the EM5 is what has really brought me to the m43 forum to learn and get opinions, and the more I learn about the mirrorless segment, the more I'm intrigued.
I was about 2 weeks from pressing the purchase button on an EM5 but now all these new options are popping up, so I keep waiting to see what's around the corner!

Phew , I'm pleased you started this thread and I'm not the only person to buy a G5 . Well not strictly true, as my decision to go for it was swayed by an initial burst of enthusiastic user reviews on this forum when it first came out. Which was also why I bought a GF1 a couple of years ago . Up until now the GF1 was my first and only interchangeable lens camera and it was this forum that I found the most useful source of helpful information while I was wondering what to buy to upgrade from point and shoot but still have a small portable kit. I love the GF1 which I have used to teach myself the basics of photography helped by a ton of knowledge absorbed from this site, I like to photograph wild British orchids which are tiny and the results I got with the GF1 were fantastic for my needs. But recently I was struggling with poor light this summer under trees , my eyesight just couldn't see the screen that near to the ground for manual focusing , so I figured the positionable screen could be a massive help in those situations . I wondered about the OMD when all the hype was happening because of the weather sealing but I was frightened by the price. Anyhow the G5 was announced and a reasonably local camera store had stock so, importantly for me, I could actually try the camera out. It was the first time I had used a camera with a viewfinder or substantial grip and it felt really great in the hand so I went for it. So far I'm really pleased with my test shots , though I'll have to wait for the spring for the orchids to come along to really compare the results to the GF1 . I wondered about IBIS and I read all the arguments on here but for my Orchid work on a tripod it's not an issue, and I don't have any non system lenses yet. I love the PL45 and that seems to work excellently with the G5.

I have a couple of questions , I have Aperture which seems to support RAW files for the GF5 but not the G5 yet ? I'm fairly new to RAW so not to worried about the wait but does anyone know how long Apple usually take to add new cameras ?

Also I am looking to invest in a new lens soon to expand my kit ( I have the PL45 for macro , the 14 - 45 kit , the 20 pancake and the 45-200 )

Has anyone tried the 14 - 140 on the G5 ? I don't really shoot video but that seems like a good range of focal lengths in one lens with silent operation?
I thought it might be a good lens for travelling if I only wanted to take one with me . But I hardly ever see it mentioned these days.

I don't post much on here , there are one or two of my GF1 orchid shots on the PL45 image thread , but I have learned a hell of a lot from this forum as a relative beginner , so thanks everyone.
Thanked by crsnydertx.

I can agree with most comments in here on the G5, it's everything I wanted the G3 to be. Like the G3 but hate its handling. In terms of IQ it's equal to my OM-D.

Here's one of my first shots with the G5 together with the 100-300 lens

Thanked by Bokeh Diem and Manu-4Vendetta.

I consider the g5 around half the price given that I personally find the omd handling to be imbalanced and almost awful without the 300$ grip. With the g5 the grip the camera comes with is all I could ask for.

You could convert your files to DNG and use the current version of Lightroom.
