I just picked up a black body on Thursday and finally found the time to play with it this morning. Here's a few of my first impressions.
I'm coming from a Canon 60D so I too struggled initially with the small size and lack of a substantial grip. The camera feels slippery to me, it's the black body and it seems a little difficult to hold. I'll probably end up getting a grip. I also have a G3 and I do find that camera easier to hold, but it's more like a toy then this substantial little guy. The magnesium body makes a huge difference. The build quality of the EM-5 is far superior. It feels like a real camera. Small, but it has a very high quality feel.
The button layout seems cramped since I have big hands but I'm getting used to it quickly.
I also found the Olympus menus baffling, as I also did even more so with the Panasonic, but I think it's just because I've been shooting Canons for so long I have a much better understanding of their menu systems. To me the Canon menus are much more intuitive.
All in all I was a bit skeptical until I started shooting with the EM-5 and downloaded the first few hundred photos shot mostly with the Panasonic 20mm. The JPEG's at the default settings are beautiful, so much so that i didn't even bother to look at the RAW files. Very impressive. Even with the slow 20mm the focus was fast and super accurate. I'm really digging the output of this camera. Contrast and color are very nice and the indoor shots at iso1600 are very clean.
So even though my initial impression of the EM-5 was mixed, it does exactly what I want it to do, which is produce great images in a MUCH smaller package. Give me a week with this thing and I think I'm really going to love it. I'm anxious to get out with the 9-16 and the 45 and see how it goes.
One major nitpick: I wish it had a fully articulated screen, the tilting screen seems like kind of a lame compromise. My favorite part of an articulated screen is being able to turn the LCD screen inward to protect it when not in use.
