You have to press your glasses against the rubber cover to see the full EVF, otherwise the corners get cut off. It does block out a lot more head-on lights but not good enough for sunlight or bright lights.

The only way to completely block out the lights is to press your eye directly against the EP-11 rubber piece. You can either wear contacts or change the diopter dial for focus, if your eyesight correction fall within its range. I use both methods depending on if it's a sunglasses or normal glasses day. It only takes a quick push to move the glasses up to free up my eye for the viewfinder. The diopter dial method doesn't work as well since one of your eyes can't see much if you shoot with both eyes open.

It is a totally different experience though when you press against the EP-11. It's an "isolation mode" where all you see is what's on the EVF and nothing else. It probably feels like being under the darkcloth those large format photographers use . The most annoying distraction for me is the reflections from the LCD and EVF that come into my peripheral vision, usually from bright-color clothed people or objects behind me. Pressing against the viewfinder fixes that.

Would it be practical to fabricate one from Sugru?

Man. I lost my E-M5's eyepiece not once, but twice!

The replacement just worked itself lose and dropped somewhere in Universal Studios Singapore. So frustrating.

How does anybody even use the standard eyecup? Coming from Canon DSLRs I expect the eyecup to provide some support. If I stick my eye right up to the standard eyecup it feels like my eyeball is touching the outer glass of the EVF. Probably my eyelashes but still--it's bothersome. I guess it would work ok for people with prominent brows and/or sunken eye sockets :) With the EP-11 I get some separation, so although it doesn't completely block out stray light like the better-sculpted Canon eyecups it at least feels better than the stock eyecup.

I got my EP-11 eyecup last week and has been using it with no problem, even with my glasses on. Just have to press my glasses tighter against the eyecup to see the whole frame. However, I ran into an issue with the EP-11 last night when I tried to slap the E-M5 external flash light onto the hotshoe. I couldn't! I found out that the EP-11 is too large that it blocked the external flash from fitting into the hotshoe and AP2 port, no matter how I tried to fit it on. The solution? I ended up having to switch back to the EP-10 in order to use the external flash that came with the camera...

Nope, the solution is to pull down the top outside rubber edge of the EP-11 down while sliding on the flash...just tried it.

If you sill can't do it, maybe your EP-11 isn't fully locked in position.

That's exactly what I did the one time I tried the external flash.

yep. Mine works just fine like that. The flash doesn't even touch the eye piece after it's seated.

Hmm, I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Be aware that if you use a sling strap, the camera hangs lens-out, so the eyecup will rub/hit against your butt. Apparently, the butt wins in this confrontation.

Gary
I have used mine with a sling strap and the lens faces backwards with the viewfinder facing (guess?) forwards, so it doesn't rub on anything and the baseplate sits nearest my body. Sling straps should be considered 'a work in progress', and need to be tuned by choosing the correct lug and the correct shoulder. Some like the OpTech strap impose only one way to carry it because of the bias on the shoulder pad, others don't, especially the original Leica inspired 'Y' strap that started the whole thing off.

Just a thought, if you are using a sling starp attached to the tripod mount, then yes, it can cause the camera to rub against the body in only one main direction, viewfinder in.

Steve
