Tom, the pushbutton user interface is arguably at least as good as the twin dials of the E-P1/2, and there are adjustments to the live view displays (auto ISO value displayed, smaller histogram overlay, live highlight/shadow clipping display, one touch zoom view) which make it an advance.

Although the shape is less elegant than the E-P1/2, it's actually probably a little more practical - the grip is more secure, and it's noticeably lighter while feeling just as sturdy.

I'm still bugged by the lack of electronic levels, but it's a really practical little camera, with the built in flexible flash and there are better controls on the video too.

Cheers

Brian

OK, I've overcome the levels issue to a good degree... by enabling the 5x4 grid overlay in live view - Olympus have improved this since the E-P1/2 by making all grids fine black lines, instead of highly visible (but intrusive) dotted white lines.

I'm much happier now, the E-PL1 is really a strong little camera.

Cheers

Brian

You won't be happy until I've done another video set, will you

For now, enable the advanced menus (spanner MENU DISPLAY->ON)

Cog Menu D DISP/SPEAKER/PC->Fn/INFO SETTING->LV-INFO->DISPLAYED GRID->(5x4 grid is first one)

Cheers

Brian

Brian, when it comes to the Histogram setting in menu D, how would you recommend setting it for both Highlight and Shadow?

I notice the histogram is much shallower in depth on the E-PL1, is that just the way it is...or is it something one can control? Another words the rectangle with the histogram is rather long and slim...as compared to the E-P2. Maybe that is because at present my Shadow settings are at zero?

P.S. For anyone who knows me via this site - yes, I am considering buying the E-PL1 for several reasons....so that's why I'm asking all these questions.

The only really noticeable thing to me between the quality of the E-PL1 and E-P2 is that is the Connector Cover is not as well made in my opinion... It reminds me a bit more of my Canon point and shoot's little door. I think I'd definitely get a card reader, rather than flip this open too often. That's just my impression.

The flash is great to have - not super powerful but it sure does make things easier if one is after some snapshots and doesn't want to deal with putting on a separate flash...and/or likes the EVF.

The size is quite nice and it does weigh less...which can be a plus. I also like the ergonomic grip, as well.

Hi BB, I'd set histogram to 255/0, and also

(play) CLOSE UP MODE->mode 2

so that you can enable the LIGHT BOX display in Live View.

Cheers

Thanks Brian!

When you say
Quote:
(play) CLOSE UP MODE->mode 2
do you mean that little arrow inside the rectangle as "play"?

Shall I continue asking my never ending questions, or stop?

Yes, that's what I mean... keep asking, but I'm off to bed for now

Cheers
