By far my favorite substitute macro is the Zuiko Digital 70-300mm f/4-5.6. I'm not sure that really counts though, as technically it is a tele-macro at 300mm when using manual focus. I don't know why Olympus never marketed it as a macro-capable lens, even though it can achieve the same 1:2 magnification ratio as the Zuiko Digital 50mm f/2 macro and many of the OM Zuiko macros.

This is without any teleconverters or extension tubes:

And this is with the Zuiko EC-14 1.4x teleconverter:

My next favorite macro substitute would be the Zuiko Digital 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 SWD. This lens takes wonderfully sharp images, and gets to a little less than 1:4 magnification ratio, which is pretty much the standard for non-macro Zuiko Digital lenses. This lens is still my go-to lens for shooting small products. If the 50-200mm can fill the frame with it, then that's the lens I'll use. Otherwise, I'll switch to a dedicated macro if the 50-200mm can't get in close enough.

Thanked by eno789.

The closest shot I have to macro is from the Minolta Rokkor 45mm pancake. Heavily cropped. I stuck it on 8x zoom in camera, and minimum focus distance to get this.

I used to make use of the Oly 14-42mm mk1 which had a surprisingly short minimum focus..been experimenting recently with a reverse mount setup for macro, using a 28mm 3.5 Olympus OM lens mounted backwards to the sensor.

A better description of the setup and a few extra shots here:

Inspired by phrenic I tried out the reversed lens thing. With some silvertape everything worked out quite easily :)
Ps. Its my first macro shot EVER :)

Using the Kenko extension tubes [10+16mm] I have used most of my lenses, to experiment with cheap/different close-ups. The longer lenses seem to do best —*this example being extreme: Leica R Elmarit 180mm f2.8, +26mm extension tubes; @ f8, 1/160s, ISO 200. Longer lenses get you a little further away from subjects, and some insects get twitchy if you get too close with, say, the LP 45mm f2.8 macro.
