I don't have the lenses to measure things but are you able to get the original cap (VFC4412) and attach/glue some sort of filter step up ring to it so that way you can use the thread from the step up ring to screw in filters?
If you use the original cap and cut off the front then you should be able to push the larger filter right up close to the lens?
Only thing I don't know is the outside diameter of the lens cap and if a step up ring will fit over it.

Yes, see how the 77mm Cokin P ring looks on the lens cap. There's a thread on DPR about someone using an 82mm filter with a step-up from the 77mm on the cap. I'm not baller enough for 82mm filters.

One question, has anyone tried using a stock Cokin P+72mm, and putting the adapter ring on the outside of the permanent hood of the lens? The inner diameter of the adapter ring should be around 69mm (according to google) and should fit if not the outer most part of the lens hood.
In case the adapter can't go through the outer most part of the hood, then I can resort using an outer slot on the holder for filter, right?

I tried what you describe with the Cokin P & 72mm ring, but the ring is too large for that, slides off. You need to have something else that the hood diameter increase by 1-2mm.
Wedged from the back, and using the outer 2 slots of the holder is how I use the original method presented in the thread.
If you do buy another lens cap with the 77mm ring it should work out quite well. Do bear in mind that in order to minimize vignetting below 9mm you'd want to turn the holder guides to be aligned horizontally - so not for landscape photos with grad filters. I think it's important when you cut it to leave a little of the front so it doesn't slide too far back - both the cap & hood are conical. I'll modify mine as soon as I get another lens cap.
