I'm a pushover. I like the way the 45/1.8 looks on my black E-p3. I've never experienced missed focus or hunting - at least, not more than any other lens. IQ and value for money is terrific.

My only caveat is that if Olympus brought out a 45 or 50 with f1.4 or f1.2 and similar construction to the 12mm or 75mm, I'd sell a kidney and buy it in a heartbeat.

I have never had an issue with the AF on my 45/1.8 (with the Oly E-P3). In fact, the two were my favourite combination of the entire system (the stuff I owned, anyway). I am selling off my entire outfit (check out my listing in the Buy, Sell & Trade Forum), but it certainly has nothing to do with any AF issues - I simply never had any, with any of my lenses!

Just curious, are you switching to another mirrorless system, or are you leaving this category all together?

I have a Fuji X100 that pretty much replaced my gear, and for everything else I use full frame DSLR cameras. As much as I liked the Olympus and the system, it was not enough for the sort of work I do, so it only saw "hobby use" lately. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but the Fuji X100 now covers that.

This is not a dig at the system, I like the system, but for me it just happened to be in "No Man's Land" - not good enough for serious use (or what I call serious use), and not small enough to take everywhere with me. Since getting the Fuji X100, I simply found myself not reaching for the Olympus most of the time, mainly because of the superior IQ of the larger sensors in my other cameras.

I wish I could keep them all, but it was time to simplify my life. If they're not getting used, they might as well go to a good home. Cameras aren't meant to sit on a shelf.
Thanked by hkpzee.

The Oly 45 is an odd duck... I got it at the same time as my P25 and no matter what I did, I just couldn't love the Oly. It was sharp & produced good images - although they were clinical looking. And I did wish it was a little longer a focal length, but it made some great portraits.

Never had any AF issues while I was using it, and haven't heard of any from the friend I sold it to. I can vouch for the Vivid mode as being an aid to the focus. It seems a little strange, but it does seem to help. And if you're shooting RAW, it doesn't have any affect on the final image.

I might be missing something, but how does this look "clinical"?

I see nice smooth transition from in-focus to out-of-focus, i.e. nice bokeh. And I have plenty of examples like this. With all that stuff in the frame, this was a bit of a challenge for the lens, and it passed the test IMO.
Thanked by twokatmew.

it's my only telephoto lens in my bag right now, so i kinda have no choice. but i like it, it delivers when it's needed. and the F/1.8 comes in handy when the situation calls for it. Yes it focus hunts at times, but not often.

The possibility for me to let go of this lens is when I get a PL25 and Oly 75. I might...

Interesting, I hadn't noticed any focus issues specific to the Oly 45, though I admittedly don't use it all the time. It is an odd focal length for a prime lens, but I generally only ever break this lens out if I'm at the dog park taking dog photos, shooting portraits (candid or posed), or at an event where the reach is appropriate.

The behavior mentioned where it seems to lose the ability to focus until you adjust the focus manually has happened to me, but I've seen it on multiple lenses and on both the G3 and GX1 bodies. I just assumed it was a result of contrast detection autofocus sometimes getting confused in challenging conditions. Usually I just point the camera at something completely different, refocus, and after that it works again. I'll have to pay more attention from now on and note if there's any pattern to what lenses, lighting conditions, etc.
