I have settled instead for one of the great Macro lenses, a mint Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5 with PK 13 extension tube.

The 55mm + PK 13 cost approx 25% that of the Panny 45mm, the working distance has not improved, but think of the money I've saved.

Hi Dave,

I have the same set up like yours when I had my D700. What do I have to do to connect the PK-13 to my EM5? Any Nikon to m43 adapter?

Honestly, you won't go wrong with most macro lenses out there. If you want a nice lens, get the Kiron 105mm f2.8 1:1 lens or the Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 (also called Bokina). I like the Nikon 55mm f2.8 micro lens as well, but the working distance is less, so I use it for flowers and such. Also, you could get a Vivitar 135mm f2.8 Close Focusing lens (made by Komine), which is quite good as well.

I use AF quite alot on my macroshots, maybe 50/50 with AF and MF, so i dont understand why people say it´s useless and big No-no.

I use AF quite a bit for what little Macro I do, but it's to a deal breaker.

To the OP: if you have the Canon 2.8, just get an adapter (EOS to MFT). You won't have aperture control, though. If you don't have a dedicated macro lens I would seriously consider picking up a legacy macro (I like long, so even a 100mm macro would be fine - longer working distance as a rule, which I feel is an advantage) with an adaptor.

Mattia, which EOS to m43 adapter you prefer with aperture control? There are so many brand names like Voiglander, Bower...

Depends on your definition of macro . I have found AF useless when I go above 0.5x magnification as it just won't focus at such high magnification. Most people confuse close-up to macro and that's why the confusion. For close-ups, AF would work really well, but for macro, it just won't.

For example, this shot with Canon 350D + Sigma 105mm:

I doubt I'd get the Sigma to focus so close with AF. And that photo is not cropped, the magnification was around 0.75x I think.
Thanked by Tosh.

AF may work but it is not nessesary in the least with macro. DOF is so small you can just focus by moving your body. If you are not using a tripod, even after you lock AF you are likely doing this anyway unless you are amazingly steady. I have had a few AF lenses with other systems in the past and almost always disengaged AF when shooting macros.

If AF works for you, that's pretty awesome. For me, it hasn't worked and I have stopped expecting it to work at high magnifications . And to me, there's something about seeing the picture come into focus out of nothing. May be I enjoy that experience more than AF doing the work for me.
Thanked by pake.
