SD card question

I bought a 32GB (primarily because it was such a good price; I don't usually use big cards) and received "iffy" answers from both Olympus and Sandisk. The card is and Ultra SDHC class 10 card, but the designation on the package shows SDSDU-032G-A11. Sandisk said if the camera (E-M5) was USH compatible, the card was OK. They also conmfirmed that my 12 in 1 reader would be able to read the card. Olympus said the camera is USH compatible so I assume the card will work OK in the E-M5.

I understand that it is hard for card manufacturers of cards and cameras to keep up to date.

I would like verification from you experts that I can use the card.

 Me after spending 3 calls to Olympus about the card and updating!

Thanks as always.

File numbering on e-m5

Does anyone know why, and if so how to stop, my e-m5 numbering in a semingly random manner. It will sequentially/normally number on a 7 digit basis (5197003) and then add a hyphen and number after that (5197003-1, 5197003-2 etc) until reverting to 5197004, 5197005 ... and then ... wait for it, at some random point down the line it will add the hyphen again.

It is driving me nuts and it is driving the knowledgable guys in my local camera shop nuts. I know it is a trivial matter BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHY:confused:

Hi, I'm new here and to micro four thirds gear. I haven't purchased a camera yet, but I've been a DSLR user for several years. I recently sold off all of my Sony gear in preparation to switching to a lighter system.

I am really interested in the OM-D - IBIS, EVF, and the style of the camera are all major points for me. I did check out the Sony NEX, but lack of IBIS, the left sided EVF on the higher end models, and the more modern design are pretty much deal-breakers for me.

I do have a question, though. I have a very clean copy of an Oreston 50 1.8 Meyer-Optik Gorlitz lens that I would love to be able to use with whatever new camera I purchase. Is there a recommended available adapter that would allow me to do so? Adapters are one area that I am very unfamiliar with, as I have never used an adapted lens. I also have an impeccably clean copy of a 28 2.8 lens that I would also like to adapt (same mount).

I look forward to participating more here, especially once I have purchased my new camera.

lense suggestions for new Panny G5

Hi all,

I was gifted with a Lumix G5 for my birthday last month and it came with the
14-42mm and 45-150mm kit lenses. I have a trip coming up in a couple of weeks that will feature sweeping vistas and a fireworks display and was looking to add a lense (or 2) to my equipment. Have been considering the panny 20mm f1.7 and the Rokinon 7.5mm fisheye. Does anyone have any thougths or suggestions? Oh, and I am on a budget.

Many thanks in advance.

Time for a landscape again. This is Buttermere (if I remember correctly) in the Lake District in England, taken in September 2010. The sun was even shining that day .

Mu-43 PP Challenge Rules
The Challenger will provide any photo that he/she deems worthy of challenging other members to "improve" by way Post Processing. It must be their own photo, and taken with m4/3 equipment. "Improve" is a subjective term, and includes many creative ideas as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenger agrees that entrants may make any changes they deem fit to post in their entry.

The winner of the previous challenge gets to post the next Challenge and serves as the judge for his/her PP challenge.

For obvious purposes, the judge is disqualified from participating in his/her own PP challenge. Instead, he/she should post a photo to start out the challenge.

Should the winner not be able to commit to being the next challenger/judge, the responsibility is passed on to the runner-up.

At the end of the 72-hours (we don't have to be strict about 72-hours, especially with time differences depending on where you are on the globe), the judge will name a winner, a first runner-up, and a second runner-up.

Entrants
The Challenger's image is posted for the sole purpose of the PP Challenge; it is not posted to invite Critique or Criticism.

Entries shall be limited to 2 per member for each Challenge.

Entrants to post a BBCode link to the Large size image of their PP edit(s), preferably 1024px x npx, or npx x 1024px, if the original image and/or the PP edit allow for these sizes. Also a click-through to the original sized hosted edit if appropriate (but not a requirement for entry). If you post your entry to a photo-hosting site such as Flickr, Photobucket, or a Gallery, etc., please credit the original photographer to make it clear it is not your photograph; something like "Photo taken by xxxxxx over at Mu-43.com" should suffice.

Entrants are strongly encouraged to post the settings and techniques used for their entry, however this is not a requirement for entry.

As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. We may not all agree with the chosen winners, but the judges decision is final without adverse comment from the Entrants; the judge is encouraged (but not required) to state what criteria he used to decide on a winner.

To make sure we don't break any Mu-43 rules/regulations, by participating in the PP Challenge you are allowing the judge to re-post your image for the sole purpose of announcing the winners in the thread.

Weekly Challenge #5: Silhouettes and sunsets

I hope this isn't too specific, but I really love seeing sunsets with silhouettes of stuff (people, trees, buildings, anything neat). Bonus for awesome cloud formations!

Here's two photos to give ya an idea of what I'm looking for.
The first was taken back in my P&S days with a Kodak Z730, but I really like it. I don't know what the phenomenon is called, but every now and again, right as the sun sets, there'll be a brilliant spike of light straight up, like a candle, for just a moment.

The second I just like for the silhouette.

Weekly Challenge Rules

The challenge will be open from Wednesday through Monday, with a winner announced on Tuesday. Everyone gets to submit 2 photos shot with an m4/3 camera in line with the chosen theme. The winner of the previous challenge gets to choose the new theme (topics can be anything under the sun) and serves as the judge for his/her weekly challenge.

For obvious purposes, the judge is disqualified from participating in his/her own weekly challenge. Instead, he/she should post up to 2 photos as examples to start out the challenge. Should the winner not be able to commit to being the next judge, the responsibility is passed on to the runner-up.

Contests are scheduled to open on Wednesday of each week. On Tuesday of the following week, the judge will name a blue ribbon winner, a runner-up, and 1 honorable mention. As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. We may not all agree with the chosen winners; the judge is encouraged (but not required) to state what criteria he used to decide on a winner.

Just bought the OMD and an accompaniment of lenses, after waiting many years to find the right digital camera that feels like my Contax G2. Luckily, I can use the 45 and 90mm Contax G lenses with a Kipon adapter.

I looked hard at the GH3, but a salesman convinced me to look harder at the OMD. Glad I made the choice, and I am loving the camera. Looking forward to shooting.

=====
_*Mu-43 PP Challenge Rules*_

At the end of the *72-hours* (we don't have to be strict about 72-hours, especially with time differences depending on where you are on the globe), the judge will name a winner, a first runner-up, and a second runner-up.

_*Entrants*_

Hi,

I'm a new member (and MFT user) from Portugal.

Previously I was a Pentax K7 shooter, but decided to move to MFT for portability, so far I'm greatly impressed with the images delivered by the E-PL5, so far I only went out with the kit lens but already received the prime trio (14/20/45) and I'm also impressed with their indoor performance.

Feel free to add me as a friend on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/barbosas/

My first shots with the kit lens.. more to follow with prime trio. Cheers

If anyone has any experience with both and would care to share, it would be appreciated.

TIA and thanks for the space!

Hi folks,

Roy here, from Los Angeles. Recent convert from Nikon. I'm loving the compact/weight savings of m43 that comes along w/ the phenomenal quality of the EM-5.

I'm a zoom person (already sold my kit lens for the Panny 12-35 which I love), as it's a little easier for me with the kids and only packing a single lens. Looking into moving into the prime world very, very soon.

Glad to be part of the m43 family!

Great to be here. Hello everyone. The truth is I'm a total noob in photography. Bought my OM-D just in March 2013...the last camera I'd own was an Olympus Mju II. It was probably decades ago. Since March, I've been totally hooked onto photography..exploring all styles from HDR to BW to Macro & the list goes on. Self-learned thanks to my mentor Mr. YouTube & the world wide web.

I've been posting in G+...feel free to pay me a visit. I'd love your critiques! :drinks:

My name is Sergio Burani and I am the founder of Photos by Sergio. I am a Travel Photographer who wants to make a difference. Capturing people and places all over the world is my passion. The economic value of my photography, including my time, is entirely devoted to charity. You can visit me at www.PhotosBySergio.com (http://www.photosbysergio.com)
I can no longer carry my traditional DSLR equipment during my travels. My back is acting up. I have recently switched to M43, with an Olympus OM-D EM-5. I have a lot to learn before I can obtain professional results and this forum appears to be critical to this process.
Thank you all!

We may not all agree with the chosen winners; the judge is encouraged (but not required) to state what criteria he used to decide on a winner.

. . . I just recently upgraded to M43 from my (still enjoyed) compact point and shoot digital cameras. A local shop had the Lumix GF3 with 14mm 2.5 kit for $199 (no tax!) and I couldn't resist.

I come from a film background (35mm/MF/4X5) but making film relevant and easy to use, manipulate and print in this age is getting challenging. I had to give up my darkroom on my last move and even having my Fujichrome Velvia processed requires shipping. I can still develop B/W film. My raison d'etre for image quality had always been the large print to add to my portfolio case or hang on a wall.

Digital really won me over when I took an image scanned from a 4X5 B/W negative and manipulated it in Photoshop. Even with my limited PS skills, I could enhance the image (and fix flaws) far better and faster than I could in the darkroom. I sent the file to Cone Editions and had them print a 20 X 24 print from it. It was expensive but life is short - and the final product was stunning. The neg had some major defects I could *never* have done that in the darkroom!

So as making those prints has become more and more difficult, I've been sharing travel pics from my compact digital cameras informally online and figuring out how to save up enough for a Nikon D800 that I can use my existing Nikkor lenses with.

Until then, M43 looks like a good option to hold me over. I really like the advanced capabilities of my new camera . . . with the RAW, auto bracketing etc., I look forward to learning the ropes.

My first question would be: Why doesn't someone make an inexpensive M43 lens wider than 14mm? My favorite lenses in the film formats would correspond to 12mm in M43. This has always been a popular field of perspective. My camera kit came with a fast 14mm lens and the kit was only $199. And the least expensive 12mm prime is like $600-800? And there are only 1 or 2 models available? It seems strange.

Hello to everyone! I found this site when I started searching for information on m43 cameras (specifically the gf1). I got one for a song and just realized that it actually does make a difference in picture quality when compared to a plain old point and shoot camera.

My whole family and my girlfriend have all been into photography for years and years, and I always cared less, but after holding the gf1 in my hands, I became interested. Its so much smaller and less intrusive then those giant dslr's. I dont really need to worry about throwing it in my bag or breaking it because its nice and smallish, and it feels like a heavier version of my old point and shoot cameras.

Anyway, I plan on using this camera to learn about light and lenses and cameras in general because as far as I know, the knowledge will always be applicable if I want to "capture a moment" for the rest of my life.

So, thanks for creating and contributing to this great site and I look forward to reading and learning. ...for the next few months at least :)

Hello!

I moved to the GH2 realm a couple of years back primarily because of the Vitaly hack for video. Coming over from Nikon (brief liaison with E-Mount Sony) and have been thoroughly enjoying the m43 format.

I certainly profess to be no expert, so I do tend to read a lot of such forums as this and soak the information in rather than get too caught up in debate.

Only recently have I been taking photos with my GH2 though, even restarted my flickr account in light of... anyways, some recent images-

these were shot with a Voightlander 17.5mm f0.95 lens

I am a victim of happenstance.....

Well, actually it wasn't happenstance that brought me here. It was booze. Seriously!

Long story short, a few weeks ago I bought a Bower 8mm fisheye that was advertised as being a Canon mount BUT it turned out to be an Oly 4/3 mount instead. Yeah, I got suckered because the seller convinced me to send the $$$ via PayPal as a "gift" and ended up leaving me hung out to dry on the lens.

Sooooo..... just last week I was drunken eBaying (come on, admit it - you have ALL done it at some point in your lives so don't judge me!!!) and I managed to win an auction for an E-PL1 w/o a lens for a smoking good price. Or at least my rum addled brain THOUGHT it was a good price. :drinks:

And now here I am, the proud owner of a :43: camera. Yippee!!!

Next step: score a lens or two and start playing w/ the new camera. I figure it'll be a good addition to the line-up in order to fill the gap between the 50D and my cameraphone.

In the meanwhile, I'll be scoping out the forum for info on :43: pancake lenses and adapters for classic manual lenses. If anyone has suggestions or pointers for a "dumb" 4/3 to :43: adapter (i.e.- an adapter w/o the electrical contacts that doesn't cost $50+ for it) then I am all ears.

So yeah..... that's my story and I am stickin' to it!

MU-4/3 Post Processing Challenge #29 (100 Hours)

Ok, sorry for the delay folks, had a crazy busy day so had to wait for tonight to go through and find a suitable RAW for this challenge. This is a file from an apple picking trip, and one I had for no particular reason just never gone and edited for a final version.

I liked some elements of the image but it's definitely one that is very flat SOOC and needs a good touch with PP to make it really come alive. For purposes of this challenge I did an edit of my own as a "baseline", and now I'm really interested to see what others come up with :2thumbs:

Here's the JPG as exported from LR 4.4 with no edits:

RAW File: http://jayloden.com/mu43/pp_challenge_29/P1010378.RW2

RAW File (zipped): http://jayloden.com/mu43/pp_challenge_29/P1010378.zip

Full size JPG (Save As): http://jayloden.com/mu43/pp_challenge_29/P1010378-large.jpg

This challenge will end Sunday (2013-05-12) night at 10pm EST, with the winners announced shortly thereafter.

=====
*Mu-43 PP Challenge Rules*

At the end of the 100-hours (we don't have to be strict about 100-hours, especially with time differences depending on where you are on the globe), the judge will name a winner, a first runner-up, and a second runner-up.

*Entrants*

Two examples (only the second one is mine):

Options for underwater housing for EPL3

I own an Oly EPL3. Given that I consider the cost of the Oly underwater housing too pricey ie. nearly double the cost of the camera itself - has anyone got any suggestions for less expensive alternatives? I'm also considering buying a decent point & shoot with dedicated housing as an alternative eg. Nikon p7100/7700 or Oly XZ-1/2. Anyone recommend P&S options? I plan to use it for shallow snorkling/swimming or in wet weather.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, I moved up from a P&S to a Pana G3 a few months back and have really enjoyed reading this forum. I had a Minolta SLR about 20 years back, but didn't really get into photography. More recently have been taking lots of pics of my 2 kids - who are mow 12 and 14 - dances, spoets, school events, vacatons. The motivator to move to a better camera was our last vacation to Vancouver and Banff, and was peetty disappointed with the photos I got.
So now have a G3 with 14-42 and 45-200 kit lenses, a Pana 20mmand a Konica Hexanon 40/1.8. Enjoying the all, particularly the legacy lens! Now plan to get a 14-140 to make life simpler while traveling.

New Mu-43 App in the works

Our current Mu-43 app is being phased out (no longer available in the Apple App Store and Google Play store).

The new Mu-43 app is now in the Google Play store. Has also been submitted to Apple for approval in the App Store. Currently the app is based on Tapatalk version 1, but we will be updating it soon to be based on Tapatalk 2.

I think overall it will be a nice improvement on the old app, especially with the Tapatalk 2 update that solves the issue with embedded Flickr images (as well as including other nice improvements).

Advice on lenses for Olympus Pen Lite

Hello from somebody who is new to micro four-thirds.

I have an Olympus Pen Lite (EPM 1), with the kit lens. A friend is clearing out his stuff and has given me three of his old lenses. He tells me that they will adapt to my camera with a Canon to Olympus 4/3 adapter. Before I buy an adapter, please could somebody confirm that these lenses will actually fit and work with my camera? I do know that they will require manual focusing.

Sigma DL Zoom 75-300 mm. 1: 4-5.6
Sigma DL Zoom 35-80 mm. 1: 4-5.6
Tamron AF 24-70 mm 1: 3.3-5.6

Thanks in advance for advice.

Hello, I am a long time Nikon FF shooter, mostly with the wonderful 24-70 and mostly shooting street style.

I have just lately switched over to the Oly OMD 5 with the Panasonic 12-35, thus replicating my Nikon setup. So far, I am happy as a clam with the results.

I need to figure out how to replace my SB800s for event work but that will come later.

My web site is lewlortonphoto.com (http://lewlortonphoto.com)and I welcome any looks at my pictures or reads of my blog on photo topics at the same site..

Hi, Ever since i had my E-m5, I noticed when i take photo of of color red, or if i have a major red color, the color red loses its detail. Is this normal? Or I have a defective EM5? or is there a setting that affects it? See the attached photo and help me figure it out.

Notice ELMO? But any other color around him is fine except him. Color red came out fine with my iPhone.

Hello all! Here is the new challenge. This was taken with my G5 and Oly45 and is absolutely one of personal favs although the quality is not 100%. That being said, I have never settled on a final processed image and thought this would interesting to see what others come up with.

This challenge will end Tuesday night at 11:59pm PST, with the winners announced on Wed evening the next day.

=====

At the end of the 100-hours (we don't have to be strict about 100-hours, especially with time differences depending on where you are on the globe), the judge will name a winner, a first runner-up, and a second runner-up.

On here, I called myself The Minimalist, because I started out with the GF1 and the Panny 20mm Lens and back then I was determind to stay with just that as I learned this great hobby of mine. Well I failed miserably, I totally underestimated the affect of GAS. I more or less have the lenses I need, I know I will upgrade my bodies in the not too distant future as technology moves on.
Though the main reason I am changing is because the Goverment in my country is bringing in a law for businesses to claim orphaned images that are circulating on the internet. Please don't ask me the full details as I am not a politician or lawyer and this may breach the TOS of this site. All I'm doing is looking after myself and my photo's the best I can. If anyone should profit from my photo's, it should be me.
I want to continue to share my photo's with the world, especially with you guys and gals on here as this is a great community and I have learnt so much from the other contributers on this forum and seen many inspiring photographs on here. You have made my hobby more enjoyable.
Thank you for your understanding, but I got to go as I've got some photo's to process and post.

THEME: *PATTERNS*

I tend to look for patterns in nature, and I'm trying to branch into other genres, such as architecture. But, certainly, patterns don't have to be repeating geometric series! Let's see your interpretations.

A couple examples:

Hi all!

Daniel from Sweden here. Have longed for a forum which is oriented about the system I use and have been reading this one for a while and thought it was nice, so here I am :) Attached a recent photo also.

Formerly a E-3 user but changed to E-M5 last year. Really satisfied with the OM-D and the small lenses! Fantastic system, this time I feel it's alright to buy into a system :) Check out my current gear on the photo, a Samyang fisheye is ordered and the 60 macro maybe this summer, then I feel I have what I need. Also a Triopo tripod, FL36R flash and some filters, bags and stuff.

My interests is besides photography also radio-controlled helicopters and listening to music. I live in an interesting "suburb" to Gothenburg, see photo. Close to the continent I feel :) and even one stop closer now when joining :43:

Hi, my name is Miguel and I'm currently living in Chesapeake, VA. I recently sold an Xbox360, PS3, and two iPhone 4 in order to purchase a Panasonic GX1X, a 45-200mm lens, a set of filters and macro lenses, and a bag to carry all of the gear in.
My last camera (which my wife now uses) was a Sony DSC-HX5V. After playing with an Olympus EPL1, I decided it was time to upgrade.

I'm new to photography and most of the time I mess with a cameras settings until it looks right. I have no knowledge of terminology or how it applies when speaking of photography. If I am trying to figure something out I normally resort to google or to forums such as this one.

I hope to gain as much knowledge as I can in the upcoming months to minimize the effort I need to put forth to take a good picture.

Aside from photography, my other hobby is riding my motorcycle. Here are a few pictures of my bike I recently took.

Hi folks, I'm glad to be here.
I'm a Dutch guy, and became interested in photography a long, long time ago. Serious Hifi/dj equipment and music (LP's) GAS kept me from ever buying a decent camera however. I've minimised the HiFi stack and sold most of my dj stuff, so now there's budget to finally experience the joys of photography.

I've just picked up a Panny G3 a couple of weeks ago, which is my first foray into 'real' photography.
I decided to go with mu-43 because it combines results with good portability.
Panasonic somehow spoke to me because of the awesome video results that firmware hacking makes possible, available lenses and the simple factor of affordability.

Tips, tricks, advice, fun, enjoyment of photos, I'm looking for all of it.

If you have advice already on the basis of the photo selection at the bottom of this post, please share.

All of these were shot with the 14mm f2.5 pancake. After I get my adapter I'll also be able to try out the 55mm 1.8 Takumar and the 55mm f2 44-2 Helios.
No idea what my ideal lens is/will be/should be and which will turm out to be the keepers.

All of these were shot raw and converted directly without any further pp.
The first pic was shot in the Dutch city 's-Hertogenbosch (aka Den Bosch).
The others were shot in Belgium, in the Ardennes (Bouillon/Les Hayons specifically) region.
