Hey guys,

Today i went to my local store to get some GAS pills (aka: lenses) and the manager who already knows me, started chatting and asked me which filters do i use with my lenses, so i told him about B+W UV filters plus Marumi CPL, Cokin P ND, etc.

And he says, well have you seen this? and pulls a fancy silver rounded box with a filter inside. (looked fancy already= expensive to my eyes) and pulls out the new Cokin Pure Harmonie UV filter.

i was like WOW!. this thing is thin!. thin as a film, thin!. i didnt know even how to grab it from its hand. To my surprise this were not expensive (compared to my B+W UV ones) and also are multicoated anti everything pure glass!. the most impressive thing is that apart from being the thinnest filter ive seen in my whole life (not exagerating) it also has a thread to take caps or other filters.

so i pulled the trigger for my new O17 that i was buying!

I thought i would mention this as i totally recommend this filters. simply impressive! :2thumbs:

Cokin - PURE Harmonie - UV MC - The contact lens of your lens. (http://www.cokin-filters.com/pure-harmonie/uv-mc/)

ps: i have nothing to do with this brand, just a "WOWed" customer.

I love the idea of wirelessly transferring files from my camera. Unfortunately, I'm too poor for the EP5! What's the best option for my EPL2?

1) Pen Pal - This has depreciated to the point of affordability. I like that it's made by Olympus so I have faith it will play nice with my camera.

2) Eye-Fi SD Cards - These are pretty cheap too, and seemed like the go-to solution for a while.

3) Cheap Knock-Off Eye-Fi's - As I mentioned, I'm super poor these days, so if these will likely suffice I'm interested.

Primarily, I just want to be able to transfer photos from my camera to my iPhone while I'm out. Geotagging seems like a plus (but not necessary). Also, I'm really just looking for a stop-gap as my EPL2 is long in the tooth, and GAS is building up...

An L-Bracket for the Olympus Grip

Does anyone know of a grip designed to fit the HLD-6 Olympus grip?

I've been studying the RRS L-bracket contribution, but it can't be used with the HLD-6 (which obviously provides more battery-supported life).I have seen a couple L-brackets that will fit somewhat, but in both cases the "L" side does not come up high enough on the side of the camera to center the camera's optical centerline over the tripod centerline.

There are probably methods to accommodate this by using an assortment of fixtures but that is just not as handy as a one-piece solution.

Anyone using Domke F-5XB ruggedwear version?

I am interested in buying one of these. I am looking at one on Amazon but the dimensions given are different to another 5-XB. I just wondered whether anyone who has one of the ruggedwear versions could kindly confirm the size for me.
The dimensions given are
Product Dimensions: 17.8 x 33 x 25.4 cm (ruggedwear version)
Domke F-5XB Shoulder and Belt RuggedWear Bag: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Domke-F-5XB-Shoulder-Belt-RuggedWear/dp/B002BH3XXQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ph_2)

another versions dimensions are
Product Dimensions: 26.7 x 11.4 x 16.5 cm
Domke F-5XB Shoulder Belt Bag - Brown: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Domke-F-5XB-Shoulder-Belt-Bag/dp/B0015IKDRQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ph_6)

It just seems a bit odd to me, maybe a mistake. I would just like to make sure before I go ahead and order one.
Thanks

Review: Polymer Works Grab Focus Lens Cover (45/1.8)

During the past week, I've been trying out the Grab Focus lens cover for the Oly 45/1.8 lens. It arrived with a professional-looking, illustrated instruction sheet that includes simple instructions for installing and removing the cover, along with a few tips for mounting and dismounting the lens with Grab Focus attached.

My first reaction upon holding the cover in my hand, was "Wow, this is really nice!" Even nicer than it looks in the detailed photos Bravin posted in his "Protect Your Lens" thread:

http://www.mu-43.com/f38/protect-your-lens-45909/#post447707

The Grab Focus is lightweight and nicely made with a strip of very low-pile, adhesive-backed faux velvet on the inside to assist with grasping the focus ring. The cover slipped easily onto my lens, and I think it looks quite nice on my silver E-PM2 with or without my black hood.

Image: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cqToXblqu_s/UZfSYyVoxhI/AAAAAAAFvcE/-G0pnqqneZ0/s800/grabfocus-1.jpg

Image: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-BisbWieHztU/UZfSZkQUBoI/AAAAAAAFvcM/9kV103rk_jQ/s800/grabfocus-2.jpg

First test, manual focusing: with just a tiny bit of pressure on the focus ring (the ribbed area of the cover), manual focus feels and works fine. On my first attempt, I used more pressure than necessary, so manual focus was a little jerky. But within a second or two, I knew just how little pressure to apply, and manual focus worked very smoothly.

Next up, mounting and dismounting the lens with Grab Focus attached. This test worried me a bit, as my naked 45/1.8 is particularly difficult to mount and dismount. And sadly, despite Bravin's excellent instructions, I've yet to master either task.

When mounting the lens (cover installed), the lens sticks about half-way (as it does when naked), at which point I stop, get a better grip on the lens/cover and try to complete the mount. Unfortunately, the cover turns while the lens does not. When dismounting the lens (cover installed), each time I feel like the lens will disengage at any moment. I do manage to move the lens just enough that the camera can't identify the aperture, etc., but the cover continues to turn without the lens.

The good news is that I've found I don't have to completely remove the cover to mount or dismount the lens. If I pull the cover forward enough that I can grasp the bare lens base, I can mount and dismount the lens with the Grab Focus on the lens. Further, I don't change lenses much, so even if I had to completely remove the Grab Focus to mount/dismount the lens, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Even though the faux velvet strip inside the Grab Focus is very low-pile, it does inevitably pick up a little dust. The velvet is so smooth that a quick wipe around the inside of the cover with my index finger easily takes care of it.

I really like the Grab Focus. I left it on my lens all week, only removing it for various tests, and I feel my 45/1.8 is well protected from dings and scrapes. My rating: I'll be keeping it on my lens! 4 stars out of 5.

Next step is to make some sort of removable attachment for holding them in the backpack.

Novoflex MiniConnect mounts ???

Has anybody ever tried the MiniConnect mounts from Novoflex?

Novoflex - MiniConnect (http://www.novoflex.com/en/products/camera-support-systems/quick-release-systems/miniconnect/)

Novoflex - MiniConnect MR (http://www.novoflex.com/en/products/camera-support-systems/quick-release-systems/miniconnect-mr/)

I am currently looking for a smaller/lighter quick release system for my m4/3 bodies. These look good but too expensive to just experiment. If you have used them or even seen them in person please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Dirty brush - how to clean?

I have managed to make my lens cleaning brush dirty somehow - whenever I try to brush a lens with it, it leaves an unfortunate film which has to be removed with a lens cleaning cloth. It must, I think, have come about either by my touching the head of the brush when removing it from my pocket or by blowing on it to try to get dust out of it. Either way, is it possible to clean it? If so, how?

Lost in all the hype around the recent introduction of the E-P5 and the E-PL6 I somehow missed the announcement (http://www.olympus-global.com/en/news/2013a/nr130510epl6e.jsp) of a new white "body jacket" for the E-PL6 (and E-PL5/E-PM2). The new jacket "covers the camera's grip and can be used to paint over or to attach stickers and other decorations." This is your blank slate to bedazzle (http://www.asseenontv.com/bedazzler/detail.php?p=296300) your camera.

In case you're not the creative type or you're just low on inspiration, Olympus has helpfully provided some great examples of what can be done with this:

While it's possible that (like the E-PL6) this new accessory will be released only in Japan, I'm sure that won't slow anyone down from getting their hands on one. I look forward to bookmarking the "Show: Decorated Body Jacket" thread that is sure to pop up soon.

Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 10 - Mini Review & Images

My MM10 just arrived, and when I saw how small it is, I immediately thought I'd have to send it back. But ... the bag is nicely made of quality materials and clearly well designed, so I decided to see what gear I could fit inside and how accessible it would be. As it turns out, I can fit a lot in this tiny bag! So ... I just cut the tags off. :2thumbs:

I moved the divider so I could just fit my E-M5 with 17/1.8 mounted sideways and my Samsung GS3 & case in the phone pocket. That leaves a narrow space for a few small accessories. Just guessing, I could probably fit the FL-300R with the kit flash in that space. The top of the case still closes easily with the lens cap from my 14/2.5 in the pocket inside the lid. Note that my E-M5 is wearing the RRS BOEM5 plate. In this orientation, there might even be room for the matching grip and L-plate.
Image: http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/data/2178/think_tank_mm10-1.jpg (http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/misc/p38198-think-tank-mirrorless-mover-10.html)

If I remove my GS3 (too tall) and insert the camera lens down, there's still room for the 45/1.8 beneath the mounted 17/1.8 ... or the camera with 40-150R mounted and bayonet hood reversed.
Image: http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/data/2178/think_tank_mm10-2.jpg (http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/misc/p38197-think-tank-mirrorless-mover-10.html)

With the 40-150R & reversed hood mounted, the 14/2.5 fits sideways in the bottom of the space to the right of the pocket, leaving more space on top.
Image: http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/data/2178/think_tank_mm10-3.jpg (http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/misc/p38196-think-tank-mirrorless-mover-10.html)

And finally, here's the case next to the E-M5 with RRS plate & 40-150R/hood mounted, along with my GS3 in its case.
Image: http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/data/2178/think_tank_mm10-4.jpg (http://www.mu-43.com/gallery/misc/p38195-think-tank-mirrorless-mover-10.html)

In addition to the main compartments, there are two side pockets on the outside of the bag. The right side pocket is stretchy, while the left side pocket is gusseted. Inside the front zip pocket, there's yet another pocket that contains a detachable rain shield. With or without the shield stowed inside, there's room for a few small accessories.

The MM20 (next size up) is quite close in size to my Domke F-5XB, so I'm glad I managed to fit so much into this tiny little bag. This is my first Think Tank bag, and so far, I'm very, very impressed ... even moreso considering the bag currently sells for ~$45. :2thumbs:

Product information: Metz (http://www.metz.de/en/flash-units/product-ranges/system-flash-units/mecablitz-24-af-1-digital.html)

I am looking for a compact speedlight flash unit, and this is the most compact flash of the Metz line.

Or is there other valid alternatives?

Thanks!

Mirrorless Mover 20 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/co_photog/8737655106/) by MLR Photography (http://www.flickr.com/people/co_photog/), on Flickr

Think tank sent me a Mirrorless Mover 20 last week before the were officially available. The mm2o is a small but good sized bag as you can see from my photo you can fit a lot of gear into it. It is very well made, seems very durable and well thought out. It has enough pockets for filters batteries etc. It also has memory card slots and a place for a cell phone buit into one of the dividers which is a nice touch. I was looking for a perfect bag for my OM-D and this one fits the bill. The only draw back to this back is that you can't fit a ipad or kindle but they do have a bigger one that will.

Going through several pages on this forum, I lost count how many threads there were regarding bags for m4/3!

I recently purchased a G5 with two lenses, and I assumed that I could use one of my old camera bags. Boy was I wrong! My bags are either too small or too big!

I have several Lowepro shoulder bags, my smallest being a Nova 4 AW, largest is a Medium Format Commercial AW. My little G5 and lenses float too freely in my 4 AW! They work great for all my old film and DSLR equipment, but not for my G5!

I also have a top load Lowepro TLZ1, but I can only fit the camera with the attached lens; no room for an extra lens!! My old Lumix FZ50 lives comfortably in there, but definitely not my G5.

I dug through my closet and found my Nikon S2 rangefinder in its Crumpler Snauros. While the bag fits my S2 like a glove, my G5 won't even go in!!

I have several other bags including Tamrac backpacks and other medium size shoulder bags, but none are a perfect fit for my G5.

I know from personal experience (as you have probably guessed by the multiple bags I own) that there is no such thing as the "perfect" bag, but there has to be something better out there.

The Thinktank Mirrorless Mover 20 is the closest bag I can think of so far that will fit my needs (camera with attached lens plus three lenses). I searched B&H's website for bags, but the choices seem somewhat limited. I'm sure a Billingham bag will work well, but I don't want to spend more on a bag than what I paid for the camera!

Am I not looking in the right places, or are there really very few choices of camera bags built for m4/3 systems? It seems that bags are either too big or too tall for some reason.

What bag do you use?

p.s. For now I am using my Lowepro 4 AW until I find a better fit.

Peak design leash + capture plate on GX1

I'm looking for a camera strap for my GX1 and came across the peak design leash. Has anyone tried this and/or the capture plate on a GX1? Does the capture plate interfere with the battery compartment door? Does it hurt banging against your side for a long period of time?

I'm specifically looking for a strap that will go over one shoulder and let me carry my camera comfortably and securely at my side and still allow me to move around easily and carry other stuff (like my daughter). I'd also like it to work well with the external viewfinder and some of the longer lenses attached (like 25mm w/hood and 45-175mm w/hood).

The leash plus capture plate seems like a good solution - I can attach one end to one of the standard camera strap attachment points and the other end to the capture plate on the bottom of the camera, and hopefully have it hang near my waist with the lens pointing back and down with no or minimal twisting and bouncing.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated too...lots of possibilities out there but I'm hoping to get it right the first time!

Carrying a Gorillapod

Does anyone have any tips as to how best to carry a Gorillapod? I normally carry my camera equipment in a small Lowepro ILC 100 bag, which fits everything apart from my manual 135mm lens, which, when I take it at all, I carry in its own pouch, which is original to that lens.

When I used to use a Canon G10, I used a smaller Gorillapod, which fit easily in my pocket, but the larger one (intended for mirrorless cameras) which I bought for my E-P3 does not fit into my pocket comfortably, nor does it fit into my camera bag. I tried wrapping the legs around the shoulder strap, but that proved unsatisfactory. Does anyone have any elegant solutions?

Lance Camera Straps and Thumb Screw for my incoming new baby - the OM-D

For my two Fujifilm cameras, X-E1 and X100s, I use two Lance Camera Straps, non adjust neck straps - 48inches, black cords with orange rings.

I love these camera straps from Lance Camera Straps | Camera Straps, Cord Straps, Worldwide Shipping (http://lancecamerastraps.com/)

Now I ordered another non adjust neck strap, cord in beige and rings in black, and a thumb screw for my incoming black OM-D :)

I ordered this strap as 55inches as I'm sometimes going to carry all three cameras on my body :) I can carry the X-E1 and the X100s on opposite side of my body (left and right) and the OM-D hangs a little lower connected to the Thumb Screw.

This is a light way to carry three great cameras and you are prepared in every situation! Beats a single heavy DSLR!

Mirrorless Grip project - Need your opinions

Hello guys!

I am a student at university in Mecanical Engineering. I need to do a final project to have my diploma.

As you know, the mirrorless cameras are greater each year and a lot of person sell their dSLR to go smaller. The problem is that a smaller camera is not ergonomic when you have to do some shooting/wedding. It hurts at long time. And not everybody can afford a dSLR for pro stuff and a mirrorless for everyday photos.

So, I have to create an accessory that can be put under the body by the thread for the tripod. I would like to do something that can help the ergonomy, the comfort and the usefullness. So, when you want to have a small camera to carry, let the body nude. And if you want more comfort with big lenses, put the grip on and go for it! The camera I own is the Sony NEX-6.

Here is an exemple of a similar accessory, but I want something with more. Sony NEX camera Grip (http://www.jimbuchananspace.com/Sony_NEX_camera_Grip.html)

So, more grip, batterie access, sling shot ring under, side tripod threads, advance tripod thread for big lenses, detached parts, etc etc! Give me your opinions and what you want! If you would want something to have the best camera ever (physically), what you want to be in this accessory?

What do you think about this :

1) Multi interchangeable parts design

2) Different sizes interchangeable grip for best comfort (different material could me cool like wood, aluminium, leather, etc.)

3) Sling shot strap connector

4) Side thread for tripod in vertical mode

5) Battery grip if possible

6) Grip on the rear side of the body to maintain more comfortably the camera (thumb)

7) Accessibility to the AV/USB and battery compartment.

8) Light weight

9) others

Thanks a lot for your help, and maybe if the grip is nice and not expensive, I could sell it soon.

Has anyone got any current experience with the Eye-Fi Pro x2 16Gb SD card? I am toying with the idea of using it in my Olympus OMD-EM5 in conjunction with an iPad mini for when I travel. Not being overly technical, I have this vision of taking a photo and reviewing on the iPad mini (poor eyesight!!). I can then also use the ipad for storage until I get home to transfer to my iMac. Any comments/experience would be welcome before I do my dough..

Using FL-600R Flash in RC Mode

I recently purchased the FL-600R flash and have begun using it with my OM-D. I am trying to learn how to use it "off-camera" in RC mode. In the RC menu, I can set various elements of remote control TTL. One of the choices is Level with Lo, Mid, and Hi as alternatives. I understand that this affects the intensity of the "light communication" from the on-camera trigger flash to the remote, off-camera flash (Fl-600R). I have Level set at Lo, and it seems to be working fine. I have mostly been using it indoors with the remote flash no more than 8 feet from the camera.

My question is under what circumstances should Level be set to Mid or Hi. It would seem that increasing the intensity of the "light communication" might be needed if the remote flash is located further from the camera or if using it outdoors in bright light. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I just received my first lens cleaning kit with a blower, a lens pen and a micro-fiber cloth from online purchase.
When I squeeze the blower, air come out of both front nozzle and back hole of the blower. Should the air come out of the back hole?
Thanks

Formatt Hitech 67 or 85mm Holder?

Hi I have been looking at purchasing a modular filter and fancy the Formatt Hitech brand. I am planning on using it on my EM5 and wonder if it is really worth getting the 85mm over the 67mm? the smaller one is obviously cheaper and so is the glass that will go in it + it will be the most compact.
Will There be vignetting when using WA/UWA lenses with the 67?
Should I consider the 85 to be more future proof?
Should I consider adapted lenses which the 67 would be too small for? Or would the 85 be too small anyway?
I thought I'd play I safe and ask on here before I buy.
TIA

I see most people use a 3 stop ND filter for their Pana 25mm. Is this suitable for daylight pictures at an amusement park capturing stills?

I also like to capture some fireworks display in a nice effect. Will the 3 stop still be good for this situation?

I have just bought a flash bracket and am now looking for a short off camera cord. I have a Vivitar which looks just like the Oly one but what I would really like is a much shorter cord. The cord gets in the way and is quite stiff making it a PITA to use.

Anyone know of a shorter one or whether it is possible to plagiarise an existing cord to shorten it?

Skyblue Extension Tubes Mini-Review

So I got these tubes the other day, and I said I would test them, particularly with the 45mm f/1.8 to see how it performs as a macro lens. So I went into my garden and said, hey, looks there's a flower, that'll do. I took each photo at the closest focus distance possible, to give you an idea of the increased magnification possible. Click for full-size JPEGs.

The 45mm on its own:

With the 10mm tube:

With the 10mm and 16mm, 26mm extension in total:

Here's a pic taken with the 10mm + 20mm f/1.8 of my finger:

Image: http://i.imgur.com/3SWpkQTl.jpg (http://imgur.com/3SWpkQT)

And here's a pic of the tubes, I've decided to store them in my bag between my spare body and lens caps, to avoid dust getting in. They are made entirely of plastic. They wobble a bit.

I can confirm that AF works just fine with the tubes, however it's next to useless because the permissible focus range is not that large. Best to just set it to the minimum, and focus by moving the camera back and forth. These shots clearly weren't taken under any sort of test conditions, so shouldn't be taken as any sort of indication of the quality possible. If the lens you're using has sharpness to spare, it will be fine.

Flash, what to buy?

Hello all,

I own an Olympus E-PL2 with kit lens and, in some situations, I believe that the popup flash just isn't enough for my needs...

For example, at a birthday dinner in a kitchen with just 2 long fluorescent bulbs if I try to take pictures through a extendable dinner table (about 3 meters long) without zoom so that I can get everyone, i.e, 14mm, the pictures become dark...

I know I probably have to increase ISO settings, without touching exposure times to avoid blurred pictures, but I was trying to keep it under 800.

So, and according to some reading I've done throughout this forum, one characteristic that I look for is in a flash is it must swivel, but I don't want anything huge or too expensive... Unfortunately, I can't find anything smaller than the Metz 44 AF-1 (and I still find it big ) that can swivel, but I'm open to suggestions...

In a near future, and because my budget is always short, my idea is to buy the Pana 14mm f2.5..

Thanks in advance

I've got a decent bag for my camera that is fine for most uses, but it only has a somewhat small strap for holding/shoulder, and the bag is a bit large. We're planning a Florida/Disney vacation next year, so I want something as small as possible that can go on my belt. I just want it to carry my G5 w/kit lens and 45-150mm lens. I won't use it very often, so I don't want something expensive. Around $20 or less would be great if such a thing exists. Even better would be something I can get from Adorama since I still have my gc to burn. :2thumbs:

Gradual ND filter

Can you recommend good gradual ND filter? I am currently using cheap China filters which fit the Cokin P holders. They are doing the job but quit often I get a purple color shift in a blue sky. I can fix it in post, but would prefer to have filters without the color shift.

What filters are you using?

I got this today and it is amazing. I was having a bit of trouble getting my head around looking the screen to frame pictures, made me feel point and shooty..not that there's anything wrong with that:biggrin:
I slapped the VF-3 on and my whole photographic world changed. The viewfinder is so bright. That coupled with my new 14 2.5 has gotten the photographic juices really flowing again. I think I have taken more photos in the past week then I did all of 2012
