A Hard Delivery

We drove from California to NYC so that my wife could give birth in NYC where most of our family is. After 3 days of driving, 45 bathroom breaks, construction delays and torrential rain. We finally made it to NYC.

Had a checkup scheduled the next morning and the Dr said the baby was in distress and we needed to have an emergency C-Section. Now that he is safe at home, I wanted to share some of the scariest moments in our lives. He spent 7 days in the NICU and is now home. The Blonde nurse who looks as if she is about to cry is also my mother and his grandmother.

Test Shoot with OM-D E-M5

Did a test shoot in my 'studio' (off-white wall of my condo) with a couple of local models last week. Just wanted to share some of my favourites, shot with the Oly 45 and 75:

I'd been aching to shoot some strobist-type stuff but only managed to get some subjects in last week. The editing may not be to everyone's tastes. It's not my usual style - I generally go for darker and moodier looks.

I've had the OM-D E-M5 for just over 5 weeks now, and I continue to be impressed. Optically the 75 is sublime. The 45 really cannot be faulted either :smile:

Hot Air Balloon Festival

Here are the stills and the film teaser from my fun time at a hot air balloon festival with an "all access" pass to go down with the balloonists.

I got interviews and all kinds of stuff and I'll be making a video of it. Here's the initial "teaser" for the film and some stills. I'll link the overall set of stills thus far at the end.

I'd definitely overrunning my flickr with balloon festival pics, lol.

Edit: Forgot to mention everything was done with a hacked GH1 and hacked GX1 each doing both video and stills. All Panasonic lenses also: the 7-14mm, PL 25mm, and 35-100mm. The GX1 shot the 35-100mm all day and the GH1 used the other two. My G5 and 12-35mm were out on loan.

This is the inside of an old balloon that is no longer flightworthy that they inflate with fans so folks can look inside. I'm at the "wrong end" shooting through a tear in the fabric.

This Christine who is the pilot of "Patriot" which is the worlds tallest flying balloon at the moment. It's 165 feet tall, has a wingspan of 115 feet and is modeled after the space shuttle only it's 40% larger than the real shuttle!

This is Christine getting down and dirty on the final hot air inflation. The balloon is so large that even with a dual high-power burner setup it still takes and hour to get the balloon hot and capable of real lift. Here the balloon is starting to really tug on the basket (on it's side) and the tethers holding it down. It takes a whole tank of fuel just to get the balloon fully hot.

But Patriot is initially inflated enough to use the burners using two fans each driven by an 8hp gasoline engine. Even that takes quite a while.

Patriot really is pulling here as the temperature builds -- restrained at this angle by a crew managing tethers on the other side.

Sadly, for various reasons, Patriot did not get off the ground on Saturday and ended up being a display at the "balloon lighting" in the evening.

Tourist in my backyard - USS Hornet Museum with OM-D!

I've lived in Oakland for the last 2 years and the Bay Area for most of my life. I'd never visited the Hornet museum on Alameda until today. Loaded up the kids and drove out there to soak up a few hours' worth of history.

I highly recommend this spot if you're a military history buff or just enjoy history in general. There are guided tours of points of interest that are not accessible on your own. The docents make the experience so very rich in context and character.

Anyway, enough narrative. To the photos. All the shots with the 14/2.5, ISO800 below decks. The last shot is ISO200 in bright sunshine. What a great camera. I'm really impressed with the low light performance and autofocus in less-than-ideal light and the 14 is a great little lens.

I purposefully did the bare minimum of post production (I tend to get a bit hung up on post and wanted the photos to be mainly untouched).

San Diego had high surf warnings so I ant down to WindNSea beach in La Jolla to see. It was very over cast, foggy when I was there, so the images are a little dark, because there wasn't much sun, even at noon. All shot with an OMD + 100-300mm Panny

Portraits of the elderly, what's your approach?

Hi everyone,

I'm just starting to learn about photography but with every step of learning I get I notice I'm getting drag by a personal interest into portraits and photo journalism.

I would like to take some photos of my grandfather and also of some elderly people very dear to me and then try with some strangers. I think that with time some of us become better and some of us just keep become more of the same.

If you where going to take portraits of elderly people how would you do it?

Do you have pictures, please share them in here :D

I have seen people taking natural looking portraits other over using the dragan effect. Also another photographer takes pictures of the elderly only from a low angle in order to show them respect.

What is your approach?

Just having some fun with the cheapo 20$ plastic lens. :) Nice to not have to focus!

Odd workflow. Holga for some toy camera quality on the G5, shot using the cross-processing filter preset, but then thought it might work better in LR, so cropped to 1:1 ratio in LR and then edited in SilverFx. But hey at least it's not instagram? :wink:

Temecula Hot Air Balloon and Wine Festival

Went to the Hot Air Balloon and Wine Festival out in Temecula, CA on Saturday June 1. Was amazing to be so close and in the middle of all the hot air balloons. (lots of images to come)

starting off with 10 - walking the festival and getting our bearings during the day. They launch the Hot Air Balloons early in the morning (sunrise or so). They sell tickets for those that wants to ride in the balloons. then later on the day, they track and retrieve the balloons and bring them back (the two pics of the empty grass area.) Then at night, they inflate and fire up them up tethered on the ground and 'glow' to match music or the emcee's command.

Tips for Shooting Large Groups

Periodically I get emails from photographers on these forums, asking for tips on shooting large groups of people - - - maybe 15-20 or more. It is that time of year, when you may get such requests. I posted this recently, and thought I'd include it here for those that it may benefit.

Questions like - what camera - what focal length - how to light - how to pose - etc:

Any of todays digital cameras will be perfectly fine for an 8x10 or 11x16 print (and larger) of a group of 20 people or more. Things to take into consideration would be whether it is being shot outdoors or indoors. There are different challenges with both.

Outdoors:

* your lighting requirements, the interacting you wish to have with your subjects, and the look you are after- - - will dictate what focal length you need. I use my zoom lens so I can get into the right position and frame from there. I focus about 1/3 into the group for good focus through the depth of the group

* First thing I look for is decent lighting and a suitable background. In the case of this large family, they wanted their house in the background so that was set. Natural lighting was difficult as the sun was high and strong - so the angle to the house that they wanted as the background, could not be used without them looking into the sun and being obliterated by strong highlights and shadows. My location for the group would be where I could turn their back to the sun as best as possible and fill with my flash

* flash needs to be relatively close to the camera and higher than the lens for large groups. On a day where the light is softer (my preference), I dial in minus 1 1/2 to minus 2 stops of flash output compared to the ambient light reading and can even use a shoot through umbrella. On a bright day like this portrait - it required all of the output I had from my portable Metz flash without umbrella - to barely fill in the shadows.

* I prefer to use only 3 or 4 arm chairs for large groups so that with people sitting on the arms - standing in behind and sitting on the ground - there is variance in the heights of the heads. I group people by working with only one or two people at a time - - - putting them in position and building out like I would if putting flowers in an arrangement.

With such a large group, I want to have the chairs and group in an arch to follow the curve of the lens - for best depth of field and focus. While it isn't visible in the finished group portrait - if you look at the shot of me moving the people into position - you can recognize the curve of the group

Oh - and with flash - - - don't forget that you have to keep under the camera's sync shutter speed. That dictates many things like distance you are from the subject/focal length, fstop used etc.

Focal length used for this portrait is 30mm (20mm on my D200) - - - and you can see how far away I am from my subjects - but still close enough for effective flash power and communicating with them.

Exposure - f8 @ 1/200'th @ 200 ISO

A "heat" is a batch of molten steel. Here two specialists "work" it to refine the chemistry by adding alloys and fluxing out residual elements -- all while trying to keep it in a narrow target temperature range. It's not easy work and requires experience to really do it right.

Panasonic G5 and the 12-35mm f/2.8 lens. Although, I ended up recropping this from portrait to landscape so this doesn't necessarily look like the wide angle shot it is.

Hammarkullen Carnival

Hammarkullen Carnival is the biggest and the most colorful cultural street carnival in Sweden. The carnival comes alive towards the end of May every year with different music, dances, magnificent display of culture, stalls, games shop and street market.
