Lasers over Pittsburgh (comments, suggestions pls).

The annual Pittsburgh Arts Festival took place a few weeks ago. Especially exciting was the grand re-opening of the Fountain at Point State Park, a city icon that has been turned off for renovation for four (!) years. To commemorate, the city set up a special beacon-like set of lights, illuminating the fountain from one of the prominent buildings downtown.

It was incredible--I couldn't possibly do it justice. I had trouble deciding on what to focus on, how to expose, etc. But I like some of these. I'm hoping for suggestions for improving (either things I could have done at the time or for PP). Overall I think this was a neat scene and I like the composition but I'm not so sure about actual "quality" with the wide range of light/dark involved. I have a LR4 and the Nik plugins available. Some of these look "overcooked" when I tried messing with LR levels--even though for some (esp the last one) I think they look a little neat that way.

Shot these all with the 20mm and my Hexanon 57.

Bangkok nearby floating market tips..

Hi All,

I will be having a short vacation to Bangkok next month. I am intending to visit a floating market, there are plenty, the most popular ones Damneon, Amphawa are out of my list due to the distance and lack of time.

So I intend somewhere nearer such as -
- Ta Ling market
- Don Wai market (believe mainly just for food)
- Bang Phli market.

Well, among these shortlist, which are best for photography? (I know they can't match Damneon).

Which has the best boat ride experience, which can bring you to real authentic feeling village houses like in the ghost movie Naeng Nak.

Any tips other than photographic advise is much appreciated (eg. how to avoid scam, transport tips, etc...)

I just got back from a trip to Alaska. Needless to say, I took many pictures (and some videos) and it's going to take a while to get them all sorted. I decided to start a thread for the best, and I'll add to the thread over the next few weeks. I'll also post some in the specialty threads (7-14 mm, 100-300 mm, birds, and flowers, most likely). Here are a few to start out, all taken with the 100-300 mm and either the G3 or the G5.

beauty after rain

After many hours (and days) of constant raining it suddenly stopped and I went out and experienced one of my best photo moments this year. I met some canon and nikon guys all bissy trying to catch the moment of beauty. I had some serious troubles to capture everything with the sensor from my e-p3 :( But it could be worse I guess. I Dont know how much better the om-d would done this considering its better DR capabilities...? all shot by PL25

Panoramic photos without a tripod

Hi guys

I wanted to know if it is possible to take panoramic photos without a tripod.

A mean when someone takes lots of pictures and then merges thm together to create a long and beautiful panoramic photos.

How can I do it?

I have a gh3.

Also I have a panny 7-14mm and a Voigtlander 25mm f.095.

Can I do it with any of those two lenses?

I used my 9-18mm to shoot many of the images at USD (University of San Diego), which look more natural when I use the tools in Lightroom 4 to remove some of the distortion resulting from a Ultra Wide angle lens.

I spent some time today reworking many of the shots from my USD walking tour, and I'm posting three here for your review and comments.

This was an excellent opportunity to develop my post processing skills.

These really aren't intended as HDR. I took 3 shots of plus one and minus one EV and stacked them. I realized in PP that I probably should have taken them plus and minus 2 EV, but oh well. The first one is really close to how I saw it. The second too seem a little on the HDR side, but I think they work ok. CC is welcome as always.

Serene Beach This Evening

I headed over to our local beach tonight - with the intentions of shooting a bit of video. When I got there, I realized that I had left the quick release for my ball head - at home.

So I went about looking for different angles than I have shot before - to create a set of still images instead.

Camera : Olympus E-PL1 : 14-42mm and 40-150mm Olympus m4/3 lenses

I went there in May on a photo shoot with Tatra Mountain photography for 3 days. Had a really good time, it's a lovely spot and the trip was well organized.
I'm pleased enough with the pics I got, I took my GH3 with 7-14, 12-35 and 35-100 lenses. I shot RAW and jpg and I'm very happy with the quality of the jpg's.
Here's a link to my flickr site of the Plitvice pics, these are all ooc jpg's untouched except for a couple I cropped a bit.

Turf cutting with Sigma 30 in Irish midlands

I spent last Saturday on the bog saving turf sods for fuel. It's a popular summer pastime for us midlanders , not sure how widespread it is elsewhere?

Turf cutting (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciarancreilly/9027018615/) by Ciaran C Reilly (http://www.flickr.com/people/ciarancreilly/), on Flickr

The work is quite tough, and I've been nursing some very sore limbs the days since :frown:. Sometimes, the scenery can be stunning and interesting, like here, the highest hill in the background is an extinct volcano! The foreground shows sods ready for stacking, or footing as it's called around here, while the exposed peat face is in the mid ground, this is where the material to make sods is harvested from. I hope that I'm not explaining the obvious too much, I think it's interesting though!!

Turf cutting (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciarancreilly/9027017281/) by Ciaran C Reilly (http://www.flickr.com/people/ciarancreilly/), on Flickr

The peatlands are fairly absent of interesting fauna apart from flies, but the flora is very interesting, and depends very much on the nature of the peat present and how it accumulated. There are Wikipedia links to more information under each picture in Flickr.

The Sigma 30 was just about the perfect focal length for here, not too wide or not too tele. I also think the out of focus in the last picture is very pleasing, if exaggerated on my part!

Just been on Holiday for a few days to Cornwall near Lands End, as we neared Cornwall my wife remarked how the light was changing (Cornwall is famous for the light, thats why lots of painters flock there, hence the Newlyn School of Painters). The sky seemed bluer, my wife summed it up in one sentance...Gods turned the lights on....
The sky really was that blue, no polarizer filter used, all jpeg's
My holiday also took in Salisbury and the Eden project, but will post those later

Hello everyone,

First image-only post here. Just getting up to speed with my OM-D and 14/17 tandem. Met up with Ranxoren to get the 17 in San Jose and took a trip across Highway 84 to the coast where I grew up. The light was amazing - I don't usually shoot barns but the light demanded it. Made my way through Half Moon Bay and up to the Moss Beach bluffs above Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and had the place to myself for the most part until a nice guy with a 4x5 field camera showed up just before the sun went down.

Really enjoying this camera. I was concerned I'd be losing a substantial amount of image quality when switching from my former camera - an X-Pro 1 - but have been impressed at what the Olympus is delivering.

OT - *Sharp* MFT WA Lens for Landscapes?

Well, allow me to first start off by saying "hello" to this community. I am new to this forum since last week. I just sold all of my Canon DSLR gear (5D2 and assorted L lenses) in favor of an E-M5 and a couple of starter lenses (25 1.4, 45 1.8 and 12 2.0 - still waiting for the 12 2.0 to arrive). I purchased this setup about a week ago so I'm still learning the in's and out's that go along with any new system. As I'm getting older, the thought (and my back) of carrying around the full DSLR setup in my travels was something I no longer wanted to deal with. The OM-D looked like a dream come true.

My passion is primarily landscapes and like to print large when I can (i.e., 18x24). I am on the prowl for a wide angle lens in the MFT format that has a serious reputation for being sharp, edge-to-edge. The one thing about the Canon 16-35 MK II that killed me was how soft the corners were. Because of that, I'm a stickler for edge sharpness.

So, being the newb here I'll ask the newb question - what do you guys/gals recommend?

Thanks in advance - I think I'm going to like this forum!! :)

After having tasted (and spent a lot of money in buying wine  ), my girlfriend and I decided to visit the museum placed in Barolo.

The purpose of the museum is to tell the history of wine from ancient times to nowadays.

Strange rooms ... not what i expected ...

So I’ve been back a week from our latest road trip. About 7000kms in 14 days. Two photographers. No kids. No fixed itinerary. 7 cameras. 1x 4 wheel drive. All we had to do was make Mossman, Qld in 10 days to be able to shoot a wedding we’d booked.

My m4/3 kit consisted of 2x EM5’s, a 12-35, 45mm, 60mm macro, 75mm 1.8, 75-300 and a Samyang 7.5mm fisheye that I bought from pixelvandal. Thanks Pavel. No, you can’t have your lens back. :-). I also had 3x FL50R’s and a FL600R plus a tripod and a selection of filters. I could have used a super wide. Maybe next time. But I did have a 12mm and 21mm for the Leica so I didn’t miss much.

I also took my Leica kit. The Leica shots are on Leica Place.
Road Trip with the M9 and other stuff. (http://www.leicaplace.com/f23/road-trip-m9-other-stuff-170/)

The wides were definitely the most used, especially the fish. Then the 12-35 and the 70-300. The primes got little use until the wedding. I was really impressed with both the fish and the 12-35. Excellent lenses at their optimum apertures. The 70-300 was a bit disappointing at the long end, mainly because even the IBIS in the Olympus can’t keep up with it at 600mm. A tripod or higher ISO yielded immediate improvements. I really wish I had lower ISO’s than 200. That’s the only place I missed my Sony’s SLT with it’s ISO 50. Sure didn’t miss the weight though.

I’m also going to get a leveling base for my tripod head. It’ll make life much easier, especially when trying to shoot stitched panos. I’ll also invest in a new filter system for landscapes. The B&W filters are great but a pain to use. The old Cokins are not good enough. I’ll need to keep a couple of 58mm filters for the Leica but I can see a Lee system in my near future.

The cameras worked flawlessly. I had to adjust the Leica’s rangefinder due to the 1500kms we drove on gravel and 4wd tracks. I managed to knock over a tripod with an EM5 attached to it. Fortunately the tripod took most of the impact. I did dent the hot-shoe of the camera. Easily fixed with a Leatherman. Camera works fine.

So here’s a few pics from the trip.

My local Garden Society's Annual Show has a "Sport" class in it's Photographic section and as I'm not a keen sport photographer I thought I ought to attempt a few shots. I went to a local Autograss event and apart from getting covered in dust I managed a few interesting shots, one of which is here. But I have to ask, bearing in mind the vehicles have no windshield "Is this really so much fun?"

So I took some pictures recently, all pictures from Colorado are with the 14mm panasconic pancake and the pictures from lake Michigan are with either a 28mm konica F3.5 or 40mm F1.8. All with an OM-D

Comments and criticism are greatly appreciated.

A few from the last couple of days up in the Torridon area of Scotland (for my money, the single most beautiful corner of planet Earth that I've laid eyes on).

These are the only ones I've done anything with so far. All EPM1 with the Sigma 30, other than the boat one which was with the 40-150.

Upper Loch Torridon and Beinn Alligin, sunset

Beinn Dearg and the Abhainn Coire Mhic Nobuil

Loch Diabaig

Most will find these last two way too dark and gloomy (even compared to the rest of my work, which is always dark), but anyone familiar with the mountain in question will probably recognise the atmosphere of the place. They were worth taking for that alone :)

In a sad aside, my friend and I were in the region the day of the balloon crash that killed 3 Brazilians and injured 20 or so - so please, if you're heading this way and planning on going for a ride, be very particular about checking accreditation before going up. It's a fantastic place but unfortunately there are some dodgy operators around...
