I probably should have done this before. I have leftover prints from shows and I'm putting them on eBay. The advantage is the eBay reputations system, easy PayPal payments -- and best of all I don't have to maintain an e-commerce system on my website.

Here's where I'm starting to put them up -- but I have quite a few more to set up sales for and I'll be doing that over the next week or so.

Looking for some advice from my fellow music lovers here.

Mike Johnston of TOP recently had a post about some relatively affordable equipment (http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2013/05/ot-all-you-need-for-great-sound.html), promising great sound for $600 plus an iOS device of your choice. Assuming a budget of $600 or less, does anyone else have any recommendations? I'll probably be mostly listening to Spotify 320kbps streaming via an iPod touch.

Links to Amazon and B&H for recommended gear would be appreciated. I'm looking to make a purchase soon...

Though I've not been here very long I'm ready to post my pet peeve of photo sites.

It really frosts my rear end to start reading a thread that I really want to view the photos only to be greeted by post after post where the pics are no longer available! I kind of understand when the Flickr is not a pro account as they have limited room, but when I see post after post after post where it's a pro account or a personal web address and the pictures just aren't there.

I don't post a lot of pics and have none here yet, but I know that when I do, that they will be there as long as the thread is there.

I'll sit down now and put the soapbox back in the corner.

Post your ambient noise sources

While I love playing music while spending time on the computer, sometimes I prefer some flavour of white noise. I love the following sources which all should work for pretty much all devices.

You are listening to Los Angeles (http://youarelistening.to/)
Police scanner traffic from LA (and other cities) super imposed on top of free ambient electronic music. Very much a Bladerunner feel.

Coffitivity - Increase Your Creativity! (http://coffitivity.com/)
Cafe sounds - good for when your Hipster blood levels are low :D

Rainy Mood (http://www.rainymood.com/)
Very nice rain/storm sounds. You can pause the video while keeping the track going.

If you have something similar in your bookmarks, please share!

It was April and the Aboriginals in a remote part of Northern Australia asked their new elder if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was an elder in a modern community he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.

Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the tribe should collect firewood to be prepared. But being a practical leader, after several days he had an idea. He walked out to the telephone booth on the highway, called the Bureau of Meteorology and asked, 'Is the coming winter in this area going to be cold?' The meteorologist responded, 'It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold..' So the elder went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared.

A week later he called the Bureau of Meteorology again. 'Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?' The meteorologist again replied, 'Yes, it's going to be a very cold winter.' The elder again went back to his community and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.

Two weeks later the elder called the Bureau again. 'Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?' he asked. 'Absolutely,' the man replied, 'It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever.'
'How can you be so sure?' the elder asked. The weatherman replied, 'Our satellites have reported that the Aboriginals in the north are collecting firewood like crazy, and that's always a sure sign.'

A theory on photog forums incivility

Was just thinking about photo site forums incivility (this one excluded -- more like DPR and especially lately, 43rumors).

Lots of folks complain about "wanna-be" photogs on those sites. Referencing what "pros" would do (whoever they are -- it's like the term fascist, it's whoever you want it to be), and claiming other people are mor-ons, etc.

I'm beginning to believe the real issue is not that the forums are clogged with failed, wanna-be photgraphers, but that they are clogged with failed, wanna-be writers. Because they can't actually create a blog, newsletter or article that others willingly read, they prefer the boards, where they don't have to register and no fear of being edited, to insert their "droll" or "witty" (at least in their own eyes) humor into other people's conversations.

Instead of sticking to facts and topics, certain posters (I've been guilty of this in the past myself. I'm trying to reform!) descend into snarky, what they think are witty comments (something like this very post! If that's not ironic, lol). So, people are trying to figure out how to be some kind of sarcastic editorialist more than they are interested in coming to an understanding.

I'll be covering mainly my job in entertainment and life in LA...specifically Hollywood. I'll also try and cover gear on occasion for those interested. Thanks for looking!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The LA Times, (April 21), has a rather extensive article on War Photography. Much different than I expected, more of War Photography 101, an intelectual examination, comparisons and contrasts between art (paintings) and photography. Some interesting quotes:

"George Bernard Shaw said he would willingly exchange every painting of the crucified Christ for a single snapshop of him on the cross."

Something to ponder ...

James Salter, at the beginning of his new novel, "All That Is", writes "Everything, writes Salter, was happening at two speeds, 'the desperate haste of action and also at a lesser speed, that of fate.'"

This is so true, in combat everything, but you, is moving in fast motion and your heart is pounding out of your chest in a destrate attempt to catch up.

The article is titled "The shutter speed of fate".

Interesting reading.

Gary
