Hi first post.

I own a G2, fairly new to photography and want to have a try at macro stuff. I own the kit lens 14 42 Mm

I have bought a raynox 250, while its OK I am not getting as good magnification as I thought. Just reversing the lens seemed to get magnification. I then reversed using the raynox attached and got the level I would like.

The question is there an attachment I can buy which will connect the raynox&lens combo to the body?

Guys
I recently had the opportunity to try out a pre-production G6 with the new 14-140 lens. I just received permission to share the photos. Just posted them, and got a surprise with Flickr's new look. The slide show, especially, really displays the photos in a very attractive way.

G5 very slow processing and recording to SD card

Hello,

I'm a user of the G system for about 2 years by now.
I've started back in 2011 with a G1 that I still keep as a back up camera.
I've always shoot using RAW+Fine JPG setting with my G1 and now with the G5.
Now with the G5 the time the camera take to record the pictures to the SD card is annoying me.
If I shoot about 4 or 5 consecutive pictures the camera blocks me from shooting for about at least 20 seconds. No matter I press the shutter button it wont allow me to take any more pictures until it processes and saves the pictures to the SD card.
This makes me lose a lot of picture opportunities.
It happens on single shoot mode, so you can imagine if you set to burst mode it could get even worst. I take a series of 5 or 6 photos and better wish I got one of them good enough because I may not have the chance to try shooting again right after that burst shoot.
Mainly I do bird photography and it is very frustrating when I take 4 or 5 pictures and then the bird stands right the way I want... but pressing the shutter button one more time will do nothing!

It happens that even about 15 to 20 seconds or more after taking some photos when I switch to Play mode the camera is still processing the images and does not allow me to review the pictures.
My G1 camera also have some limitation regarding the process and recording of information to the card due to the buffer of the camera, but not this way. It rarely let them down.

I've gave up using a Class 10 - 20MB/s SD card and start using a Class 10 - 45MB/s SanDisk Extreme SD card but the results are the same. I don't see any difference...

Did Panasonic increased the pixel count of the sensor (and consecutively the file size) but not increased the buffer processing power?

I'm considering change to a Olympus OM D because of this limitation.
Are any other G5 users experiencing the same, or this could be a malfunction of my camera?

Just purchased a G5 2 lens kit,interested in adapters
a)to try a few of my 43 Oly lenses on the G5
b)to try a few of my OM lenses for MF
I am inclined to buy the Panny adapter for the 43 lenses, but wonder if anyone has ideas about the better eBay sellers for adapters for the OM lenses.
TIA
I find this forum very useful and look forward to sharing some of my pics here.

Why is the GH3 rarely mentioned when talking about high end m4/3s?

I listen to a lot of photography podcasts, and the latest trend seems to be everyone talking about moving to mirror less, be it m 4/3s, NEX, or Fuji. But nine times out of ten, when the talk revolves around m4/3s, its the Olympus OM-D everyone raves about.

Sorry for the short rant, but it really bugs me to no end, and I wonder if there is really any justification for it, other than the obvious similarity of the Oly to an earlier body style.

I'm new(ish) to the 4/3 format and to the panasonic interface. I usually can figure things out on my own with some time but there are a few on my gf-3 I can't seem to sort out since buying it three weeks ago.

First, regarding drive modes, I can manually choose between single, bracketing and timer. Is there a way I can use both countdown timer and bracketing together?

Second, as far as custom function go, I've been able to use them in the PASM modes but it seems that as soon as I switch from one mode to another, the custom function turns off and I have to manually go into the menu again to activate it. Is this normal or is there a way I can keep the custom settings on while switching from one shooting mode to another?

There was another question I had but I seem to have forgotten it for now....

I'm curious to know if there is a way to find out more details about the battery of the G5. All I can find so far is the small battery icon on the top right hand corner of the LCD screen, but it doesn't give a detailed description of the percentage left on the battery. I checked the menu, owner's manual and PDF manual, but I can't find a way to see a detailed power meter. Is there a way to see more details, or is the little battery icon the only info that the camera provides? When my battery was about to go dead, the icon lit up and began to blink.

GF5 RAW image size

Okay, I've had my GF5 for a couple of months now, and been shooting in RAW. The specs say the image size is 4000x3000, and so far iPhoto has stated the images as such. I've started messing with HDR, using Luminance HDR to create the images I overlay to get the effect I like. In it you can select the size of the image, so I of course want the largest to work with, which is 4016x3016. When I pull up my finished HDR and compare it to the RAW in iPhoto, they are different sizes, and you see more in the image from the HDR photos. Does this mean that the sensor actually grabs a bigger image then Panasonic states, and they crop it in the metadata so that image apps, like iPhoto, only use the cropped image? See below.

Im wondering if there are any other alternative battery grip's in the market for the Panasonic GH3? Something similar to what's out there for Oly OMD would be fantastic that adds that extra bit of ergonomic holding area without the big ticket price tag. The panasonic OEM grip for the GH3 at $200 is at a steep price albeit functional and Im sure of great quality (it does however have a huge flaw for video folks who will mount it on rigs and other such things, as the tripod screw on the grip isnt in the centre!!!!).

I have looked around and came up with nothing to my disappointment.

Hi,

So I have the 2 kit lenses, 45-150 and 14-24. What lens do you think would be my next logical choice?
I am quite amateur so does not need to be a pro lens, i'd be mainly doing landscapes as everyone I know hates having their photo taken  Maybe wouldn't mind trying some macro.

Thanks,

Hi. So the G3 is my first adventure away from compact cameras, so still learning the ropes.

I'm trying to work out the difference between P and A modes. I know that in P you are supposed to be able to adjust both aperture and shutter speed, but when I turn the dial, the aperture changes with it. The system changes the speed to match it... which is the same as what happens in A mode.

Am I missing something?

thanks

G5 Pop Up Flash not Working

I'm not sure what menu button I touched by mistake, but my pop up flash has been disabled. It is even greyed out on the menu screen not letting me access it.

I gave up, restored the camera to factory settings and was able to get the pop up flash to work again. The only changes I made originally were to to the sound/beep function; I placed it in total silent mode. I also switched the function of "use camera without lens" option to "on". However, even when I switched those two items back I was still not able to access the flash in the menu. I even tried accessing the flash menu in different setting (A,P,S,M and even iA) but no flash. It was only when I reset the camera to factory settings that I was able to get the flash to work again.

I read through the PDF manual but it was of no help.

I need help on this. I hope my camera isn't defective as I really like it and would hate to have to return it! :frown:

Flash (not small) for GX1

Unlike the other active GX1 flash thread where the OP wants something small, that's not a primary focus for me.

While I don't necessarily want a huge flash, I realize the GX1 is a small camera and many flashes will appear big on the sexy GX1. I also realize the GX1 is not a fantastic body for flash use, at least not while also trying to use a LVF2, though the GX1 will be my chosen body for a while (I have 3). I'm also not much of a flash user, however there are times when I need or want something more than the little on camera unit (I used a Canon 430EX on dSLRs before selling that kit recently).

I'm leaning toward the Olympus FL600, seems like a decent flash for the $300? Ideally I can pick a good, reasonably priced flash that will work with the GX1s I have now and still work well with other Panasonic or Olympus bodies in the future, probably the GH3 when they are about 1/2 their current price.

With these parameters in mind is the FL-600R a top contender, am I missing others that will work well now and with other m4/3 cameras? Bounce and swivel are important and I have 7-14, 12-35, and 35-100 lenses.

Thanks

Okay, Saturday I'm going to be out taking a lot of photos for National Train Day. I want to be able to do some HDR work too. I've figured out how to get my camera to do the exposure bracket. But I'm not very steady to hold the button down and keep the camera still while it shoots the 5 bracketed shots. So I'll put it on a tripod, but as far as I can tell, I'll still have to hold the button while it takes the shots. I haven't been able to figure out how to get the 2 sec delay from button press to get it to take the bracketed shots. Is the reason I can't figure it out because it can't do it? I can select either a 2 sec shutter delay, or a bracket. If there is a setting I'm missing, I'd be grateful to have it pointed out. Thanks.

A couple days ago I was outside and taking some pictures of the kids in the yard. My boys were running around doing something, and I had the camera on one of them with the shutter half pressed to focus. I was keeping it there for a few moments waiting to take the picture as I followed his movement, and I noticed the camera would seemingly lose focus for a very quick fraction of a second. I didn't time it, but it was a repetitive thing happening about every 3-4 seconds. I didn't notice it affect any pictures, but it was very noticeable before taking a picture. Now usually I use the LCD, but this time I was actually playing around with the EVF. I'll have to try it again and see if I notice it on the LCD, or if I can time it to take a picture right when it happens; but I wondered if anyone else has noticed this and if it's normal. I'll have to check, but I think it's set to AFF.

In one of the Fuji X forums (Fujix-forum.com) a "wait club" thread for the X100s was created. I was one of the "wait club members". The purpose was to make the wait time for our X100s:s more bearable. A club for early adopters, we who preordered fast, a long time before the camera actually hit the store shelves.

I have searched for a "Panasonic Lumix G6 wait club" but I haven't found such a club/thread here; so I've taken the liberty to create the Panasonic Lumix G6 wait club here :)

The "rules" for being "a member" are:

- Write about when you preordered your G6
- Write about why you preordered your G6 (what your expecting of your G6 and how you are going to use it... Video work, photography... Etc)
- Write about where you are from (so we know where on the globe the G6:s hit)

Let the G6 party start!

or am I missing something.

Pinpoint AF on G5

Hi All,

I've just got a G5 with the twin lens kit, so far very impressed with my first MFT camera.

I have a quick query on the pinpoint AF, is it only available in certain modes? It seems to be greyed out for me in all modes except C1/C2.

It's probably something really simple but the manual doesn't seem to go into this AF mode in any detail.

What am i doing wrong?

Thanks,

I got my G5 kit and have been playing around with it. I love it so far. Has more of a DSLR feel, albeit smaller, then the Oly did.
I have one question, the lever by the shutter button, I want it to change shutter or aperture values depending on what mode, S/A, but all it does is do an EV adjustment. Is this by design, or am I doing something wrong?

Hi guys,

I have noticed recently that when I shoot with my 20mm on my g5, the shutter sound appears different on occasion than with my 14, Oly 45, and my 14-140.

I was worried that something was sticking but the exposure seems fine. The shutter sounds like it is taking longer to close than usual.

Is this a known 'issue'? Or nothing to worry about?

From February of this year, a write up in 'Image Sensor World' features what is termed as a radical development from Panasonic... saying that the company 'announces that it has found the holy grail of color image sensors design - the way to implement the color separation with no losses' by 'unblocking' incoming light and controlling its diffraction at a microscopic level.

I stumbled upon this article as I was searching for discussions online about colour bleed on sensors.. and issue that perplexes me every time I shoot.

I think we are still at the earliest stages of intelligent sensor design and I expect some big leaps forward in the coming decade. I also expect that small camera formats like ours will be the main beneficiary of these advancements.. large camera will disappear like the dinosaurs as technology moves forward.

Panasonic G2 remote problem

I have a Panasonic G2 ...

I have now bought 3 remote controls for my camera.

The first 2 worked at the start but after a while they stopped working, then after a while 1 worked and stopped again. I've check the batteries to make sure they are fresh... it's so frustrating.

So I gave up and bough a third one (each time a different brand) and again, it does not work.

I am thinking now it must be a problem with my camera as it can't be a coincidence that I've bought 3 from 3 different vendors/shops/countries and none of them end up working?

The transmitter and remote can communicate with each other so I'm thinking that there is a problem with the little cable or the port... could the port be blocked or something?

What could be the problem? It's driving me crazy! Many thanks in advance :)

GX1 new user macro setting query

I have joined this forum as I took delivery of a GX1 today and am slightly overwhelmed by the options available. As with most (all?) supplied manuals the GX1 manual is thorough enough in setting out the functions that are available but very weak at explaining how to actually use them.

I purchased the camera and lens (LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S.) to use attached to a Swarovski spotting scope to digiscope birds.

Often it is recommended that when digiscoping the camera is set to macro mode and to use Aperture priority -the latter to try to get the fastest shutter speed possible.

I've been going through the GX1 maunual but the only ways I can find to get a macro setting is to use the pre-set flower option or intelligent auto - neither of which give me any control over the aperture setting.

Can anyone tell me how I can set the camera to macro mode while retaining control over aperture and ISO or any other parameters?

I also have a Canon Ixus 300HS which can do what I would like to do with GX1.

many thanks in advance

G5 random noise on low light long exposures

Hello,

Before I purchased my G5, I did lot's of long exposures with my old G1.
As expected there were a little bit of noise, but perfectly acceptable.
Because the G5 deal better with high ISO settings, I thought that on long exposures under low light (before sunrise, for example) I would be presented with more clean photos.
Last weekend I get up earlier and went to a spot to take a few photos of a bridge with the sun rising from behind.
I toke several long exposure photos before the sunrise using ISO 160 and a ND400 filter to smooth the water and found that the resulting photos that I did with 60 seconds or more than 20 seconds have a strange random coloured noise.
It is a different noise from the one we used to see on high ISO settings.
The photos I toke with exposures of 8 or 13 seconds look nice and without any trace of that uggly noise.

I never had this problem with my G1.
I'm a bit shooked and disappointed, because I was expecting to get better results than the ones from my old G1.
Is anyone having this same problem?
Could be caused by any camera setting?
I was using Oly 12-50mm @ 14mm, iDynamic Standard setting, iResolution Standard setting, ISO 160, aperture priority, f/5.6 to f7.1, mechanical shutter with remote shutter.

Do yo guys think its a good idea to get a backup camera, and if so worth spending the $$ to get a second M43?

Here's my situation I'm going on vacation next week - woohoo. I own a Oly OMD EM-5 - love the camera its great. Back in the day I owned a Nikon DLSR which failed on me while on vacation in Aruba. Since then I've included a cheap-ish point and shoot, just in case something similar happens to my main camera.

That back up sits mostly unused, though my kids use it from time to time.

Any ways cutting to the chase, I see a used GF1 body being offered for 150 in another forum, I'm not sure if that's a good price for a discontinued used camera. A quick check on eBay seems to indicate its not a bad price but I can't be sure.

tl;dr
Is it a good idea for a second M43 and is 150 good for a used GF1 body?

Just ordered the G5 with 14-42 and 45-150. My final decision was made mostly due to the nice write up by entropicremnants post. My reasons for switching is the fact that built in VF and ergonomics. Also the fact that most people feel the IQ is not as good, but pretty close to the more expensive EM-5.

Shameless Plug, I currently have my E-PL1 outfit posted for sale

Hi Guys
I came across this interesting review of GH3 . Its a beautifullly built camera and offers a brand new sensor. Now on the paper , it all looks beautiful but how much it translates into real is a question mark from a site which specialises in Panny G series for videos .This reviews compares it with GH2 , Nikon D5200 and Canon 5DMkIII.

Now on the paper , it all looks beautiful but how much it translates into real is a question mark from a site which specialises in Panny G series for videos .This reviews compares it with GH2 , Nikon D5200 and Canon 5DMkIII.
Cheers

I was at a concert a few days ago and noticed a guy in the corner with a big pro looking camera on a monopod. I didn't think much of it as I took a few snaps and clips with my lowly GX1 + 20mm/1.7. Today I came across what must be the footage taken with that pro camera and I have to say the GX1 compares very favorably IMHO. What do you think?

Coming from a GF2, I was very excited that my GH3 finally came in. When I open the box, I noticed that all the plastic bag that holds the manuals, battey, cables are wrinkled. I'd watched couple GH3 unboxing and the first thing I see when the box opened is the manual cd. Mine is in the bag with the manual. I took one picture and the number is P1000012. I hope I am not too paranoid.

My User Experience Review of the Panasonic DMC-G5

My latest blog post is a user-experience type review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5. The G6 is coming out and the very excellent G5 may be available for much less.

I did a short review here on the site, but the blog post pulls together a lot of my posts on the G5 including talking about the E-M5's "purple blob" problem. There's a lot of image samples sprinkled through it as usual, lol.

I've been looking on this forum awhile for a used GH3 and so far I've only seen one! This is a far cry from the OMD where it seems many people are dumping them on the used market. Can anyone explain this; is this because the camera is that good; or maybe because there's a shortage on the primary market?

Anyway, I'm not opposed to buying new, but I usually like to consider the used option first since I've had such wonderful experiences buying used on here.

GX1 and 20 1.7 distortion

Hi,

I have a GX1 and shoot with the 20mm most of the time. I shoot in Raw and process in LR4. Anything with parallel lines it I really notice the distortion and I spend quite a bit of processing time stretching images back to vertical. Is some software missing, or do I need to put a lens profile into LR4? I know that the camera is supposed o correct the barrel distortion.

Thanks
