Reason #117 I love my OM-D

Random pointless post...but here's another reason I love my OM-D:

I programmed my AF/MF switch button onto my REC button and have set it up so that as soon as I touch the focus ring on the lens, I get the magnified view...this has made precise/night time shooting/focusing an absolute joy! My eye never has to leave the viewfinder, even if the camera's having trouble focusing!

With my DSLR (a Canon 5D Mark II, which I love very much and admittedly its low light focus abilities are significantly superior to that of the OM-D), if it fails to focus, I have to throw a physical switch on the lens to switch to MF, then turn on Live View, forcing me to use the LCD instead of the viewfinder, then magnify my focus point, then focus, then exit the magnified view to compose and then take the picture.

Whereas with the OM-D: I hit the REC button to switch to MF, focus, it automatically magnifies my focus point, then jumps back to normal view when I've finished focusing so I can compose, and take the picture.

That is all...just a random, pointless, I'm-so-freaking-happy-with-this-camera post.

Cheerio!

Changing exposure control affects histogram/blinkies?

When you change exposure control (Center weighted, spot) on the em-5 does it affect how the histogram or the highlight/shadow blinkies display?

Also, when in the left dial video mode is the exposure control fixed in multi-zone metering mode?

Thanks!

E-PL5: BULB mode without having to keep pressing the shutter button?

Hi guys,

I've taken a look at the manual and googled a bit, but I seem to be a bit dense today. How can I take long exposures with the E-PL5 (BULB mode) without having to press down the shutter button manually all the time?

Is this only possible via remote or is there an in-camera setting I haven't yet discovered?

Thanks, guys!

I have cracked the LCD screen on my OMD E5 :(

I can source a new screen from USA and have someone who repairs mobile phones etc who says he could fit a new screen if there was a service manual or YouTube video . Has anyone done this yet and can you offer help?

I have been quoted 4 week lead te to get this fixed through Olympus and Luton camera repair and I need it doing much quicker as in the middle of wedding season!

OM-D Frustration

I am so frustrated with my OM-Ds that I’m ready to sell everything and buy a Canon 6D to go with my old reliable 5D and just give up on building a compact, lightweight system. It seems as if almost every time I use the OM-Ds, some new problems jump up to hit me in the face.

I am not a member of the computer generation, so menu-diving is next thing to rocket science for me. I shot film for 35 years, 30 of them as a commercial photographer. I shot mostly transparency film in all sizes, used an incident meter, and had a very precise exposure technique. I took my readings, set the shutter speed and aperture, brought the camera to my face, focused, and took the picture. The camera did not get in the way of my photography.

I moved from Olympus OMs to the Canon EOS system in 1993 because aging eyes required autofocus. From there, it was relatively easy to move into Canon digital. The menus were not too difficult, and with most things, I could simply set it and forget it.

Not so the OM-D.

My first OM-D was bought new almost a year ago. After quite a bit of struggle, I felt I had it pretty well sorted out. Then, last week I bought a second body in like-new condition with fewer than 1500 clicks from a fellow forum member. I then attempted to set up both cameras so that their workings would be identical.

Yesterday, I worked a wedding as the second shooter. Both cameras exhibited behavior I had never seen before. Most of the time, when I bought either camera up to my eye, the viewfinder gave me a brief magnified view, then switched to the normal view – this without me touching any buttons. This has never happened before, and I have no idea what is causing it.

Then later, as the light began to fail, I turned on Live View Boost so I could see what I was focusing on. It did not work on either camera. I had to give up on the OM-Ds altogether and use my Canon, which as always, delivered the goods.

I’m leaving this Saturday for a week-long assignment in El Salvador. This is the kind of thing for which I switched to M4/3s. I certainly don’t want to carry the weight of even a minimal Canon system, yet, I don’t feel I can trust the OM-Ds.

And they are such incredible battery-hogs!

Please forgive the long rant. If anyone can offer helpful suggestions, I will appreciate it.

New to M4/3s... OM-D, EP-5, or wait?

First time poster here and I was hoping you guys could help me with some advice.

I would describe myself as an advanced enthusiast/amateur photographer. I'm currently using a DSLR system, shooting mostly landscapes/cityscapes and the occasional portrait session. I plan to keep my DSLR system but I'm looking for a lightweight mirrorless to complement it. The m4/3s would be mainly for travel/vacation or a 'carry everywhere' type of camera should I ever need it - for those moments that I didn't bring the big heavy SLR but the iPhone camera just won't do.

All that being said, what would suit me more? The OM-D or the EP-5? or should I wait for the next rumored announcement of a camera in September?

I'm currently leaning towards the EP-5 because:
Focus Peaking - I love using older MF lenses
1/8000
Smaller form factor

OM-D - Weathersealing - I do travel to somewhat inclement places at times and I don't baby my gear. I don't abuse my gear but I do see it as tools and well, tools will wear and tear over time.

I don't like the EVF - I owned and loved the X100 for a period time. But, I hated the EVF. I figured that since the OM-D EVF has a similar number of dots as the X100, I'll probably dislike the OMD EVF. Is this a safe assumption? I'm thinking that since the VF-4 has more dots - perhaps it would be the better VF for me?

Last option - wait for the new announcement in Sept 9. I'm hoping it would be an OM-D level or higher camera - EP-5 features + weather sealing would be perfect as long as the size isn't too large. I read on 43 rumors that it might have 15 stops of dynamic range too, which would be crazy perfect!

What do you all think?

Hi guys,

I've had my OM-D for a little under a month now...and I've discovered an intermittent problem with it.

I generally leave my cameras on all the time. I just let them go to sleep between shots, but I rarely turn them off.

However, with the OM-D, sometimes there's an issue where the camera won't wake up if it's been in sleep mode for a long time 20-30 minutes or longer.

Usually, a half-press of the shutter button will wake the camera up just fine. But sometimes, it won't do anything, and even turning the camera off and on won't help, and I have to turn the camera off, remove the battery, put the battery back in and turn the camera on...has anyone else experienced this? It's rather annoying...

Both Newton's Fourth Law and the Fourth Law of Thermodynamics state that any money obtained from the sale of guitar and photo equipment must be reinvested in the same pursuit so as not to upset the forces of nature. Or so I tell my wife. So in order not to mess something up, when I sold off my D7000 and remaining lens I had to spend the money on camera stuff, specifically m43's. So I got a lens and an EPM2. I took a few shots inside with my 7-14, and got a lot of the dreaded purple blobs (John Grigg's analysis about this is very good and spot on) with the new body. Needless to say I was thinking I should send it back and use the GX1 as my smaller, easy to carry body, especially with the 7-14. I figured I'd give the mini a try outside anyway as we were going to visit my stepson and his wife to see their new puppies. I was really happy with how small it was and how easy it was to carry the body, a 20mm, and a 14-45. To make a long story short, I ended up really liking it, and it will be taking a place alongside my other bodies for the foreseeable future.

I bought an E-M5 in January, and just sold off the last bits of my Nikon kit. I'm really enjoying this camera.

I was able to get the HLD-6 from my local camera shop on sale last weekend. (Turned out it's still cheaper at Amazon, but I like to support the local camera shop so they stay around.)

However… I'm torn about whether to keep it, or return it. My return window is closing fast.

It improves handling dramatically, at the expense of bulking up the camera a bit. It handles a lot more like the D80 it replaces with the grip on. Seems like this would be especially useful if I attach a speed light.

However, you've got to remove the thing to replace the battery. This alone may keep me from using it very often.

Those of you who have the grip — do you use it often? Is removing it to get at the battery a nuisance in practice? (Seems like it would be particularly, when shooting out in the field. If I know I'm going to be shooting tomorrow, I often pop out the battery to top it off. I might avoid doing that with the grip attached.)

Anyone used both the Olympus grip and the RRS grip, and can compare the two? (The latter offers access to the battery.)

My Canon DSLRs have something called Custom Function 4, which allows one to autofocus by simple pushing a button on the back of the camera. Once set, the camera stays focused on the same point until it is changed by the operator. Does the OMD offer any such capability?

Hi,

I am totally new to photography so I hope you can help me on this. I want to get a Micro 3/4 camera but my budge is limited. I found a Olympus EP2 (without basic lens) and a Lumix 14-42 len set on Craigslist for $280. Do you think I should get the set? Should I just get the body and buy the len separately.

Thank you very much for all your help.

I really appreciate it

This was my first real outing with the camera and it didn't disappoint. I was used to carrying an E3 and I gotta tell you - the significantly lighter camera was so nice to pack around. I used the 9-18mm for all these shots sometimes with ND filters and a polarizer for the waterfalls. Next week I'm off to Havasupai for 3 days in the canyon so I'll have a trip report and photos to post from that trip. The canyon country of the American southwest is so awesome and I live here too so I get to explore it a lot. Enjoy

OMD EM5 - continuously focusing when on Single Focus?

OK, so I've had my camera for a while, haven't used it as much as I'd like but am finally getting a chance to more.

AND, I also picked up the 75-300 zoom this week - just got here today. Too late to go out and use it, but was just playing with it in the house and I noticed something.

Have the camera in single AF mode - but when I point the lens and different objects the camera automatically focuses the image without me even partially depressing the shutter release - so it's acting more like continuous AF it seems.

Is this normal behavior that I just didn't really notice with the 12-50 kit lens? I did pop the kit lens back on and sure enough it does the same thing, so I'm thinking it's normal. With the kit lens I was at the wide end of the zoom a lot and this behavior is not as noticeable there.

Can't wait for tomorrow to get outside and use this new lens!

Enabling touch-screen on OMD-EM5?

I've rented an OMD-EM5 from one of the Internet sites to try out the camera. One thing I can't seem to get working is the touch screen. The manual indicates that I should be able to make selections on the 'Super Control Panel' using the touch screen, but the touch screen seems inactive.

I've hunted around for the touch screen control and think I've found it (in the 'gear' K-Utility menu, 'Touch Screen Settings'). I've verified that it's set to 'On', and also tried setting if 'Off' and then back to 'On'. Still no reaction from the touch screen.

Is there something else I need to do, or does sound like this may be a defective camera?

(BTW, I'm loving the form factor of the EM5 -- nice and compact and feels more similar to a film camera than most digitals manage. I'm not too enamored of the menu system on this camera, though. I think I'd ideally like the body and image quality of the EM5 but with Panasonic's menus. I'd rented a GH3 the other week, and while the body is much larger and more cumbersome, that camera has both a lot more dedicated controls and a superior/more intuitive menu system. Much easier to learn your way around.)

Oly 4:3 300mm vs M4:3 300mm

Oly currently has the 4:3 adaptor (http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/lenses/pen-omd/mmf-3-adapter.html)on sale for $99 and the 4:3 70-300mm lens (http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/lenses/zuiko-lens-ed-70-300mm-f4-0-5-6.html) for $299, so essentially $400 for the combo.

In contrast, you pay $549 for the m4:3 75-300mm (http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/lenses/pen-omd/m-zuiko-digital-ed-75-300mm-f4-8-6-7-ii.html) lens.

Is it worth considering the 4:3 lens and adaptor, or would you just hold out for the m4:3 lens and shell out the extra dough? Certainly size is a factor, but are there reasons to go with the 4:3 lens combo?

Its been over a year since I took this photo. I still love every moment of using E-M5 or simply admiring its design. Still using the same setup as above wherever I go except the 12mm f/2.0 has been replaced with 17mm f/1.8.

Tried & owned many mirrorless models such as Fuji X100S, RX1 & NEX-6, but so far none can replace M4/3 system for me. E-M5 excels almost in all area.

How about you? See yourself sticking to M4/3 in the near future?

I'm going to have to learn how to be more careful with this camera, so understanding the weak points should help us all keep these great cameras working.

OMD wheel falls off 1 mo out of warranty, cost: $186!

So less than a month out of warranty the control wheel from my OMD falls off, which seems to be a regular problem, and the scum suckers want almost $190 to replace it! Does this seem reasonable to you?

Sorry, I just had to vent.

Certainly if anyone asked me right now my recommendation would be to avoid Olympus cameras. Unreliability and poor quality control is one thing, but this seems pretty outrageous to me.

Panorama Mode in OMD EM-5

is there a way to use the Panorama Scene mode in the OMD with custom JPEG settings?

Olympus Viewer 2/3 stitches the ORFs together, but always processes the final image with "Vivid" picture mode, Gradation=Normal, Sat/Sharp=0, etc...

I have to admit, stitching images with Viewer and the Pano SCN is MUCH easier than using Hugin. But you're stuck with the Pano SCN image presets.

To do the attached Panorama, I used Olympus Viewer to correct distortion with the lens profile. Then I used LR5beta for post processing. Then I used Hugin to stitch.

I was really hoping to use Olympus Viewer for a one stop shop pano processor....

Several months ago, at the suggestion here on the Mu43, I updated my OM-D E-M5 to the latest firmware 1.6. I just checked my camera to confirm that firmware revision number. Now however, when I go to Olympus Corporate site, I don't see the 1.6 version. It implies that 1.5 is the most recent.

I have two E-M5s. My older one is the one I upgraded (and it still says camera body 1.6), while the newer one I have has not been upgraded beyond version 1.5 and shows that in the firmware rev. I was going to upgrade the new er one to 1.6, but I sure can't find it now!

Am I nuts? Or what is going on?

Newbie question - E-PM1 sharpness in live view vs. final pic

Hello guys, my first post - I'm pretty new to the world of µ4/3 cameras, and actually to the world of (more serious) photography. I've purchased an E-PM1 and have been using it for some weeks with adapted legacy lenses exclusively - a Hexanon 50mm F1.7, a Vivitar 28mm F2.5, and one of those cheapo Fujian 35mm F1.7 CCTV lenses. So far, I love the results, the colors, the feeling of the tiny camera with that ridiculous amount of glass in front, and am over-applying shallow-depth-of-field effects on pretty much every photo, just as you would expect from a newcomer. However, whenever I try to take some more sharpness/detail-oriented picture, I am somewhat disappointed.

I guess it would be quite helpful to hear from some experienced people about this, since the problem is one of expectation: When I set the focus on my lens using the magnifying (x14) function, the live picture on screen looks A LOT sharper than applying magnification to the same area on the pic I actually take. This is particularly obvious when photographing text.

I've been playing around with the camera all afternoon and I get the same results using a tripod, holding it in my hand, using 2 seconds delay for the photo to get rid of all shutter shake, using IS on/off, noise reduction on/off, noise filter off/low/standard, taking under/overexposed pics, using ISO 200-800, using shutter times between 1/40s and 1/2000s, and so on. The picture detail always looks blurry compared to the preview, which is of course slightly frustrating - as if it was saying "this is what you could get from the lens, but the camera won't allow that to happen".

Is this normal and to be expected, can it be helped by using correct settings/perfect exposure, or is this completely out of the ordinary and indicates a broken camera?

Thanks for your help!

Camera epl3 14-42 kit lens polarize filter
I am a newbie, I understand I need lessons at a minimum I need to read tutorials, and yes I need to experiment. That being said

I am going backpacking/fly fishing in the eastern sierras next week with a tripod

I would like to shoot pictures to process in photomatix for landscape HDR
Right now I have my epl3 set up as record button is myset 1 3f 1.0EV
Which mode A P S M should I be shooting in?

I can't figure out how to set it up for more than 3f
Would like any other combination that an accomplished photographer can suggest, if this is possible, or is what I have acceptable?

Thank you

Power Supply for E-M5 + other cameras -DIY

I just made a power supply so I can run my E-M5 from a 12V batter (e.g., jump start battery, car, etc.) without a $200+ dollar battery grip. I'm not into reinventing the wheel, so got ideas from others and took it from there. I've included sources so you can see who the smart folks are who came up with the original approaches. This is geared to the E-M5, but it will work for any camera. All you have to do is put the right connector on the end of the supply so it mates with your device.

The basic approach comes from this link where the DIY project results in an AC adapter. Basically, you make a mock battery that you insert into the camera. You have to leave the battery compartment open, but for tripod shooting, that should be a minor issue. I do astrophotography/star trail shooting so need power out in the field which why I made the supply.
The linked page is in Polish, but Google translate will fix that for you. See bottom of the link page for You Tube video of device in action.
Radom na fotografii - Zasilacz sieciowy do aparatu Olympus OM-D EM-5 (http://www.radom.ws/index.php?n=Foto.Zasilacz)

I don't really need an AC adapter at the moment, but do need a long term battery source for doing my star trails and other astrophotography shots. So instead of an AC adapter, I made a variable regulated power supply that provides the right output voltage (8-8.5V for the E-M5) when plugged into a 12V power source.

I initially made the power supply for my Pentax DSLR that coincidentally has the same input power requirement so all I had to do was replace the Pentax jack with an Oly "battery". I bought a cheap $10 BLN-1 battery, removed the cells and wired the power supply to the correct terminals. Now I can just plug the power supply "battery" into my E-M5 and power it all night long if I want to while out in the field.

The following link is to a file that originated as a blog post that shows how to make the power supply. It's for the Pentax K-5, but as I said, just replace the Pentax jack with an Oly "battery" and you'll be good to go. The blog seems to have died, so I PDFd my copy of the project and posted it here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10452497/DIY%20Power%20Supply.pdf
Here's a link to a source for the regulated power supply:
3A Adjustable step down switching voltage regulator (http://www.dimensionengineering.com/products/de-swadj3)

For the camera power supply, I used a small project box from Radio Shack. However, I used the power supply plans to make a unit for one of my telescope mounts. For that, I just housed the power supply in a piece of 1" PVC pipe with rounded end caps. I drilled through the end caps to pass the wires through each end, strain relieved the wires inside and out with mini-cable ties, and used silicone aquarium sealant to seal the holes. The casing is only about 6" long and is quite water resistant. I wouldn't leave it out in the rain, but the end caps are tight enough that I have no worry with it lying in dewy grass.

One final mod I am going to make is to make the Oly "battery" portion of the camera power supply detachable as the plans advise (I made it last night and didn't have a plug/jack set on hand). Besides providing protection from the cord being stepped on/yanked while in the camera, it will allow me to make an AC power supply in the future (if I decide I need one) without having to make another "battery".

Hope this is useful to folks.

Question about E-PM1 / E-PL3 Art Filter mode variations

I own the E-PM1 and enjoy using the different Art Filters on a regular basis, especially in their bracketing mode that reduces the need for artsy-fartsy post-processing on the computer :)
As I understand in the E-PL3 you can adjust (some of) the Art Filters, with at least two (strength) settings available? How are these different from the single-setting Art Filters in the E-PM1? Is either of the setting equal to that in the E-PM1 and the other one is stronger or weaker or just looks different? Considering getting the E-PL3 as well (hate changing lenses outdoors) as it nears the end of its product cycle and the price is good but maybe I should just settle for another E-PM1. The mode dial is not that relevant to me as I shoot in A mode 99% of the time, so it all boils down to the Art Filter variations.
Thanks in advance!

My trip to the Philippines is drawing near and my pre-order of the E-P5 will not be delivered in time. It may be a blessing in disguise

Anyhow, it is the rainy season in the Philippines and the weather sealing on the OM-D and 12-50mm lens is very attractive to me now. Anyone have anything to share or stories to tell related to the weather sealing abilities of this combo?

Just got this with the 12-50 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it. Can't wait for the 14mm and 45mm to get here. What a joy this camera is to shoot, with the viewfinder again reminds me of my Pentax LX. The image quality is top notch, focusing very fast, and the IBS - WOW!!! A couple of things I do miss about the nex 5n is the HDR and multi-shot night mode.

Here are a few shots with the kit lens

Does anyone think there will be a huge rush by current EM5 owners to dump their old EM5s in order to buy the new EM6 or EP5?
I am still wondering whether to get EM5 at this time but the prices , new and used, have been stubbornly high. I am skeptical about large numbers of people dumping their EM5s, assuming EM6 has the same sensor. What does everyone else think?

Decisions with Olympus Sale

I've been considering what system I am getting since I have no mirrorless system, and my first 2 choices were the new P5 or the OM-D along with the kit lenses they come with (either the 17/1.8 or the 12-50). With the sales going on, I want the 60/2.8 as I love macro and I also know I want the 40-150 as it's a great general lens for a great price (on sale).
Other possiblities:
If OM-D: for wide- I love the idea of the 9-18 M. Zuiko (Could I manage with the 12-50, 60, 40-150 without the 9-18?- on sale but adds much to price) cost w/out= $1699.00 and with = $2298.00

If P5: for price point it'd be the 14-42 for a walk around. (Could I manage with the 17, 60, 40-150 without the 14-42?- as a setup would that work? cost w/out=$1999.95, and with = $2298.95.
So for either set up, I'd be purchasing an add'l lens either the 9-18 w the OM-D or the 14-42 ii with the P5, if needed. I understand the advantages of the newer camera, and the 17 1.8 looks like its a great little lens, as the OM-D is also great in review and highly recommended.
I just sold a lens of mine to be able to do this and if I care for it, I may very well sell off some other equipment. I am traveling this summer, sometime, so want a nice few lenses to travel with whatever I get. Any suggestions as to which set-up to get to start out with? Thanks!

PL5 do not recognsied my Lens Pana 100-300

Hi,

Not sure if any have already encouner the issue.

Have a brand new PL5 and just acquired the Pana 100-300 mm lens.
But when I put the lens on the PL5, it is not recognised. (black screen and no info on lens firmware, and my shutter button is blocked).

When using another lens, all OK

Any got this before?
(is it the lens which is not working? )

I have tried to see for updating the firmware but it is actually 1.1 and say all fine (the lens do not appear so no info on its firmware either)

Could it be a lens defect (would be an issue as I am living abroad and can barely bring the lens back for exchange under warenty)

Is there a way to re-initialise the firmware of the PL5 without using the tooll (like through the SD-card?)

Thanks
Not sure if any have already encouner the issue.

Have a brand new PL5 and just acquired the Pana 100-300 mm lens.
But when I put the lens on the PL5, it is not recognised. (black screen and no info on lens firmware, and my shutter button is blocked).

When using another lens, all OK

Any got this before?
(is it the lens which is not working? )

I know that this has been gone over in every forum forever but maybe I've just not seen a plain English answer.

If I have a 300mm on my 7D it's "really" a 480mm equivalent. A 300 on my OMD is a 600. Now, is there really a difference in what is being captured or is the field of view just a lot more narrow?

Obviously, I've got a mental block!

As described here (http://www.mu-43.com/f42/double-humped-omd-40932/#post398749), Olympus sells an add-on conical rubber eyepiece for the VF2 external EVF.

Image: http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/ProductImages/fullsize/olympus-ep9.png

It sells for $15 on B&H. Pretty steep for a ring of rubber!

But wait, it gets better. Here in Europe it sells for something closer to $40!

This is clearly ludicrous, but much like the pricing of the BCL15 body-cap lens, it's somehow standard behaviour for Olympus products.

Does anyone have any suggestions for some DIY options instead? I don't know much about working with rubber but it isn't a very complex piece... I'm thinking something with Sugru perhaps.

EM5 focus point.

I have figured out to use the fn1 button to reduce the size of the focus point. I am constantly moving the focus box out of center and take pics. The box consistently is located out of center on the LCD and in eye viewer. When I review the pictures later in aperture and it shows focus point. Focus point is always in center.

If I don't reduce the focus box and move box off center it shows off center in aperture.

Ideas?

Thanks for your help.
