My subjects in this backlit shot were too dark and I had to select and lighten them in the raw image.

Nice to know that there's lots of flexibility in the dynamic range of a raw image from this camera.

Subjects are the Chairman of the Henderson County NC Democratic Party and Congressman Heath Shuler and his daughter, who has obviously had lots of practice waiting while her father is involved in political discussions.

After having owned an EP2 for 4 or 5 days, I have to say that the feel of the camera is the most pleasing aspect. Using manual mode is more fiddly than I am used to, however, I'm also finding that IAuto is pretty damn good, so the need for M mode might not arise so much.

First impressions are that the EP2 was a wise investment. I think my Canon 30D, and the multitude of accessories that go with it is close to retirement.

Whether or not the EP2 will outperform my Canon G9 and G 10 remains to be seen. However initial reactions are that the EP2 is a bit special.

And what happens when you change the value when you use a M43 lens? Is it then ignored?

Camera arrived about 5pm today and the battery seemed to take forever to charge. I read the manual while it was charging.

Friend Jane recommended Olympus PEN E-PL1 for Dummies and I downloaded the Kindle PC version. I'm glad I did. The menu system is not exactly intuitive.

Biggest surprise was how huge the depth of field can be on a 20mm lens at f/1.8

I posted a few pictures in my Flickr gallery here:

I'm stumped. I turn the dial to scene mode and select one using the arrows but the only way I can select a different scene mode is to turn the dial to another mode and then back to scene mode. Is there a way to change scene modes from within scene mode? Found another post that allows you to do it through the menu using the ok button. Bunch of steps as well but I guess that's the answer. I know, do a search in advance. Admin please delete this post "for the good of the order."

Hi. I was experimenting with my brand new EPL1 on auto mode and scn mode trying to take photos in a room with very very low light. Anyway I press the shoot button and the came kept on focusing and focusing without letting me take the photo. I switch to other modes with the same result (even on P or A). I know the photo wouldn't be great but I don't like the idea of the camera keeping me from taking the photos I want. Any insight on this? Thank you!

The UPS man dropped off a nice brown B&H box about an hour and a half ago. First impressions:

* The build quality is excellent. If this is inferior to the E-P1/E-P2, I'd love to see what one of those is built like. The EPL1 feels better than my Canon G9 did and I considered it a well built camera.

* The size is about what I expected -- just right.

* The LCD is just fine as far as quality goes. And the refresh rate is very good. Totally usable, though I'll probably go for the VF2 soon.

* All of the controls have a quality feel to them, especially the mode dial.

* Image quality -- WOW. Even with the cheapo plastic kit lens, the image quality is outstanding. I really can't believe I am getting these kind of pictures from a camera this small. Having been a DSLR user for 7 years, I've always thought of compact cameras as a compromise between convenience and image quality (and until MFT, they were.)

* Movie quality -- pretty good. It's good enough for what I'll be using it for. I didn't buy it to be a video camera but it's good to know it's there when I need it.

* AF speed -- yep, it's fairly slow. About the same as my G9 was. Not a big deal though since I won't be shooting fast action with this camera anyway.

Now I can't wait to get the 20/1.7. If I'm getting pictures like this with the kit lens, I can't wait to see what that baby's gonna do :-)

Oh and I only posted this now because the battery is charging. It's killing me!!!

Just Received My E-P2

Recieved my E-P2 with the 17 2.8 lens. FL-14 flash and an extra battery. I am very, very impressed with the image quality. Bit of a challenge...

Recieved my E-P2 with the 17 2.8 lens. FL-14 flash and an extra battery. I am very, very impressed with the image quality. Bit of a challenge moving through the various set-ups, particularly deciding how to choose my own focus point but I'm almost there. May end up dedicating the arrow keys to that function.

Upgraded to firmware 1.1. Focus is faster but it wasn't all that slow to begin with.

I shoot RAW and my update to CS5 arrives today so I'll be able to do the conversion directly in CS5 (vice my old CS3 which won't recognize the files) without using Master 2 which is a bit cumbersome and requires a save to tif.

I'm impressed with the results from 17 2.8. Bit more depth of field wide open than I expected but it's very sharp. The files take alot of post processing filters without any degradation in image quality. I use NIK filters pp extensively. Dynamic range is better than a point and shoot by a large margin but not up to my 1.3 crop sensor's.

The pana 20 1.7 arrives today. Really looking forward to using that as well.

I'm also impressed with the FL-14. Exposure is nicely done and it fills a nice size room with light. Very small and easy to put in a pocket.

I think I'm going with a wrist strap. I removed those annoying and noisy metal clips that the neck strap attaches too.

My plan for this camera is as a walk around. I've got a 1DMKIII with a 50 1.2, 16-35, 135, 180 macro, 70-200 2.8IS and all the kit that goes wit it but even with one of the lighter lenses it's just too much to carry around all day. The image quality of the e-p2 is close enough that I know I will really enjoy it and use it a lot more than the MKIII which I'll still use for more serious work.

I think the 4/3 format is an excellent vehicle for transitioning into a Leica M9 for example. I'm looking forward to getting a Summicron 35 in a couple of months to use on e-p2 in the mean time. So the evf will be my next addition.

I really enjoy this forum and look forward to a long time with the 4/3's format.

I would like to draw your attention to this German blog post, titled "Taking PENs to the Roof of the World in Ladakh". (No affiliation of mine whatsoever.)

The blog as such - PEN and Tell ( I've heard of kiss and tell, but this doesn't make much sense to me - is a general Pen blog and the post details the use of the two cams on a motorbike trip to Ladakh. The author also links to his own blog, where he will post images soon.

To paraphrase the post for those who don't read German: Last year he travelled the same route with an E-3, SWD 12-60, 7-14 and SWD 50-200. Wanted to shed some volume and weight. The E-PL1 was set to be the main cam, while the E-P2 was on reserve duty. Lenses were: mFT 14-45 mm, Panasonic 7-14 mm, 1.7/20mm, Zuiko 70-300, Voigtländer 1.1/50 mm and Nikon 1.8/105. IQ was no worse than with the E3, on the contrary OOC jpegs were better. Soon though the two PENs changed roles. Reasons were: Grip on the E-p2 is much better, he found he pressed buttons by mistake all the time on the e-pl1. It does happen on the e-p2 but more rarely. The missing orientation sensor on the e-pl1 was a pita. In the extremely bright light of the Himalayas 1/2000 often was not fast enough, the e-p2 offers an extra stop down to 1/4000. The 4/3 70-300 proved a worthy addition even though rather heavy, the two very fast lenses were only rarely used, like inside tempels.

My local camera shop is doing the EP-1 with 17mm lens and optical viewfinder for £399, so I am tempted.

My worry is the review on DPReview that talks about poor focus speed.

DP Review says the focus speed on the EP-2 is better than on the EP-1 but then it says there was a firmware update and I can't make out whether that applied to the EP-1 and whether than improved focus speed on the EP-1

Does anyone have any information on this?

Anyone else know of any other UK supplier at a good price?

I have an EP1 and love it but need to use a viewfinder so I'm thinking of selling it and getting the EPL1 in it's place which is available with £75 cashback from most retailers until 31st Aug.
The EPL1 is in stock most places but the EVF is either not stocked/not in stock or they're asking silly money for it.
I would prefer for it to look "real", i.e. match the actual light situation. Imho this behaviour contributes to the unnatural CCTV look that I personally hate. (Btw, I'm talking E-P2 here.)
I had set the camera down and downloaded images, and then saw what the E-P1 looked like with finder and skin. So I had to take a shot of it I was so amused.

I just got an EPL1 and I have to say that am kind of surprised that the camera is as nice as it is. Based on everything I've been reading all I see is how the EPL1 body is cheap plastic, the UI is unacceptable, the screen is terrible etc.

Well I may not know much but I find the EPL1 to be a joy to use. The body is indeed plastic but it feels well made and sits quite comfortably in the hand. In fact I found it much more comfortable in the hand than the GF1 I played with. The IBIS is terrific and FWIW I don't find the button centric control layout to be particularly problematic. It's a lot like a point and shoot control wise but still quite useful. Even the screen which seems to have generated a good deal of scorn isn't that bad. I have done some MF testing with my OM lenses and it works great (I also like the fact that I can use the VF2 on the EPL1).

It may be the low end Olympus PEN but I find it to be a well thought out photographic tool. I'm looking forward to getting that M42 adapter in the mail so I can attach my Super Tak 55/1.8.
As a potential E-P2 buyer upgrading from an E-P1 purely so I can use the VF-2 EVF I have a query.
I know the E-P2 is available in black with a black grip and silver with a black grip, but can anyone tell me if it's available as a silver body with a tan grip similar to the E-P1 white body/tan grip?
I ask as I've noticed some websites shows pics of it with what appears to be a tan grip.
Many thanks.

My E-P1 is on the way and, quite frankly, I'm new to everything photography related. I have read and re-read many posts and blogs, but wondered about a few beginner aspects. I got the zoom lens kit, a 50mm OM and 58mm Minolta legacy off ebay (along with adapters) and plan on ordering a spare battery. Other than a case and lcd protector, is there anything essential that I'm missing? I know some people use a UV filter, but I haven't ordered one and wondered if they are necessary? I don't have a tripod, but plan on this being a hand-held shooter.

I hope this hasn't been beaten to death already. I looked for a beginners thread but didn't find one.

Thanks,
Almost forgot . . . I'm a Mac user. Will iPhoto be ok for RAW files, or do I need to step up to something better?

I am noticing something strange with my E-PL1. When I have anti-shock mode turned on and the built-in flash popped up, the flash actually fires twice when the shutter release is pressed. I have left the flash settings at factory default.

The flash fires once just before the anti-shock duration kicks in and the LV blacks out.

The flash fires again when the exposure starts.

Is the first flash actually the preflash for metering -- and it has to fire before the LV blackout because the reading is taken off the sensor? If it is indeed the preflash -- it actually looks way too strong.

Anyone noticed this with their E-PL1 or other Oly m4/3 bodies that support anti-shock? What could be the explanation for this?

I hate cluttering the card in RAW+JPEG mode, prefer RAW only. With these features it makes it very easy to make a quick JPEG to share.
Ingeniously simple. Couldn't do it with Canon :frown:

Hi,

A quick (maybe stupid) question: after formatting the card in the camera it can't be read on my PC through USB reader (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit). Is this to be expected?

When using Canon I usually left the camera in the bag, get the card out and copy the files using the reader. Connecting E-P1 to the PC every time is not that big of a deal, but the side cover seems a little week...

I introduced myself yesterday.. I had just pressed the button on Amazon and was waiting for my shiny new EP-2, with 17mm lens and electronic viewfinder VF-2. Well it (sorry She!) arrived today.....

My initial thoughts are:
1/ There have only ever been what I could call a few stand outstanding looking cameras; the Canon T90 (which I used to own), Olympus OM series (all pretty especially the all black ones, though I have never had the pleasure of owning one) and now the EP-2. It is gorgeous! and even better when holding it.

2/ I had heard a lot about its slow auto-focus... Actually its not that bad, not as quick as my 5D mk2, but quick enough for my purposes. Though in truth the manual focus is so nice to use, I may well just use that !

3/ The screen on the back, is no where near as good as my Canon, but its more than usable, in fact I'm happy to manual focus with... although the VF-2 is even better.

4/ Using the camera in total manual, where the screen gets darker or lighter as you the change the shutter and aperture, makes me think these would be great little cameras for people wanting to learn the basics....

5/ Did I say she was gorgeous?

6/ I hope I get a nice weekend as I intend to take her out and leave the Canon at home. Then I can see what her RAW output is like!

Hello all,

I've been messing around with my E-P2 indoors with really bad low lighting and noticed that the LCD is not clear. I can see streaks of blue and orange going down the LCD screen. When I activate the menu screen the LCD is clear and crisp. This is normal due to the low lighting correct? My point of shoot never had this issue and since I never really tested one of these camera in person I am unsure what I should expect.

Thank you.

Hi BBW thanks for all the information you have made available to me. For the time being I am going to sit on my wallet. I wish to stay around this forum, as I prefer it to the "dark side". I am sure you know what I mean.

I must admit I had no idea that there was so much information floating around about this style of camera whether Panasonic or Olympus. It is a good learning experience on here. No doubt I will still ask the odd question.

I really thought I would be going to the Ebor meet next week (Horse Racing) complete with a new camera. Do you allow pictures not taken with :43: cameras? If not I quite understand.

Thanks for all the help.

I've had this camera now for four days and tried almost every conceivable combination of adjustments there is on the camera. I tried it on a tripod, handheld, IS on, IS off, different focal length, 17mm 2.8, 14-42 3.5-5.6, various Nikon lens with adapter (Voigtlander), various Tamron lens, in bright sun, light shade, heavy shade, A, S, M, P, Auto, Scene, and more. I used Raw and jpeg LF and didn't consider the others.

After slight pp and printing, the images were just a tad off of in-focus. I posted some I thought were good enough for web or posting here. However, after seeing some others in the same post I became thoroughly disappointed. See my images in the Nature thread under Humming Birds.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Chaps,
I would appreciate any advice and experience of others as to their optimal settings used on the E-P2.
I shoot mainly Vivid or Natural JPEGS and mainly in natural light.

I would love to hear comments on the settings for:-

Sharpness
Contrast
Saturation

Noise Reduction
Noise Filter.

Clearly I am looking for the sharpest images possible with little blowout and minimum noise and no 'funny' shadows. I am new to digital and can't quite understand why someone would for instance select a negative setting for Sharpness or Contrast??
Cheers,

Hey guys, just saying hi, my first post.

Just bought an E-P2, had to get the kit zoom, wasn't available without...that's OK. I ordered the 50/2 macro and purchased the adaptor.

Just sold Canon 5D, 85/1.2Lii and 35/1.4, best setup I ever had, reason being, I spend a lot of time I'm on my bike (Ducati sport bike, not conducive to extra weight lol), and it was way too heavy. Other reason being, I shot maybe 5,000 images in the time I had it (several years, very long time for me, beautiful setup), and thinking back amongst all the setups I've had, I realized the Contax S2 with 50/1.4 Planar was my most USED setup - I took 1,000 pics in a shoot or more, in a day...and I miss those days (I have boxes of negs with that, probably 20,000 or more)...but can't afford a Leica and want really light weight.

So here's me saying hi, and posting an image with the kit lens, my kitty (lol) to see what it, the kit lens, can do.

I'm going to loose my wallet on cameraquest, I think...and I got the adaptor but I can't wait for the 50/2 to show up.

Any real world photos (people hopefully) of the Leica/Panny 25 lens?

Was gonna get the Panny 20/1.7 but I'd rather have a zoom for landscapes. The Leica would function as a 50, but I occasionally want to go wider, in unknown circumstances. Put it around my neck on the bike, stop when I see something, and shoot a landscape...

edit: I double sharpened this, sorry...once in the Olympus program, then in save-for-web with PS (bicubic sharper) after resizing:

Hi,

I've been using the VF-2 on my EP-2 for a while and find it to work very well for my purposes. My only problem has been that if I shoot an image, and then press play to review it later, the review is on the LCD, not in the EVF. I can press the EVF button to change it to the EVF, but the next time I hit the play button, output is back to the rear LCD.

Is there any way to change this so that it always goes to the EVF? It's a nuisance when I want to check focus and I have to press the EVF button first every time.

Thanks!
