Hi all,

I did some searching but didn't find any specific answers so I thought I would ask. I've purchased some used lenses which are in pretty good shape, but they do appear to be dusty inside. What is the best way to solve this? I had a friend recommend sending them off to be taken apart and cleaned. Is this a viable solution? I don't want to spend a ton of money, however, I'm very leery of opening up a lens myself.

Any and all suggestions/advice are welcome.

Does anyone know if the adapters for these lenses work on all the versions? I inherited 21,35,50, and 135 leica r lenses with an old leicaflex. I see there are 1,2,and 3 cam versions of the lenses and I don't know if that effects the actual mount or just some electronic functions of the camera. This is the oldest leicaflex it seems so I assume these are the oldest 1 cam lenses. None of the adapters mention any difference in the mounts so I'm guessing all is good. At least I hope so since I just ordered one.

El Nikkor 50mm F2.8 + OM telescopic extension tube

Hi all,

I am new to this forum; in fact I just discovered it yesterday! For that matter, I am new to the micro 4/3 system. I have been shooting with Olympus cameras for more than 35 years. I moved to digital about 7 years ago and then bought my first micro 4/3 (Olympus OM-D E-M5) 3 months ago. I’m still getting used to the new camera.

I mainly shoot macro. The thing about macro photography is that one always wants to get closer—to shoot at higher magnification and get a better look at some tiny creature. For the past couple of years I have been using a Zuiko 35mm macro lens which got me to 1:1 magnification, but I often wanted to get closer.

This past winter I bought a El Nikkor 50mm F2.8 enlarger lens off eBay for a whole $20.00. This lens has a reputation as a good sharp macro lens when reversed on a bellows. So using a couple of $2.00 adaptors (also off eBay) I tried mounting the lens (reversed) on a vintage OM telescopic auto extension tube 65-116 on my OM-D EM-5 body. The result was magnification of almost 2:1 with the auto extension tube collapsed, and almost 3:1 with it fully extended. Surprisingly, the working distance is very respectable at 6.5cm (collapsed) and 5.5cm (extended).

The photo below is the best result of my first test of the lens: a weevil drinking from a drop of maple syrup. All-in-all I’m reasonably satisfied. I expected some loss of resolution due to the extension, but it didn’t turn out too bad. The image has higher contrast and more muted colours than what I get when I shoot with my Zuiko 35mm macro. So this set-up definitively doesn’t produce images as nice as the Zuiko, but the price was certainly right; and I was able to photograph a tiny insect taking a drink from a drop of syrup...and that’s pretty cool!

The last photo is of the same weevil taken with the Zuiko 35mm macro lens, for comparison.

Cheers,
EC

Hello,

I'm new here, and so glad I found this forum. :)

I purchased a mystery lens for $7.00 and have not had any luck searching online for information on it. The lens is an Access f=35~135mm Macro. My search results come up with a lot of 35~70 but not so much luck with the 35~135.

Does anyone know anything about this lens? I was pretty happy with a few of the practice shots I took this afternoon but I don't really know what I should be looking for.

Any information and/or feedback is greatly appreciated.

what's the smallest adapter for m43 out there? I was shocked at how unwieldy the M42-m4/3 adapter made my Pentax lenses.

I'm liking the AR adapter though.

Which legacy lenses are generally the most compact when adapted to M4/3?

I'm waiting on an OM-m4/3 adapter for my new OM 135/3.5. It feels so small right now, but I'm afraid the adapter will take away the enchantment...

Jupiter 3 in monochrome

The Jupiter 3 is a m39/ltm/l39 mount copied lens design from CZ's 50mm 1.5 Sonnar. It has a nice soft glow and wonderful bokeh shot wide open at 1.5 (it appears to not be coated, so there is little to no contrast without PP) the aperture ring has no click stops so i have to always check to see what it is if it accidentally gets knocked about. stopping down sharpens the image noticeably and cuts down on glare. it's a lovely lens to use compared to other 1.4 lens I have. this classic design has a signature that is perfect for portraits shooting.

if you like this lens, you can also get a canon version or if (at 4 times the price) and a Carl Zeiss one (also $$$$$). the jupiter 3 is also expensive because of this association, but you can find some under 300$ if you're lucky.

All shot on my EP3 with monochrome filter.

Just got this in the post this morning. First impressions are very positive although as it's a 600mm equivalent I doubt I'll be doing much without a tripod or monopod. Both these shots were on a tripod.
The focus ring turns very easily, almost loosely - is this normal on manual Nikkor lenses?

Native or adapted gllass for my G5?

I haven't had a chance to experiment much with my G5 after purchasing it a few weeks ago. I have an upcoming vacation and I really want to take the G5. I currently own two native lenses (the kit lens 12-42 and a 45 to 150). I purchased the lens mount adapter to mount Nikon lenses on mt m4/3 body.

So far I experimented with only one manual focus lens; the 50mm 1.8 Ais lens (late model without prong; not the "E" version). The one or two pics I took eith it turned out quite sharp.

I don't have the time or resources to order a better native lens at this time, so I am considering taking my old Nikon primes with me. I currently have a 24mm 2.8, 35mm 2.0, 50mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 105mm 2.5.

In auto focus I have several others but I feel they are too large and heavy to pack on this upcoming trip.

Do the adaptive lenses offer better IQ or any other advantage (other than speed and in my case that I own several older lenses

Any suggestions regarding which lenses I should pack in my small bag for this vacation; my old Nikkor primes or my two native lenses? I'm not sure if it helps any, but I'm almost certain I won't be shooting any video.

My M42 to M4/3 adapter just showed up and I'm not excited about any of the M42 lenses I've acquired.

-Tamron 28mm f2.8: Image quality seems pleasing, but the focus ring sticks a little. Aperture ring is a pleasure.
-Sigma 28-80mm f3.5 zoom: control rings feel cheap and cumbersome to use. Seems reasonably sharp and not a lot of glow wide open.
-Panagor 85-205mm f3.8 zoon: with the long flanged adapter, this thing is a monster to handle. But the image quality has potential to be better than my Hexanon 80-200 f4. But the Hexanon is so much easier to handle.

I left the SMC 50/1.8 at my parent's place on the Pentax body because I preferred the Hexanon 50/1.8. I don't regret that.

What other M42 lenses should I consider acquiring?

Hello, I was just wondering if any of you had suggestions of vintage macro zooms. There are a ton of them at my local pawn shops and I'm not sure of the names and such. What I really want to know is if there is any I should specifically look for. I'm really starting to like macro photography and would love to get a new lens for it specifically. (Of course native is out of my price range  )

Lens adapter question: crop factor

I'm a beginner and use my epl1 for family events. About a year ago, I bought an MD-to-m4/3 lens adapter for my old 50mm 1.7 lens.

Do lens adapters affect crop factor? I mean if i theoretically had a 50mm lens with a native m4/3 mount, would I see more of an image compared to using an adapter. I'm a beginner and have little knowledge on the physics of photography.

Thanks!

I am sure this question has been asked a lot and I am really just in need of advice and lots of it. I have very happily been shooting my EP-1 for two years now with just a 17mm 2.8. I recently decided to go completley Micro 4/3 and am selling off my Canon equipment (which is not worth much). I am limiting myself to just the money I am getting from my old equipment to buy my new (and used) Micro 4/3stuff. I mostly like primes but I have had a long zoom that I am selling that has become indespinsable for weddings, events, UFO's, etc.
My question is, for a lens that I will use but not everyday, will I be happy with the performance of the Oly 4/3 40-150 with the adapter or should I spend the extra and go with the 40-150 in the Micro 4/3 mount? The price difference used can be anywhere from $30 to $80. I have heard that the adapter is slow to focus, but slower than my 6 year old DSLR with its Tamron 18-250 3.5-6.3 zoom? I know I am looking at more bulk and weight with the adapted lens, but I am use to that.
Need some opinions, please...

Hi all,

I have a question for those users that have used both the 14-54 MKII and/or 12-50.
I have to decide which one to buy and have many doubts. The IQ of the 14-54MKII I read somewhere is better than the 12-50. Size is not a problem and I wouldn't use it in situations where lighning fast AF is needed. I know that it seems strange but I would use it instead of the standard 14-42 kit lens with the Olympus adapter that I already have.

Can you share your thoughts and experience please?

If this has been covered, please just link me to thread :)

I'm about to head into flea market-ville this wknd and I've had luck before finding older lenses. Wondering what the best (and most expensive) performers are for MFT. I guess I'm hunting for the lesser-known ones as people who are holding Leica and Zeiss tend to know their value. Eg, my friend just grabbed a Konica AR 57 f1.2 for $50!
Tandoori Lens Summit

I just finished a massive three-part article on a major lens comparison I conducted with my friend Robbie. We compared these six lenses on an Olympus MFT body:

Cosina 55mm 1:1.2 MC
SMC Pentax 50mm 1:1.2
SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1:1.2
Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 50mm F2 T* ZK
Pentax SMC-FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited
Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm 1:1.8

The images and results are in Part Three (http://www.theatreofnoise.com/2013/06/tandoori-lens-summit-part-three-images.html), which has links back to the setup and justification.

The results surprised us. Would love to have your comments and observations.

A good weekend (Legacy Lens Xmas in June)

My X is holding my 1/2 frame digital canon camera hostage in the divorce with my golf clubs.

I showed her an picked up a EP3 with the 17mm /2.8. Which is very nice. But you all got me inspired to go legacy.

My dad had a Pentax Super Takumar 50/4 macro and a Super Takumar 200/4 which arrived on friday. (I ordered a oly/m43 and m42/m43 adapters which arrived earlier in the week).

So I thought I would pick up a 50/1.8 locally. nothing in classifieds (craigs). So I hit the pawns. The first 3 had crap. The 4th had this Oly OM-1 for $80. Very clean looking and when he pulled the lens cap there was a 50/1.4. I tried to control my excitement. Checked the lens with a light and a cleaned it. it looked almost unused. I'll take it. Then the gentleman pulled out an oly 28mm/2.8, a oly 35/2.8, a no name macro tele, the manuals and the leather camera case all for the $80. Everything almost unused.

Karma. The X will not get me down. So what do I have.

my kit 17mm /2.8 m43

For Legacy it is Full frame (2x)

so my
28mm is a 56mm
35mm is a 70mm
50mm is a 100mm
200mm is a 400mm

Macro 50mm is a 100mm.

Looking forward to taking some great shots.

"Strange" M42 mount question...

Hello. I am hoping you can help me. I have been experimenting with adapted manual lenses. I just bought a Sigma XQ 28mm f2.8. It was sold with an M42 mount advertised. However, when it arrives there are some irregularities with the mount when compared to my Helios and Hanimex lenses. I posted photos showing the difference.

1. Is this a M42? It does screw down to a certain point, but the square "pin" and blade (flange? - see the photos), means it will not screw down enough to actually depress the infinity-focus pin. I noticed this on another M42 on sale at ebay by the way, so any background information would be helpful to me and appreciated!

2. If not what is it?

The lens is in *MINT* shape, so I am loathe to give up on it. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

I'm using an FT Oly 50-200 with the MMF-3 on the Oly OM-D. This is the Mk 1 version of the lens FWIW. The focus time is not the issue it is simply that the photos are out of focus.

I am using single-AF with the AFL on half shutter. The focus says it is locked but a lot of the time (more than 80% of my shots) the focus is either a bit or a lot out. When the shots are in focus, they are stunning.

I am hand holding and I wonder if I simply need to use a tripod to achieve a better success rate? When it works the combo of this lens and body are everything I had hoped for.

Suggestions are welcome.

Before I shell out the $900 for the Oly 75 I thought it would be better to experiment with a non-native lens of that focal length. Anything out there with that focal length and aperture that would generate the same quality portrait shots (manual of course)? And, a $900 manual lens wouldn't really work either I guess :) Thanks!

Goyo 0.95 C-mount lens image circle

I've been looking for a good and inexpensive 25mm lens to use as a daily-driver on my E-P2. All of my current lenses are for the M42 mount. My 25mm lenses are a Vivitar pyramid, which is too large for putting my camera in a cargo pocket, and a Soligor which is hazy. I've looked into native options, and am now looking at c-mount lenses.

According to this fancy-pants spreadsheet (https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p9kkgjwEQQQ-HJwvNDobeEw) a 21mm image circle would be necessary to cover a 4/3 sensor. If I'm understanding this right, it makes sense, as that is, by definition, what 4/3 means.

It has been discussed that the infamous Noktor lenses are Goyo 0.95 lenses with fancy mounts. According to Goyo's spec sheet (http://www.goyooptical.com/products/industrial/GMV42595MC.pdf), their 0.95 lens has a 1" image circle which would make it a 17mm diameter according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_mount) and that fancy spreadsheet says it wouldn't work.

So...is Noktor doing anything else fancy to make that work? Are there any other, similar 25mm lenses which would make me happy? It looks like Goyo has some 4/3 lenses, but only go down to f2. That is faster than either of the lenses I currently have, though.

In looking for my first legacy lens (for my E-PL2), and specifically wanting a tele prime, I was recently offered a Minolta 300mm 4.5 IN CM MC tele Rokkor HF (72) lens. Having not even seen it yet, it sounds like it might be freakishly large for my little m4/3rds camera, causing it to be difficult to hold, and too unbalanced for tripod use. Is this true? But if not, just how good of a lens (sharpness and color) is this lens? Any other comments would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

I just picked up a copy of this lens to adapt to EF mount and then intend on using it both with my OM-D and my 5Dc.

I took some snapshots while waiting at the border crossing to get back into Canada this afternoon (the line was horrible). These are the kind of shots normally associated with such a lens, but standard portrait subjects where unavailable on the open road, so this will have to do. The lens is biting sharp stopped down and unexpectedly sharp at f/1.2--nowhere near as soft as I expected.

So I've gone and gotten my FD adapter stuck on my 50mm 1.4. The silver tightening ring partially loosens but then gets stuck. Also the aperture ring is stuck between 1.4 and 2.8. I was attempting to get the aperture blades un-stuck as they were stuck in the open position, but I think I touched something I shouldn't have. I confess I don't know much about how these lenses work or why it might be stuck. Any suggestions? I can throw a pic of the inside up if that might help. Thanks!

Cheers,

I picked up this beast of a lens assembly on Monday, at a flea market.

It looks like the front end of an old broadcast TV camera. Canon brand, but BVP-350 only yields Sony results. I wonder if, stripped of all the electronics and motors surrounding the lens, I could adapt it?

Here is the mount end of the lens:

As is, the thing probably weighs as much as three E-PL1's!

I think the spectacular weather we had (Philly area anyway) brought out all of the yard sales and garage sales. Cruising around for vintage photographs (glass, tintype, daguerreotypes, offset) I found a Pentax SF1 kit for just twenty dollars. I bought it to see if I could harvest a lens or two, and sell the rest. I welcome any opinions as to the value of my newly acquired "treasures."

B4->m4/3 alternatives?

Hello there. I recently purchased a Fujinon 7.3mm-102mm f1.9 TV lens and am certain it is in B4 mount. I got it for a steal! $8. However, all B4->m4/3 adaptors seem to be in the rang of $120-$300. So, I was wondering if any of you had less expensive alternatives to these rather pricey adaptors. Thanks for your consideration!

M43 Adapters for the BMCC

How reliable are adapters according to their specifications? I'm currently on back-order for a camera at the moment and I'm trying to be as productive as I can in the interim by researching and wish-listing glass I'd like to purchase.

That said, I know Olympus and Panasonic have the lion's share of readily available m43 lenses - but what about if I'm looking to fetch up Nikkors or Canon lenses?

Granted, all of I'm aiming for all things manual but since all of these will need adapters for an M43 body, I'm a little indecisive because of the reliability issues I've read about regarding adapters in general.

Is there any sure-fire way to make sure that an adapter I order will even work properly on the BMCC before I have the camera in my hands or would it be best to just sit on it until I actually get a chance to tinker around with the thing? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Olympus 150mm F2 on a OMD?

I`ve searched and read a little on this combo, but I`m not sure that the focus speed is very useable especially since fast AF is needed on what is a 300mm equivalent. Any views on this. Given the price of this lens compared to the Canon and Nikon equivalents, it almost seems like a E5 body might be a good buy to run this combo? Any views versus the Canon/Nikon output? Is either Oly combo easily handheld for walk around shooting?
