I bought this lens recently. I just noticed that in manual focus mode no matter which way I turn the focus ring, the focus moves in the same direction. I think the lens is defective, but I just wanted to check whether there was any camera/firmware issue which would cause this. I am using the lens with EPL1.

Thanks

Using ND filters on primes

Hi All,

Trying to learn - I have an OMD and the following native primes ( 25,45,60,75) which I really like. When using the 75 in bright sunlight I tend to max out or get very close to 4000 shutter speed - when using a variable ND filter will the camera automatically compensate to how much I vary the filter?

If I put a 10 stop presumably I can get long exposures....?

sorry novice with ND but I think I need them on these primes allowing shallow DOF in bright sunlight. - thanks for your help

Hi all.. Sorry to start another lens suggestion thread. But I am really confused and would like your opinion.

Planning to visit SFO, Lake Tahoe & Muir Woods later this month and possibly NY city later.

Option 1 :
Panasonic 7-14

Option 2 :
Panasonic 14 and Samyang/Rokinon 7.5 fish eye (or just 14 is enough? , I like the 7.5 fish defished shots a lot)

Not interested in Oly 9-18

Current kit
E-M5
Pana 20
Oly 45
Oly 75

Thanks for checking and like to hear from you

So I was going to take some sample shoots for the first time with my Oly45mm and maybe do a little unbox and demo video when a beaver decided to join me and the dog.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBGcCSNTcPo

A funny side note was that another dude was there trying to take stills of the beaver. He stood on the other side of the river with his HUGE Canon L lens and was probably weeping because the beaver choose the side I was standing on :)

Long story short, I got a G5 on Amazon last week during lightning which I'm now returning because it irks me for only one reason. Setting AF point is 2 steps and not really intuitive without the LCD and with the lcd on my nose keeps hitting it. Otherwise it's a great camera Fast to Focus and superb IQ

I have been out of M4/3 for a while since the E-P2 and gave up on it due to shadow noise in high ISO which is so much better now. Have an OM-D & 17mm 1.8 coming tomorrow so can't wait to get to it...

These are first couple of shots with both lenses... Just got the 25mm yesterday and WOW.. Fast to focus and the build is amazing.

Hey,

I know, another "is that lens right for me thread". :-)

But there is a specific question some of you might know an answer to. So here it goes: In August I am lucky enough to go on a RV and hiking trip through Alaska. Of course I am going to bring my camera with me for some nice landscape and wildlife pictures. The question is, would the 75 (which I do not have right now) be ok for wildlife shots? Of course, a longer lens would be even preferable but the 75 is the longest native lens (while still having a wide aperture) as one can get right now.

I do have the 75-300 but am afraid that quite often it will be to dark for the lens. That's why I am leaning towards the 75. The plan would be to sap pictures and crop in post.

As for the significant price of the lens: I would of course use the lens later on for other opportunities but those would probably not justify the investment.

So, any thoughts on the 75 for wildlife (e.g., moos, grizzlies, ...) as well as the occasional landscape and portrait shot (mind you, I also have the 60mm).

i don't have very steady hands. since i've been using panasonics or a NEX up until a few days ago, i've been shooting with stabilized lenses or tripods at below 1/100 or sometimes even 1/150.

i've been using my new E-PM2 with the kit lens, and last night i tried it with some legacy lenses. my success rate with the heavier legacy lenses wasn't high even with IBIS (canon FD 50 f/1.4 and canon FD 35 f/2), and i had to REALLY work to get the few that came out. i had better success with the lighter c mount lenses, but still underwhelming as around 60% came out sharp.

i was interested in the oly 40-150 lens, not just because of its price but because of its lightness and the fact that i often read oly cameras focus a little faster and correct for oly lenses. my concern is that the IBIS may not be strong enough to counteract my shaky hands. thoughts?

then there are 2 panasonic lenses i'm also considering - the 45-150 and the 45-175, which seems pretty neat overall. i'm wondering how bad the lack of in-camera correction is with these lenses. anyone use either of them on an oly who doesn't do much processing?

I was concerned only with how well this lens will replace the equivalent lens on my FF D700 and I know that, for me, a lot of the quality of a final image depends on my shooting to fit the circumstance.

Sooooo rather than testing my familiarity with the lens and camera, to try and get a 'good' picture, I just decided to try out the lens in the kind of environment where I would use it. I went to a local small town and shot an unknown passerby in a mixed light environment.

Image: http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l61/llorton/aaaotherpersons/P5150027.jpg~original

These are all clips at 100% with default LR processing taken about 2:28 today with Oly OMD f 3.2 1/1000 focal length 100 mm VR on

I am honestly pretty amazed at how well the OMD handles highlights. My preference is for a little more warmth and saturation in the colors but that can be handled in PP.

note that the hair is very sharp and the colors look nice and clean and pretty neutral. That patch on her shoulder that looks blown out is recoverable

My conclusion is that this lens is worth the cost (~ 1400) and I can sell the FF equivalent. (Actually I already sold it and this makes me feel OK about the decision.)

They are not very excited about it but does appear to be improved over the old model. Also they say they couldn't test it above 100mm.

Hello, first post from Swedens newest m4\3 user.
I just switched from Canon 600d to a GH3 and have started buying my first m4/3 lenses. Im planing on getting one of the 2.8 zooms and a bunch of primes. The focal length I use in 95% of the cases is a 50mm equivalent, therefore I thought I woud buy a really nice one.

So I went for a Voigtländer and Im totaly loving it.
Here is the first takes I did, they arent great but it was allso the first time I used a Panasonic and wasnt really knowing what I was doing.

So i want to buy PL20/1.7. Croatian store has it at around 400€ ($520), and i'm not paying that much. No way.

Adorama and BH have it at $370 but the shipping is attrocious (over $70). That's without freight and customs.
Ebay has it cheaper, but if you take away first couple (due to possible scams) it's still over $420.

So my question is, where do you (europeans) buy your lenses? Online or local shops? Not limited to panny lenses (but the olympus pricing here is rather competitive).

Thx everyone

Micro Four Thirds in Excel Spread Sheet

So I tried to gather all the prices of the lenses with native mounts for Micro Four Thirds that are available in both Europe and US and smash them in Excel Spreadsheet.

The problem was that some lenses are not available in Italy, and even some old ones, so I had to convert them from $ to €. The prices where gathered from www.trovaprezzi.com (which is a database for other sites where you can purchase) with the first 3 lowest prices available and calculated the average of those 3. The lenses that are not available in Italy where converter from the price of B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ipp=100&ci=17912&N=4196380428+4099560916&srtclk=itemspp).

Image: http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/4863/microfourthirdslenses.jpg

The coloring was done for a more helpful comparison between the lenses and for that reason I choosen Weight, Length and Filter Thread as specifications (for performance search for reviews).

Blue: Very Low
Green: Low
Yellow: Medium
Orange: High
Red: Very High

For Weight I made the following categorization:

0-125 gr. = Blue
125-250 gr. = Green
250-500 gr. = Yellow
500-750 gr. = Orange
750-2000 gr. = Red

For Length I made the following categorization:

0-2.5cm = Blue
2.5-5cm = Green
5-7.5cm = Yellow
7.5-10cm = Orange
10-46cm = Red

For Filter Thread I made the following categorization:

No Filter Thread + 22mm + 37mm = Blue
46mm = Green
52mm + 55mm + 58mm = Yellow
62mm + 67mm = Orange
72mm + 95mm + 105mm = Red

For Price I made the following categorization:

0-300 = Blue
300-500 = Green
500-750 = Yellow
750-1000 = Orange
1000-1250 = Red

The color comparison is for and between the Micro Four Thirds lenses and not other systems and may not be to your liking and/or opinion.

The circle means that it does not have a filter thread and the ? means that there are no available information (from B&H Photo Video Digital Cameras, Photography, Camcorders (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/)) and I did not search more of it ... sorry about that.

The T-Mount and the purple at the last column are just a few filters that I'm interested in.

I hope you might find this useful as it is to me (I have made a few of this for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Samsung for study).

Hello,

I currently own the following native lenses in conjunction with my G5.

PL25
PL45
P45-150

I have been really looking into getting something wider than the PL25. The Oly 12-50 is starting to intrigue me with its macro function. I only ever use the PL45 for product photos shot in my simple studio and its fantastic in that regard. I do need the macro capabilities when I am shooting smaller items or I need to highlight any particular area of a product.

It would be swell if the Oly 12-50 could be used for product photos as well as be my wide. Maybe thats asking a bit much, my PL45 always delivers quality images.

Not too much love for the 12-50 here, but some nice images in the sample thread. Anyone have good experience with lens when used in a studio?

As much as I liked the Panny 12-35mm I sold it and will be getting back into primes I just want more speed so first lens should be here this week it's the 17mm F1.8.
So my current lenses are

17MM, f1.8
60mm macro
100-300mm
Leica 400mm-- F6.8 A 43 YEAR OLD LENS

All used on the OM-D

I will not get the 45mm and probably not the 75mm there just not in the focal range I use very often.

Maybe next month the 12mm for fathers day if it goes on sale. What I would like to see is a Olympus 25mm F1.8 in silver you think Oly is planning on such a lens they really don't have anything and if they make it as good as the 75mm is it could be a great lens for them. Anyway panasonic 25mm need some competition.

Oly 45mm on Panasonic G3

I have now sent my Oly 45mm lens back twice for repair. Often the lens "does not come back" from the camera sleep mode - there is either a message that the lens is not attached or simply a black screen. To solve the issue, I have to remove and re-seat the lens. The people at Olympus service say that this should be expected using an Olympus lens on a Panasonic body - of course, the supervisor rep says that he has never encountered this even though it is not "uncommon". Firmware is up to date and I have no trouble with other lenses on this camera and have also had the issue with the same lens on my OMD. I think this is a "lemon" lens and a preposterous explanation. I'll be calling the on-shore service people tomorrow... Has anyone else had an issue like this with this lens?

Hi Guys,

I still have a OOF problem (it's probably me not my equipment) but here goes. I spend most of my time trying to get cute photos of 1 small child. I'm using a GX1 which allows me to focus on her, but most of the time my lens is a 20mm 1.7. Good low light performance for parties, restaurants etc. But with the lack of continuous AF and grain at high ISO I am struggling to keep her in focus.

Would faster the faster AF and possible use of AF-C of the 17mm 1:8 help with this?

See example:

Bokeh/narrow DOF with Sigma 19/2.8

I would like to buy a prime around 20mm. Obvious choices are the 20/1.7, the sigma 19/2.8 and the 25/1.4.

the 25mm is too expensive, so the 20mm (used) is an option (€ 200) and a new Sigma 19/2.8 (€99). To me, I would favour the 19/2.8 because I would save some money for some accessories/software/filters.

Current set-up:
Camera's: OM-D + Pana G1
Lenses: Pana 14-45 + 45/1.8 + Vivitar (Komine) Close Focus 28/2.8 + Pentax SMC 50/1.7 + Takumar 55/2

Size is not the most important reason for having the preference on the 20/1.7, but the larger aperture is because of the ability to shoot with narrower DOF.

I browsed through the image thread of the 19mm, but couldn't find a lot of shots having a small DOF. I would like to see some examples with narrow DOF with this lens to see if this is possible...

How is the speed of AF with the 19mm in comparison with the 20/1.7 ?

I am interested in buying a used Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 lens. The seller says that the glass is clear and perfect, no scratches, hazing or fungus. The focus works perfectly and zooming is smooth. The only signs of wear are some light scratches around the logo on the bottom of the lens.

How much should the discount be off the price of a new lens? 20%?

Hi,

I am looking for a lens to Australia - mostly landscapes. So far I have 12-50mm, Oly 45 1.8 and Oly 40-150mm.

I am thinking about getting UWA 9-18mm or Samyang 7,5 (which is manual) or most expensive 7-14 - but it is too pricey for me.

What would you choose?

Thanks for any tip!

1) O 12-50mm + PL 25mm (or another lens)
2) O 14-150mm + P 14mm with wide angle converter

Is there any point to bringing primes like the PL 25mm or 45mm? What about the 7.5mm fisheye?

Panasonic Lumix G 12.5mm F12 3D

I recently got the Lumix G 12.5mm F12 3D lens in the marketplace here (thanks pcnyc!). In a past life I worked on stereo cameras for computer animation so I have an interest in 3D work. This lens isn't the best what with the intra-ocular distance being so small, the aperture is fixed at f12 so you need a lot of light, and the minimum focal distance is almost two feet (0.6m). Thankfully in California we have a lot of sun so I'll have plenty of days to try out shots. :2thumbs:

Anyway, onto pictures. Here are a few I snapped to just see how it works. Not too bad, but not nearly as good as two cameras side by side. All were taken on the E-M5 with the Lumix G 12.5mm F12 3D lens in full sunlight.

You'll need red/cyan glasses to view these in 3D. If anyone wants I can post side-by-side versions so you can do the eye focus trick to see them.

Where is the m4/3 equivalent to Fuji's 18-55?

My friend picked up an X-E1 kit a few weeks ago and let me play with it a bit last weekend. I don't really have strong feelings about the camera, but the 18-55/2.8-4.0 kit lens left a very favorable impression - compact, solid, very good sharpness and suprisingly nice bokeh. All that for a lens that cost $400 when bought in a kit.

The question is why doesn't m4/3 have anything similar?

Between Panasonic and Olympus it seems like they ought to be able to manage at least one zoom lens to use as a kit for the higher-end bodies that isn't either slow (f/5.6 on the long end), expensive ($1100), or both.

I realize that a fully equivalent 14-42/2.2-3.1 lens is probably out of the question, but something in the same neighborhood would be nice. Yes there is the adapted Olympus 14-54/2.8-3.5II, but at 2x the size of the Fuji, and without the ability to AF on anything moving faster than a yard snail, it's not exactly a compelling alternative.

Yes there is the adapted Olympus 14-54/2.8-3.5II, but at 2x the size of the Fuji, and without the ability to AF on anything moving faster than a yard snail, it's not exactly a compelling alternative.

Protect Your Lens!

I’m a junkie for m4/3 primes, and like anything valuable protecting them from damage is a consideration one can’t avoid. While mirrorless has moved us toward smaller and lighter gear, protection moves in the opposite direction. Camera bags add bulk, as do other products. Do you add this bulk, or do you risk your lenses by keeping things smaller and lighter?

I have been doing the latter. And one night on the town concluded with me arriving home only to find my Olympus 12 f2 had a tiny ding on the body due to contact with something else. Knowing how much I love this lens (and how much it cost!) my heart was broken.

I thought, why doesn’t someone make a cover to protect these things? Can they be protected without adding bulk? Can the protection be so compact that it is only slightly larger than the lens itself? Can it still permit full manual focus? Can it be made such that it doesn’t interfere with filters or other add ons? Can it be made in a manner that nothing contacts the lens itself, except a small band of plush material?!

I searched for such a product and found nothing, so I decided to solve the problem myself. What follows is what I came up with. Please tell me what you think!

Does anyone know if, by chance, LENS HOOD LH-61B (used on the 4/3 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 Mark I) fits on the M.ZUIKO 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R? (both use 58mm filters).

What is the designation of the dedicated hood, for that lens?

Thanks,
Moshe

Sorry to repeat but......I will be going to the States for the first time in 25 years and I need some advice on which lenses to take. Space and weight are limited but I am visiting Seattle and the wine areas - large vistas. Napa, Oregon, Stags Leap etc etc
I have OMD extras batteries, back up cards, lens wise - Oly 9-18, Pan 25, Oly 12-50, Oly 60, Oly 75, Pan 35-100 - really annoying as I use them all but I suppose 9-18 a must, 25 for low light, 75 for cristal sharp and 35-100 for the zoom - doesn't save me much - might as well take all.......
Tripod - another problem- have gitzo Carbon but space a problem - do people recommend a small gorilla or table top...I like night pics so essential really.
Any advice would be welcome as I think filling my luggage weight allowance with "camera stuff" wold not go down too well...

After my first month of shooting MFT/Mu43 (what IS the preferred term anyway??;) ) I find myself liking the wider angles a lot, for both landscape and on the streets. I shoot in both the light and dark situations.

What would you consider to be THE native lens for street photography on a Panny at the moment?

Is my 12-50mm a bad copy?

Hi All,

After reading this forum for a couple of weeks, I decided to join the community :)
In addition, I just bought an omd em5 with the 12-50mm.

I'm coming from a Nikon D7000 with the Nikkor 16-85mm. This combo is great but I wanted something smaller and lighter when hiking and be able to grab an ultra wide angle lens while remaining quite light, hence the omd solution.

I bought it with the 12-50mm. At first I intended to stick to it for a couple of months, then buy the oly 9-18mm and after the pang 12-35mm. I don't want to switch lens often, so for now I won't consider primes.

I did enjoyed the few shots I made with the omd (though I find that noise at 200ISO is quite high), but I was very disappointed with the sharpness of the 12-50mm. I knew it will not be on par with the Nikkor 16-85mm, but the difference here is quite important.

So I'm seeking your opinion on whether or not you think I may have a bad copy of the 12-50mm.

To illustrate this, I took almost the same shot with the omd and the D7000, during a hike. This is not a scientific test, but more a real life shot. I set-up both camera to their base ISO, with an aperture which allow a good depth of field while avoiding diffraction. The framing change a bit between the shots since I was not carrying a tripod, but the light was enough to avoid blur (though an the OMD the IBIS was on IS-1).

Here below links to download the JPG directly converted in lightroom4 with sharpening and noise reduction disable for both. The same goes for lens correction. I just adjusted the exposure and change the color profile:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/opwjppp3l3yolr5/OMD.jpg

Here below the link for the raw file in DNG:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gqpwjrdrxt7la0v/OMD.dng
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0xmfdfcw2h8onef/D7000.dng

And if you prefer in their respective format:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ggheab70mqxddjm/OMD.orf
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rp74m7pg7z9ofb4/D7000.nef

Any help will be greatly appreciate, since I hesitate to bring this lens to my retailler and ask for a new one.

Note, that my answer might be delayed a bit and I may only be able to answer you tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Many Thanks,

Some last minute help with lens kit before ordering...

Ok so I need some last minute help with ordering a few lenses for my GH3. I have cancelled two lens orders within minutes after placing them as Im completely tripping out over which lens kit to go with. I know I can probably change/adapt as I go along to suit my needs as I see fit but it would be nice to get it right the first time. Im getting back in the photo/video scene after almost a 1.5 year hiatus after selling my entire Canon 5D kit and I just cant seem to decide which route to go.

So its either one or the other pretty much for me right now:

Kit #1: Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 + Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 + Olympus 45mm f/1.8 OR

Kit #2: Olympus 17mm f/1.8 + Olympus 45mm f/1.8

On 35mm format I have shot a 35mm f/1.4 + 85mm f/1.4 two lens combination before and it worked pretty decent but at times I found the 35mm FL to be a little "awkward" but shooting a two lens combination was a lot more "convenient" and "freeing" in the sense that it was simple with just two lenses. You could throw those two lenses on two bodies if you wanted and shoot away. On the other hand I always felt a lot more comfortable with the 50mm focal length on 35mm format over a 35mm lens. It just felt more right to me. But that of course means you have to invest in a wider angle lens to cover that need when you need to shoot WA. The Panny seems like the right fit in terms of performance/$$$. The Oly 17mm f/1.8 of course has the advantage of being faster by a few stops but longer.

My brain is telling me that the 14/25/45 will work better but the 17/45 seems attractive on its own merits. I guess I just need that last push or affirmation from a few people on which way to go even though I know everyone will tell me that it all depends on your needs and style of shooting. For what its worth I want to focus 50% on video and 50% on stills.

You help is appreciated as I need to press buy soon. Thanks!

Lumix 35-100 f/2.8 - lost aperture control, iris stuck at f/22

I have some sad news to share, hopefully this is an isolated case.

After four days of non stop shooting at a street theatre festival (acrobats etc, lots of burst sequences, about 24 hours of camera usage in total, about 3000 actuations), towards the end of day four, I noticed something strange - suddenly my OM-D started behaving like someone had placed a big stopper over it. Lighting conditions were near perfect - cloudy but bright, fantastic colour saturation and contrast. I didn't know what was happening - for some reason in my stupidity I started blaming the body, because things went back to normal after restarting the camera. But they went back to normal for a moment only. I shot what I could at stupidly high ISOs - I did not have my backup E-P2 body with me but I did have the Oly 14-150 which would have done it just fine... It was only when I got home and changed the lens that I noticed it was not the body. The lens is permanently stopped down and now when I power the camera on it makes a cracking noise as the iris tries to open up.

Really disappointing because I missed some of the best performances. Worst thing is that in shutter priority the camera was not aware of the iris not working, so it would measure against f/22 but think it was really f/whatever, and try to set f/another, resulting in the exposures being completely off. I should be able to recover some pictures from raw but a real waste in the end. We all learn from our mistakes I guess, or others' mistakes :) If I were a pilot, my plane would have crashed.

I bought the lens only in March. The lens spec means it should theoretically be an absolute workhorse for event photography. This situation however makes me think it's not made for long, constant work. Had this been a paid assignment and if I didn't have other kit, I'd be dead in the water. OTOH if it had been a paid assignment I would probably have had a second body and a second lens ready to use.

This is the first time I used this lens for anything serious, previously I shot maybe 200 photos with it.

Has anybody got any experiences with Panasonic UK warranty / repairs?

I know when a lens goes wider just a few mm it makes a huge difference but that zooming in isn't as dramatic.

I currently have the 40-150 oly lens still looking at getting the 100-300 pany or the 75-300 oly.

I would really like it if someone would post the same view with the camera at 150mm and then 300mm. I want to see how much closer I am really getting if I purchase the bigger zoom.

Much appreciated.

Wondering which lens to get...

So I currently have my OM-D with the Sigma 19mm and the kit 12-50mm.
I do street photography and more mainly into street portraits.
Debating between the Sigma 30mm and the Olympus 45mm.
It seems the Oly 45mm is the better choice here judging by posts around the forum but I'm still unsure.

Now to throw a curveball (sorry!) the other one that is interesting me is the Rokinon 7.5mm which I think could be used to get some very interesting street photographs...

Thoughts between the 3 judging by my curent setup and interests?

Thanks in advance!

...Buy the lenses.

I see many posts -- on POTN, on DPR, all over -- that ask "should I go with m43 or xxx" or "I want a compact camera. Which system should I choose."

I've been in m43 for going on 4 years now, along with trying many other systems. I think that question was valid a few years ago. Focusing on the bodies. Which camera is fastest. Which has best IQ, etc.

I think now, though, that it's really about the lenses. I don't mean go m43 because it has better lenses, I mean get these lenses, and use an m43 body because that lens works on the body.

For instance, for wildlife and hiking, I really love my P100-300. It's also outstanding for compressing a scene, and really gives you a wonderful, far-away look (not sure how else to express it). It is not the sharpest lens, but to get that tight angle of view with that lens' color and contrast in such a relatively lightweight package, this is the best option on the market today, any where.

Image: http://wt21.smugmug.com/Camera-Compares/P100-300/i-H7M9LGb/0/L/20120703-P7032096-L.jpg

Or for walk-around and pj type work. Street shooting, and general documentary, I love my PL25. I love the way the bokeh, color, contrast, corners, size, af speed and brightness all work together. Maybe the Fuji 35/1.4 or the NEX 35/1.8 work similar, but I love the PL25 on it's own merits.

And talk about small! I love the 9-18 in the summer for vacation shots. Putting the kids in fantastic wide-angle portrait settings, where they are upclose to the camera. But, I don't want to get bogged down with weight. How about the 9-18 and the PL25 on vacation? What a combo.

I've seen other people's great work with the Oly 75 and the O45. For some reason, I prefer my Canon 85/1.8 for portraits, and my 70-210.

So, for portraits, I bought a 6D, so I could use my preferred lenses. The lens choice came first, the body second. But for all of the other items above, I have a PL25, P100-300 and 9-18. It just so happens they don't fit onto my 6D, so I have an m43 body (or two) to use.
