As an offshoot to the thread about whether people want the OMD- EM5 successor to be bigger....

How many people here support the camera by the lens, and how many support the camera by the body mostly?

I'm suspecting the ones who primarily support the camera by the body prefer a bigger body to support/balance the lens. But I've always been taught to support by the lens, especially if the lens is heavy. So for me, a small size body, no matter how disproportionate to the lens, would make no difference to my handling of taking photos. Also, I don't have to worry about stressing the mount in that case. By the way, when I first learned photography, I held it by the body. Over time, I switched.

I've made it no secret that I'm against micro 4/3rds moving towards bigger bodies--but perhaps that's because I'm a "lens supporter" (being near pocketable helps my preference as well).

So just curious.

I have managed to make my lens cleaning brush dirty somehow - whenever I try to brush a lens with it, it leaves an unfortunate film which has to be removed with a lens cleaning cloth. It must, I think, have come about either by my touching the head of the brush when removing it from my pocket or by blowing on it to try to get dust out of it. Either way, is it possible to clean it? If so, how?

I bought this lens recently. I just noticed that in manual focus mode no matter which way I turn the focus ring, the focus moves in the same direction. I think the lens is defective, but I just wanted to check whether there was any camera/firmware issue which would cause this. I am using the lens with EPL1.

I'm an owner of a brand new Olympus EP......wait for it.......3. That's right I just picked up a brand EP-3. I know the EP-5 is the latest and greatest and the EP-3 is yesterdays news. But, I still like the image quialty of my EPL1, but sometimes the controls drive me nuts. So that was the main reason for the upgrade. That and the 1080 video and of course that EP-3 body. I thought the price was such a great deal and i don't see it going much lower over the next couple of years. The EP-5 is to die for and I may own it at some point, but not at $1K.

I'm in a very strange place right now. I've been a Canon fan boy from day one. There has never been a day when I thought about another brand until the last couple of years. I've had serveral Canon bodies and lens over the yeas. When I got into compacts, of course they were Canon's. The Olympus EPL1 changed that for me. I started looking for a smaller system because I didn't always want to carry around 10 or 12 pound of camera gear. It's such a great time with so many compact systems on the market. I've always liked ranger finder type cameras. So that's one reason I like the PEN seris. But now I'm looking at the Fuji X seris. I don't know what it is about the E-X1 every time I see It I hear music. I don't know why because I've never taken a shot with it or for that matter even held one. So will I end up with an Olympus kit or a Fuji kit or both. I may pick up the X10/20 later this year to try out to see if the Fuji is for me. But for now the Canon gear isn't getting much love because of the new EP-3.

This is also the nicest copy of this lens I've ever seen. Great physical shape, glass is beautiful, and the blades move freely. HOWEVER, there is oil on the rear blades. This has no effect for 99% of people who will be using this on mirrorless cameras. Just an FYI.

I was following up on my pre-order E-P5 bundle deal with Adorama Customer Service this afternoon. This bundle comes with the body, a black 17mm 1.8 and the VF-4 viewfinder for $1,449. They stated expected delivery to the store to be the last week of May! I have to admit, I'm excited

Looks like I will be selling off either my current silver 17mm w/ Silver Oly hood or part out the black one since I won't need both lol. I really like this deal, makes the E-P5 body at $720 considering the VF-4 goes for $280.:2thumbs:

Olympus service in Canada is alive and well. Very quick turnaround involving new shutter, gears, other parts, plus a total cleaning, calibration and testing... all for $129.00, out of warranty.

I left it with Trinitek and they registered the file with Oly. Picked it up myself in Mississauga.

Hi,

I'm a new member (and MFT user) from Portugal.

Previously I was a Pentax K7 shooter, but decided to move to MFT for portability, so far I'm greatly impressed with the images delivered by the E-PL5, so far I only went out with the kit lens but already received the prime trio (14/20/45) and I'm also impressed with their indoor performance.

Feel free to add me as a friend on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/barbosas/

My first shots with the kit lens.. more to follow with prime trio. Cheers

Description
There is not really "mint" DP2S, considering the age of it. But this machine I put on sell has really been taken good care of, I bought it from here or another forum(don't remember) early this year, at little over 300$.
Everything works fine with this camera.
The reason of selling it is simple, I have too many silimar things - I have a DP1X and X100 as well. After conidering different usage of these camera, I decided to left this DP2S go first.

Shipping is roughly 15$ to US locations.
I could send photo of it upon request - have not taken it, typing this at office.
I just placed an order for an Ipad 4 with retina display 128 GB, but now I am having buyer's remorse :mad:. I am thinking that I should have bought a lens instead and settled with 32GB Ipad. The whole idea of buying 128 GB was to carry with me as mobile media device which can store more images while travelling . I need some consolation now :doh:

Hey guys I would like to share with you, some of my images of my recent trip to Patagonia. For two and half weeks, we walked, hiked, travelled around this somehow mysterious yet silent region of our planet, or how locals like to call it "The end of the world". We are originally from Chile, but have never been in Patagonia before, also have been living outside of our country for almost 3 years now, and that also gave us, more of a "foreign" perspective while still being "local".

I hope my pictures captured just a tiny bit of the "spirit" that you breath down there. Is simply a different planet. One where there's only pure life, no malls, no mcdonalds, no what some would call "progress", where the people still eat from their garden, share their animals, they have a community, people is welcoming, where there are no thieves, and they respect and care for nature as they do for their families... its definitely quite an experience, and mind opening.

For 4Q Olympus's imaging division made a 'record loss'. In fact it lost more in 4Q than in the previous 3Qs combined. On sales of 19.9bn yen, the imaging division made a pretty staggering loss of 14.3bn yen.

Just some other facts and figures from the results...

Sales of compacts were 57bn yen against a forecast (made this time last year) of 91bn. Sales of compacts have fallen from 120bn Yen over the last 3 years. Olympus is 'substantially reducing' the number of compact camera models it is producing and will cease production of lower priced models. For the current year they expect compact camera sales to fall from 57bn to 40bn yen. ....Sounds vaguely realistic.....

Perhaps more worrying is 'mirrorless'. Olympus achieved sales of 38bn yen well below their forecast of 43bn yen made at the beginning of the year. Given what must have been a very successful OMD launch that's not too impressive.

Olympus expects 'strong growth' in mirrorless 'in conjunction with market trends'. (yeah right!) They are forecasting mirrorless sales to increase from 38bn yen to 50bn yen (ho, ho, ho).

They are also forecasting their gross margin for the imaging business to increase from 33% to 44% (I am not making this up) and SG&A expenses to fall 20% from 56bn yen to 44bn yen. The combined effect of these (massively heroic) assumptions is a forecast to move from losses of 23.3bn yen to breakeven.

The problem Olympus faces is that last year it made a loss equivalent to 20% of sales! And the only way you can get back to breakeven from there is by making hopeless optimistic forecasts for sales, gross margin and your ability to cut expenses.

It is just as likely that things will not get any better this year. Assume 35bn of compact sales, mirrorless sales flat at 40bn, an unchanged margin and SG&A expenses down 15% and Olympus would lose 23bn yen again. If that is the case, then the imaging division will have lost the US$500m equity injection from Sony in less than two years.

And here is the rub for Olympus. It currently has a compact business that last year produced 57bn of sales that will continue to implode until it is closed. It will be left with a mirrorless business that made sales of 38bn yen and is probably capable of producing sales of 50-60bn yen in a few years time. Now if that business was to produce a 10% net margin, the same as Nikon, the imaging division might eventually make 5-6bn yen profit.

And so the question is. How much longer can Olympus continue with a business that is losing 10-20bn+ yen a year when the 'long run' 'potential' for the business is only to produce 5-6bn yen profit?

Trying to learn - I have an OMD and the following native primes ( 25,45,60,75) which I really like. When using the 75 in bright sunlight I tend to max out or get very close to 4000 shutter speed - when using a variable ND filter will the camera automatically compensate to how much I vary the filter?

If I put a 10 stop presumably I can get long exposures....?

sorry novice with ND but I think I need them on these primes allowing shallow DOF in bright sunlight. - thanks for your help

I have a 3x Vivitar tele-extender in OM mount which I am prepared to sacrifice for parts if a repair is relatively easy for my friendly local lens mechanic/techie. I can only see him on Monday. Just wonder if anyone else has had similar problems and what the prognosis is. Thanks in anticipation.

I wonder if this can work. Wide lenses give a large DOF and that I need.
The ED 17mm f/1.8 lens has, however, a too great minimum focus distance and low magnification. With Extension Tubes you can adjust this. There exist extension of rings 10, 16 and 25mm.

My question is whether it is feasible with one of these Extension rings. And if so what is the magnification and the working distance of the (front side) lens to the object. I would like to buy the E-P5 set and have to decide whether I would use the 17mm lens. I know the 60mm macro lens is an alternative but you never obtains this extra large DOF. I am afraid that even the shortest Extension Tube is too big for the 17mm lens.

Has anyone ever tested such a thing?. I now use something similar with my E-PL3 and the Lumix 3D lens and that really works great (adapted with 1mm spacer in the lens). My working distance on the 3D lens is about 150mm from the frontside of the lens to the object. My picture frame on the E-PL3 is less than 120 mm. The DOF is extreme good.
Now I would like something for 2D images.

Can someone help me?
Second, as far as custom function go, I've been able to use them in the PASM modes but it seems that as soon as I switch from one mode to another, the custom function turns off and I have to manually go into the menu again to activate it. Is this normal or is there a way I can keep the custom settings on while switching from one shooting mode to another?

There was another question I had but I seem to have forgotten it for now....
