Was just coming out of Dobbies Garden Centre today when I spotted this butterfly. He was huge!!! I had my e-pl1 and 20mm lumix lens with me but every time I tried to step closer to take a photograph he'd fly that little bit further away so this is the best shot I could manage before he finally flew out of my reach. I don't know if he's a common butterfly in Edinburgh. I've never seen one like it before. There is a butterfly farm across the road and I wondered if I had come across him as he was making his bid for freedom!

Thanks for looking. Comments and criticisms most welcome.

Cheers, Briar

Lovely black! I know how tricky it is to capture butterflies. I think this might be a White Admiral but not absolutely sure.

Got an email from the Butterfly World and they confirmed this little chap was indeed an escapee ... he's been identified as a Male Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) common across Asia but not common in Scotland so lucky I had my e-pl1 in my hand when we had our brief encounter.

"not common in Scotland" would be a slight understatement ... by the way, if you have a google for images of this species Briar, you won't find any better images of an example than yours
